Official PSAT Score Thread

alright…thats all great, congratulations. but can someone tell me what national merit is worth on a college application? i never hear about it other than from my counselors

my friend got a 240 this year, i was extremely impressed. 202 here:/

national merit is like extra credit- it can only help

Not bad. Definitly semifinalist here. I’m extremely ****ed at my math though: a 65 because of ■■■■■■■■ errors.

Why is there all this hype about the PSATs? I understand why SAT I is important, but PSATs? Someone please explain to me why PSATs are a big deal. Do colleges really care whether you are a semifinalist?

If you qualify as a finalist you can get big scholarships. KU for example offers full rides to any Kansas who writes in KU as their first college choice.

no i don’t understand the hype either, except for national merit. but an excellent SAT score means soooooo much more than a good PSAT score. i’m waiting for this thread to die already, but it won’t (maybe it’s cuz people like me keep posting).

who knows…maybe until fall of 2005 when we get the official results back…

i think i have the lowest score in the entire thread. i got a 195 (94th percentile) and everyone here has scores over 200! well, my scores for critical reading, math, and writing were 62, 69, and 64 respectively. i guess i’ll have to work my butt off to match scores with you smart folks. do any of you buy and study those chunky SAT-prep books? maybe it’s time for me to make an investment…

My son got a 197 (95%). He’s a junior and aspires to highly selective schools. He hates standardized tests and isn’t too interested in doing much prep work. I think the breakdown was 68Math, 64 Reading and 65 Writing

I got a 193 on the PSAT… 65 Cr 66 Math 62 Writing…Better than my 178 last year

My child increased from 185 sophomore year to 218 junior year. Just be sure to prep on your own and use the books mentionned. It takes time and commitment but you can do it.

With absolutely no preparation and four hours of sleep the night before:

CR- 670
Math- 620
Writing- 740

Disappointed, but I am hoping to receive considerably higher marks on the SAT I after some practice tests and maybe a review book.

My D received information for SS programs at Harvard and Yale this week and TASP last week…we are pretty confident she beat the Texas cutoff for semi.

Also, someone asked the advantage of being a NMF. In addition to full rides at places like OU, and huge Regents scholarships ($80K) at private schools like Baylor, NMF status does seem to factor into the academic index used by highly selective schools to tier their applicants. It’s not the only factor by far, but I understand it is one credential they consider when determining if an applicant might be top 5% or not. No merit money at those highly selectives, but it can help you with admissions.

i got a 205 in virginia, i know it wont get me a scholarship or anything but will it get me any kind of recognition i can put on a college application (97 percentile, im a junior)

Well I need to correct myself…

What I meant to say is…I understand most highly selective colleges consider achievements like NMF in addition to an applicant’s AI when evaluating them for admission. (I stated NMF is factored INTO the AI…this is incorrect. Ha! Parents make mistakes too!) But I’ve heard from some admissions officers that NMF may mitigate a low rank, wildly scattered ECs or other negatives when determining which candidates are top 5%. And I’ve also read that some highly selectives will not consider a candidate top drawer unless they have some national level achievements and NMF most certainly qualifies as that.

my brother, got in the mid to upper 170’s, like 176 or something like that, it was 93rd percentile verbal, 95th math, and 70th writing, he’s only a freshman, how good/poor is it?

got a 217 in texas. unfortunately they siad I didn’t qualify because ididn’t mark that I was a full time student ( I contend that I did). I’m going t owrite them a small letter this weekend and give it to my councelor. She’ll attach some stuff to validate that I am a full time student

ironic huh? I study my butt off and Iget disqualified over a technicality. or that is antiirony (since studying qould cause my high score?). lol what a loser

A surprising number of posters on this board claim to have received 240. Sure…Less than 1 out of 20,000 test takers got a 240. That’s a few hundred nationwide. Do they all read this lame board? I think not.

Get a life.

just got my psat scores back yesterday. FINALLY. after so much agony. and they had the audacity to call us all into the auditorium first, raise our expectations and put butterflies in our stomachs, only to bore us with a 45-minute long presentation and then…at last…hand out the scores.
For months i’ve been kicking myself for having performed so terribly on the PSAT…or so i thought. 220  very happy now. Pessimism does pay off. Lower your expectations and you’re sure to be satisfied.
A quick question. I’m quite certain I requested college spamming, but i’ve received no mail…My friend kept on bragging about her Harvard spam, and so I found myself checking the mailbox compulsively, feeling stupid and neglected and worthless upon finding nothing but eckerd cupons etc. I may be pathetic, but my score does not confirm that feeling. Do they not love me? i thought CC-caliber scores warranted all kinds of solicitations, overstuffed mailboxes etc…Where on the score report can you see whether you signed up for it?
