*Official* Stanford REA 2015 Applicants' Discussion Thread

minnie - I wish I could help, but physics kicked my butt.

on an unrelated note, I just went and changed my settings so it would show I’m female because of all the confusion :P

Minnie Shoot

Hmm, I wonder where everybody went. I’m under the impression that this thread was a lot busier yesterday than it is today. On that note, though, wulfran and nerdess’s kitten picture battles were very amusing ;)

ahhh thanks kimathi!! here’s the graph that goes with the problem, but i have different numbers
I’m just not sure how to solve it! If you could explain that’d be amazing

http://phuzion.mirror.waffleimages.com/files/0d/0d9d8aeee9ca1fe0e783e1b48c95a61e89d471b3.jpg</a></p>

A pendulum made of a string and a sphere is able to swing in a vertical plane. The pendulum is released from a position of 58◦ from vertical as shown in the figure below. The string hits a peg located a distance d below the point of suspension and rotates about the peg.
The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .
Find the smallest value of d (highest peg position) in order for the sphere to swing in a full circle centered on the peg. Answer in units of m

@Courtney: Because, tbh, I’m not. XD I’m not ugly, either, but I’m kind of in a nowhere-to-go-but-up mindset atm…

Congrats for falling prey to the new validation system! It must mean you’re a heavy contender in the running to get in, because otherwise they wouldn’t bother. Good luck, and I hope it boosts your chances! (And that some of the rest of us get the same benefit… Do you think it might have already happened without the person being told?)

EDIT: just realized that that sounded like I was talking about myself in an awkward, knavish fashion… I meant for anybody.

I might just be able to participate in this thread’s festivities today since I’m home sick! Ehhh, darn it. Haha. How’re you guys all holding up?

@Courtney… WHOA! That’s crazy. Any particular clue why they contacted that teacher? Was she the one who recommended you? Scary :frowning: Good luck!

Ah I talked to my teacher after school and she told me everything: it was my regional admissions counselor who called her. My application was getting presented to the final committee today by him and he wanted to find out as much about me as possible to present to them. Apparently he REALLY liked me, but unfortunately he isn’t the one who makes the decision. He asked my English teacher about how I handled stress, my extra curriculars, my courseload, etc. And they made the final decision on me this afternoon! Hopefully all went well

And feel better, Sleeet!

^Good luck! I’m sure you got accepted.

That’s a very positive sign Courtney; congrats! :)

Courtney!!! Woohoo for you (that’s me doing a celebratory dance for you) !

I hope You are feeling better Sleeet :0(

Thanks guys! It’s not a for sure in by any means, buy it’s nice to know I made it to the last round. And it’s weird to have some insight into my decision process!

Anyways… How’s school going for y’all! It is getting SO hard to force myself to do all my work… Most of the time I just don’t…

How is school going!?!? I have two tests tomorrow :0( After dinner, it’s study time for me. On a good note, soccer practice starts tomorrow :0)

It IS strange! All this time I’ve been convinced that my application was just sucked into a black hole right after I pressed “Submit”. But, well, whatever it takes to get a decision by the 10th…

courtney i just left the creepiest vid on your wall !!!

Re: “whatever it takes”- did anybody else read the article where the Yale applicant sent in a homemade kayak?

Most of school is pretty easy for me, because I had some bad scheduling issues and ended up with a lighter load than I asked for. But then I got the Teacher Of Death for AP Lit, and that is KILLING me.

i’m at work now and watching Shrek 2 on the little tv we have.

Donkey just got tackled by a bunch of dragon-donkey mutant babies

the first thing I thought of was “I’m going to get rejected from Stanford”

I think I need a hug.

That’s pretty awesome, Courtney. I would take it as a good sign.
It make me a little anxious for myself, though…

EMMA I LOVED MY VIDEO SO MUCH. No one makes me laugh out loud by myself quite like you do… And uh, 3ttubrutt3, why does watching that wonderful movie make you think about getting rejected from Stanford?!

Courtney that’s amazing!!! I’m going to be floored if you don’t get in. I wish they could tell us right after they made their decision… AHHH ELEVEN DAYS!
