Official Summer Olympics 2024 Thread - LIVE SPOILERS!

This infuriates me, and I’m glad that the US isn’t going down without a fight.

I liked the NBC coverage of the Paris Games, and apparently many others did, too!

Thanks for that article

Following the sport of ice skating over the years, this debacle doesn’t surprise me at all.

Doesn’t surprise me either. IMO, in sports where the judging has a subjective component, the athletes need to be awarded equal scores if there is a question like this one.

It is only fair and helps prevent mental anguish and its consequences.

New sports added! I’d be happy to see boxing go away. And my husband was joking that ANW needs to be an Olympic event. Well, it looks like an obstacle course a la ANW will be included in the modern pentathlon.

This man is a very respectful yet honest assessor of “live” performances. He is absolutely certain that Celine Dion’s performance was pre-recorded and pitch corrected prior to the ceremony. He states that OF COURSE it would not be live given the weather and all of the other circumstances. I’m okay with it-all performances of this type are pre-recorded in order to deal with the difficulties that are inherent with performances in front of a huge audience or in a large venue. This video may be too technical for most, but it’s pretty convincing that she did not sing that live. His closing remarks are basically saying that it’s unfortunate that singers are always expected to be perfect, and the human voice most certainly isn’t, even among the best singers in the world. There are also several other videos addressing this performance, that all came to the same conclusion.

Céline Dion sang live during Olympics opening ceremony, unlike Lady Gaga: report | Montreal Gazette.

Click and it’ll take you to the news report. They say Lady Gaga was pre-recorded but Celine sang live even though they advised against it.

Having watched several videos of pretty good sound engineers who have absolutely no doubt about it, I find it pretty impossible to believe that that performance was 100% live. I can believe that she sang to the backing track rather than just lip syncing.

And that’s okay. It was pouring down rain, windy, etc. It would not have been possible to hear her at her best under those circumstances.

Agree to disagree.

I think that’s interesting but some singers don’t need pitch correction. The sound engineer says it hints of pitch correction because it’s hard to do and most singers are incapable of holding pitch.

There’s a video of an America’s (or maybe Britain) Got Talent where more than one judge thought the performance was being lip synched because it was too perfect. So the contestant sang acapella for them–and it was perfect.
And we are talking Celine Dion who wanted this more than anything. Who has been praised for her perfect pitch. Who rehearsed at 2 or 3 am at the Eiffel tower in order to do it.

Interestingly, softball and canoe slalom will be in Oklahoma.

Softball I get. Best stadium in the country. Don’t know anything about canoeing.

Well Oklahoma is closer than the surfing events that had to take place in French Polynesia. At least they can fly to LA to be part of the opening and closing ceremonies.

When they had the 1984 Olympics in LA, the soccer was in Santa Clara. I know when my friends went to the Olympics in Atlanta, they went to the horses in North Carolina, so stuff is often spread out.

Looks like boxing is out of the lineup for LA. Good riddance! Horrible sport.

Unless I’m missing something, there’s been nothing announced that it’s out. It wasn’t included in the initial line up (no surprise), but the IOC has said all along that the final determination will occur early 2025.

Maybe the article I read was overly optimistic. I would love to see it go. So :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

This is beyond adorable! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: A future Olympian?!

I’m with you on that

Olympic adjacent – Volleyball silver medalist Avery Skinner is at the UT volleyball game in Austin watching her little sister Madisen play in an exhibition against UTSA. Friend sent me a pic of her in the crowd. You’ll be seeing Madi, who won a natl championship with Kentucky and then two with UT, in the LA Olympics, I bet.
