Amongst my favorite parts of the Olympics are the human interest stories, particularly when those stories reflect the qualities of good sportsmanship and being a good human. I did not know that the Olympics have a Fair Play Award, but I’m glad that they do, and would love for that award to get more attention.
On Wednesday, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) — along with the International Fair Play Committee — announced that Black has been chosen as the recipient of the Paris 2024 Fair Play Award, which recognizes Olympic athletes who “exemplify sportsmanship, the spirit of fair play and respect for others.”
“I just wanted to go over and comfort her and just remind her that it’s not her gymnastics, it’s who she is as a person … having an off-day or results, they don’t define who you are…”
I think that we can sub out the word “gymnastics” and that it would apply to a lot of people, especially our students who post here. Getting a lower grade or not-as-high-as-desired test result or a waitlist or rejection doesn’t define anyone. What matters is who we are as people.
