@avantpelt: Thank you! I’m going to be sticking to ordinary CS. I come from a Linux background, so game design isn’t too appealing to me. I’m more interested in ordinary desktop applications, as well as web backend stuff.

@baolocdo: Thanks! Don’t hate yourself too much for not applying to UCSC; it’s not exactly one of the best UC’s for computer science from what I understand. My main reason for applying there was that I wanted to move to northern California for a while, so I figured either Berkeley or Santa Cruz would be nice. :)

Wow so many new CS majors popping up! Well I’d like to say that I’m also majoring in CS! :D. GPA is 3.93. Good luck to everyone!!! We’re ALMOST THERE!

I am waiting for berkeley but after geting into ucla i might go there even if i get acepted to berkeley. You guys think UCLA is a better atmosphere if you want to have fun while going to school? Heard the area around berkeley is gross and the people there are rude

^
I live next in the LA area so going up there could be a pain. But i really should. I probrably will go check it out since its the biggest decision i have ever made

^I grew up in LA and NorCal and I love Berkeley. Critically analyze for yourself before making a decision that will have an impact on you for the rest of your life. There are the “dirty” parts of Cal but honestly that’s just part of the character of the entire place. Cal in and outside of the classroom is an extremely vibrant place and will provide you with as many lessons and learning moments as you desire.

i agree with eyethink, don’t base your decisions off of what you’ve heard from others…people will have different opinions about different campuses. just like los angeles, there certainly are dirty parts of berkeley…but this goes with any city. in my opinion the people, as a whole, are certainly not rude…in fact, a lot of them are very-open minded but won’t necessarily have the time to go out of their way and be nice to everyone. berkeley folks are generally chill, and keep it real, which is what i love most about the place. good luck in your decision though, and definitely give berkeley a fair chance by checking the city out - its not too far from one of the greatest cities in the world! =)

^I think that the people who think Berkeleyites are rude are stupid young teens.

Perfect example: After the the Pixies show at The Greek my buddy and I went to Top Dog on Durant and obviously it was packed. The cooks are generally quick witted and EXTREMELY sarcastic. A drunk frat ****** comes in and instead of saying linguisa he pronounces is linguica and proceeds to get clowned on by the cook. The whole joint just laughs at the drunk frat ******.

Now some people would say that was rude. But I say sack up. Berkeley in and out of the classroom is geared for the more mature academic. If you’d rather be a pubescent ass clown, then Cal is probably not the place for you.

No problem, glad to help. I currently go to the University of San Francisco

I don’t know which school is “more fun” but I’ve spent weekends at Cal and there is definitely stuff to do…mostly via fraternities but I’m sure it’s the same thing with UCLA. I’ve been on a game day and there’s a really great feel to the Berkeley. No one I know has regretted going there. My friend told me the other day that if I get in I better not forget everything outside of berkeley…cause everyone he knows becomes so attached/loves to the school.

I currently live in SF and it’s pretty easy to get to Cal when I want…just right over the Bay Bridge…it takes about 40 min on the bart, which is the train/subway that goes under the bay (costs about 7$) but if you have a car it can take half the time, tho there is a bridge toll. If you’re 21 the night life in san fran is amazing/ lots of fun city events like Bay to Breakers, St. Patrick’s day parade, and an annual city-wide pillow fight on Valentine’s Day.
