There is a difficulty score (usually in the 5-7 range for these athletes), and there is an execution score (that’s where the 10 comes into play). Things like steps out of bounds, hops, legs not straight enough, etc. get a deduction from the execution score. A completely missed skill or element might lower the difficulty score though, per commentator remarks I’ve heard. I definitely do not want to be a judge!! I’d give them all a perfect 10 and a giant chocolate medal!

Correct

No, with the exception of vault. But the reality is that each gymnast’s routine in a particular apparatus will usually not change much during a particular competition season, so the judges will know what to expect. Gymnasts generally go into an event with a plan A, B, and C, which they will modify in the fly of necessary. In the case of vault, they post the vault they plan to do, but if they change it in the fly, they are scored on the execution / degree of difficulty as performed.

This is in contrast to diving, where you submit the dives in advance, and you’re scored against that dive. If you do a different dive, the score is 0.0.

Also didn’t the women used to do 2 vaults each when they are competing?

the commentary on some of the events “He is on fire like a lions pants”. lol

Probably because coaches aren’t allowed to beat their competitors into submission anymore?

I was asking myself the same thing! Two bites at the apple is what I remember.

Can we move on?

There’s a lot of fun exciting happy things going on

Definitely!! Like the USA 4x400 WR in the heats?!

Or the fact that the women cruise through 5K qualifying in 15:00 - some weren’t breathing hard. At my best, I’d still have over 2 laps to go!

Move on from discussing transgender athletes please!

There have been previous posts about this topic in the political forum. This is not the thread to re-start the debate.

A number of posts hidden/deleted.

(Off to look up results) I hate having to work 8-5. I only get to see it at lunch and the results on the app on my phone. My phone is too slow at work to watch video. And I go to bed too early to see much at night…

I’m lucky that a lot of the “good stuff” happens when it is lunchtime here.

I didn’t watch- he is not likable to me! What happened?

If you watch a lot of tennis, you know how there’s a sizeable contingent of tennis fans who don’t like Nole’s attitude…especially compared to Roger and Rafa.

From this article:

Concerning Djokovic: “He acknowledged feeling nervy and seemed that way, bothered by things such as the wind or the footing or the chair umpire calling him twice for time violations and then warning him for an audible obscenity. Over and over, Djokovic gestured at his team up in the stands, muttering or even yelling.

But his tennis was on point, other than when he got broken to begin the second set.

I had made the comment that I find Nole “SO unlikeable” when he started yelling at his team on a changeover after being broken. It went on too long (imo) and just seemed so disrespectful of the spirit of the Olympic Games. It also seemed to throw Musetti off and just rubbed me the wrong way.
