There’s no way they have a committee discussion for all 6000 applicants

@jinglebell

I think they’ll release them on the 9th to A) give everyone (and especially everyone’s insane parents) time to brush off the rejection and B) to avoid calls from aforementioned insane parents (because of the weekend).

@StanfordCS, I think it must be taken with a grain of salt. There’s no way all 5800 applications would be presented by their respective regional reps to the committee - it would take too much time. If it is the case, I’m thinking they do a lot of “Applicant X: SAT - 1850, GPA - 3.2, AP - none, objections?” If no one raises objections, they quickly move the application to the appropriate pile, and move along.

More likely, I think they skip the process of reviewing Applicant X’s obviously unqualified application during the committee in favor of having the regional reps look through them all beforehand. I imagine that only those apps that pass the regional rep’s standards, and that the regional rep feels confident arguing for, will be presented to committee.

StanfordCS: Great find! You should call and ask if they’re familiar with College Confidential.

UnsureOnLife: Or the regional officer tells the committee that Applicant X should not be admitted. Then the committee takes a look and sees if it concurs. They probably skim through applications like those, spend more time on strong applications, and the most on borderline apps.

No, they do present ALL applications to the committee. However, your regional counselor will give you a score of 1-5 on academics and a score of 1-5 on personal. When I say personal, I mean how well they liked you. Then, they add those two scores. Then, your regional counselor will give quick highlights of your app like strengths and weaknesses to the committee. Then, your regional counselor will tell the your add score, from above. Then, it’s time for additional counselors to ask your counselor questions about your app. Then, they go to a vote, where majority rules.

This may seem long, but it takes 10 minutes per application.

I went back and read “Admission Matters” and this is what they said.

^ I hope not, because I used my essays to highlight my extracurriculars and their impact on me. I could have revealed a lot more about myself if I didn’t stick to my “academic” essays.

^@StanfordCS That new calms me down a bit because my all supplement essays focused all on me :D

Oh, I called Stanny again and somebody else answered the phone. And again, I asked do ALL apps go to committee? I was told YES.

If you don’t believe me, you can call yourself. But hurry, they close in 2 hours.

Do any of you guys know anyone that applied to REA through Questbridge? One of my friends applied to both Stanford and Yale, and she got her response last Thursday. She got deferred from Stanford and Yale.
Do Questbridge candidates have a huge advantage in the application process?

I believe if you’re matched through Questbridge, you have an insane chance of getting in. Was your friend matched?

Yes, She was.
Insane chance? That kinda explains her deferral. She’s the sort of student that has the perfect GPA(ranked 11/660, 4.0 UW) and test scores(36 ACT), but seriously lacks EC’s, awards, etc(only participates in NHS, SADD, and other small clubs without any leadership). But I’m assuming her essays were really good. And even she was surprised by the decision.

Take that with a grain of salt. I’m just making an educated guess from what I’ve seen/heard/read about Questbridge applicants. Deferred is pretty damn good if you ask me (even with perfect stats) if you don’t have ECs.

I am not crazed, I am actually quite calm

There is NO WAY I would ever call Stanford admissions, unless I don’t get a decision when everyone else does.

They do NOT talk about all 5500 applications. Sorry, but they don’t. They’ve all been read several times and Adcoms have probably made a hierarchy of applicants that they will advocate for. How many? who knows! But there is no way, in my opinion, that someone with low grades and test scores and no ECs is getting as much time as someone who is a serious contender. There must be, however, a SERIOUS “bubble” of qualified kids who would all do great there. I kinda feel sorry for the Adcoms: how do you ultimately decide who is a yes, a maybe and a no?

One day down: 4-10 to go!

Okay, if you want something to read. Check out A is for Admission. It’s written by an adcomm at Darthmouth.

According to my friend who applied early decision to Dartmouth, the admissions office emailed her today to tell her they would be announcing the decision on Friday. At first this gave me more hope but now that I have not received an email or seen anything posted on Stanford’s admissions website, I am worried we won’t find out on the 9th. I know it’s just 6 more days, but I seriously don’t think I can take it!

That 6 days will be 6 more days of hope for everyone that is gonna be rejected. (AKA most of us)

I just called. They said they are in the process of making decisions, and decisions may or may not be released earlier than December 15. So, no new information.

stanfordcs.
using your information, if each app is 10 min, and there are 6000 apps, that means that committee would need to go through 1500 apps a day to meet the friday deadline (if decisions do come out this friday). 1500 apps multiplied by 10 minutes is 15000, divided by 60 minutes, is 250 hours. i doubt the committee has 250-hour days…

i just do not think it’s possible to review all 6000 applicants in four days. i think they have a rough cut of who they want, and a list of borderline applicants.

No need to worry, Stanford Girl. Stanford doesn’t announce the date beforehand, they do so only hours before decisions are released in a press release.

If they come out on the 9th, my reaction will be…
OCCUPY STANFORD WE ARE THE 93% (don’t forget to bring a gas mask)

Oh. I saw that they did announce several days ahead of time that they were releasing decisions early for regular decision last year, but I guess they don’t do that for early action. Thanks kimchee1212! I once again believe they will come out on Friday!
