*OFFICIAL PSAT THREAD 2014 (US)*

@rbkgeneral Yes, you won’t know until September, but it is HIGHLY unlikely for a state cutoff to jump 5 points in one year. You should be fine.

Anyone know how a 220 in NY might look for NMSF? Any guesses?

@artie1‌ - Pretty good shot. I’m from NY too!

@artie1‌ You have a high chance of getting it, since the cutoff score is 218 (or maybe that was last year’s). Anyway good score btw. What did you score on CR? And can you give me some tips on how to score higher on the CR section please? Thanks.

Sorry Yoohoo- this is his dad. He doesn’t post here. He did say that you have to get used to the passages and questions and how the test creators think.

@artie1‌ Oh sorry for mistaking you with him. Anyway, thanks for the tips. Hope your son gets NMS. Good Luck!

Earlier today I stumbled onto a thread that was doing a very impress set of calculations to estimate (based on past trends and number of students taking the test) what the cutoffs will be this fall. Now I can’t find it but I’ll keep looking.

Also, did you know that the cutoff for commended has been announced? It is 202, apparently.

@crowlady. Please post the link when you find it.

Here is a link to a description of @WRUAustin’s method and few posts below there’s a link to a spreadsheet file you can download if you want to try it with a different state that hasn’t been tried:

There are predictions so far for
TX,CA,DE, NY,FL,MA,NJ, TN, MD
Then I ran out of steam to check all the posts, because I needed MD – hoping for no change as predicted, There may be more. And of course these are estimates based on a regression so those on the bubble like my S can’t count on anything.

I got a 222 in CA, do you guys think I got it? I know, very very borderline, and I will honestly cry if it is 223 again like it was 2 years ago. And looking at the way the sections are curved (-1 in math is 76 just like two years ago) they are pretty similar to two years ago so I am really stressing

For whoever got a high score on the critical reading section, can you help me out? Like how did you get so good at it. I’ve tried so many things, but my score still remains lower than 60… Please help.

@YoohooAddict. I scored a 72. I believe this is mainly due to my love of reading.

@DominicBayer I understand, but is there anything that can be done for a person who gets bored from sat passages? Like how can I bring my score up close to 700?

@YoohooAddict Easiest way, but longest way, is to study at least 500 most-frequented SAT words. You should snipe all but one or two vocab questions, which I’m assuming is upwards of 4 more correct questions for you.

To get good at passages, you literally have to trick yourself into being interested in what you’re reading. Ever read a book when you were sleepy, then after reading a page or two, you ask yourself what the heck you even read? You never want that to happen on the SAT; interestestedness in SAT passages is directly related to how well you answer questions about them.

@Kyuutoryuu How do you get yourself interested in the passages? Like I tell myself that and I try to do it, but then I get bored I guess. Maybe I’m not doing it the right way lol.

@YoohooAddict For practice, in a CR passage, try and summarize each paragraph right after you read it in 2 to 3 words. It forces you to think about what you just read. At first, it might take a while, but hopefully after having summarized many, many paragraphs, you can synthesize in your head the information that you’ve read.

@Kyuutoryuu Would that work also if I used it while reading other books? Like if I read books in that way for a while, will I be able to synthesize information more easily?

@YoohooAddict Yes, it should have the same effect in boosting your reading comprehension.

@Kyuutoryuu Ok thank you for the help.

@YoohooAddict You’re welcome!
