Official Stanford SCEA 2017 Applicants' Discussion Thread

oh they updated it today…I feel like they just finished decisions

I doubt it’ll be tomorro. Even if stanford has it done, I’m guessing that they’ll just wait until Friday so as to, once again, avoid the calls of angry parents. They gain nothing from releasing tomorro.

I’d rather have it Friday…

I really DON’T understand why anyone would angrily call after receiving a rejection…that kind of just justifies their decision

Harborceal: I LOVE revolution. My friend and I always discuss it Tuesdays and come up with crazy scenarios about everything else. We’ve made bets on what happens too

OHMYGOSH I just saw this but this is great. Yeah, me and Aerygold were talking about something similar. I actually plan to major or minor in anthropology (in addition to a science major) and this stuff is <3 I was watching a documentary the other day about a guy who moved to Kenya and implemented the concept of “ownership” to a primal tribe. The tribe, within a year, had developed aggression, war, etc. due to the possessiveness. The guy’s name is escaping me right now…do you know him? Totally agree with you on the religion thing, too.

25% chance tomorrow
74% chance Friday
1% chance Saturday or later. Saturday isn’t happening, as they wouldn’t lie to all the legacies- have them make fancy dinner plans- then not release the results. In my humble opinion, anyway.

@Holocene - yes important points, and the experimentation I’ve done seems to verify the “certain personalities try” rather than “psychedelics CAUSE a certain change”, but my data is apx. n = 6. Interestingly, I had a major shift in consciousness from cannabis, but psychedelics were more just to explore the shift further and see what others had, etc.

Stanford is definitely way more for me than Harvard, but I do think Harvard is still a cool school and such, despite the bad wrap it sometimes gets for having snobby students, which doesn’t seem to be true.

Stanford students definitely are whacky by mainstream society’s standards… exactly why its perfect… Ahhhh being on here with you guys and seeing the dynamism just makes me want to go oh so much more!

@AeryGold: Haha! Great minds think alike!

estimated that out of all our existence i believe 250 years of peace

and bonoballa refers to my last name…ironic though, i think that is why bonobos are so cool to me…
bon-o stole my nickname and pronounces it wrong- its a long “o” :/

So I’ll take it that I was the only reader of this thread to take the “what matters to you” question in a religious direction? Lol

I have about n=8 that verifies this. Obviously not a conclusive study, though lolol. I’ll run a search on pubmed next time I’m in the lab to see what studies come up.

Yeah, I agree, I don’t think most Harvard students are snobby at all. I just like the chill vibe I got at Stanford. I have the rest of my life to be srs bsns.

Seriously agree. Ahhh.

Err I went the opposite direction. I talked about how time matters to me because we only have so much, so I feel the need to make the most of it. I used a social program I started at a hospital to demonstrate this.

It depends what you consider religious, if you use religion’s definition: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

In an extremely loose and liberal manner, perhaps you could classify my essay on “what matters” as “religious”. I would prefer the more progressive term, “spiritual”, tho.

@tptptb: likely, I took it in a concept based off of one of my favorite books, and one of my favorite plays: the subjectivity of heroism and success, and why do we feel that success or being everyone’s favorite must matter

“the subjectivity of heroism and success, and why do we feel that success or being everyone’s favorite must matter”

oooh that must of been good. Would you PM it to me when results come out, if you’re comfortable with that?

@Holocene if we both get in I’d like to get in contact with you, if you’d like.

GOODNIGHT EVERYONE! Enjoy the wild ride!

@tptptb Hey, I did too! :smiley: I was also concerned that I took the question in a rather obscure direction considering that I’ve realized how…liberal our generation tends to be (don’t get me wrong, I won’t shove my faith in anyone’s face or get all like “shun the nonbelievers, shunnnn”, but…yeah I’ll shut up now xD). Good to know I wasn’t the only one!

@hagin- of course! :)

i talked about frivolous things being important and ended on a comment about how time was the most fleeting resource we possess… but common app ****ed it up and it said “we posse” but since it didnt have a period im hoping stanford thought it was to further the idea that time is limited and that i did it on purpose…lol is that pushing it? anyways, im somewhat religious, but i think that im not religious, just dont mind doing good things… plus Catholicism gets ridiculously fake and old quick…

Well, generally each generation of a society is less religious than the prior, if that’s what you mean by “more liberal.” This has been demonstrated all the way from Ancient Greeks to even the modern day i.e. present day Europe has been civilized much longer than the current American society, so Europe is less religious as a whole than America. America will continue to get less and less religious as our society matures.

Every society will eventually fail. For some reason, new ones tend to be invoked on the basis of a strong religion (this reminds me of Bokonism lolol). Again, this will wean over time. it is to be expected.

Gawd I love anthropology. Can’t wait for cawledge.

Hahhaah deep. I’m sure you’re fine. They’re not going to reject you over two letters.

@yorie: Vietnam ;))

Definitely.
