@grinchmeup

“But if you are a minority expect to feel like a loner Irvine is the cookie cutter society”

It’s like that at any UC for a minority.

It’s still like that for any minority in any society that surrounds a UC.

@grinchmeup No, no, no. That means nothing. They’re populated, but the surrounding area’s are not populated by those type of people. UC San Diego is in La Jolla, there are no minorities in that city.

But I do agree that the degree of isolation is a lot lower in Merced and Riverside, possibly.

Also, I am speaking in terms of African Americans, so excuse me for representing them as the only entity of minority. I still believe other minorities have to deal with this, as well.

I actually went to the freshmen orientation for UCI (family forced me to) and decided not to attend shortly after. Finishing high school, I told by family that I wanted to go to cc instead (the reasons are numerous), but they told me to at least base my decision after I attended the orientation. The only thing that was particularly memorable to me was the breakfast served. I made a few friends when I was checking in, but once we split into our dorm groups, it was kind of difficult. I tried to chat up with some people, but it was pretty clear to me that they were disinterested, maybe being a minority played a part (especially in the group), but I won’t blame it on that. Additionally, I didn’t really like the ambiance of the place.

I agree with @UCLAFFF -

Anyway, the portal isn’t loading for me. Could they be uploading some decisions? Or is my wifi just terrible? For reference, UCI’s website loaded fine for me, but the portal wouldn’t.

@goldencub If you’re at the BCC library, then it’s most definitely the WiFi.

@grinchmeup Bordering Mexico when hardly any of those minorities on the other side of the border are granted access to the country, haha.

Although whites may not be the majority in the surrounding city, the majority of people on UC campuses are white, and if they are not white, they are Asian.

What I am trying to point out, is that no surrounding area is going to have an affect on minorities when they, as students, spend most of their time on campus anyway. So, it doesn’t matter which UC they attend, they will still feel isolated because of the student body that encompasses the campus.

It’s not like they can run across the street and “feel right at home” because there are blacks or latinos are in sight.

@boxandwhiskers One of Cal’s libraries. Underground. It’s probably the wifi.

@goldencub portal loads just fine for me. still no update :frowning:

Contact UCI admissions and ask for advice. boxandwhiskers, its a really awesome campus, check it out on google maps. Being a student there with a bike would be great, the ring road goes by all these amazing visually incredible buildings with that huge park in the center. There is a bridge that goes into a shopping area that’s really nice, plenty of good restaurants. I have pictures of the campus but only in the social sciences area and by the langson library, still though I took in the links below…

@BackNSchool83 very nice photos of the campus! Thanks for sharing :slight_smile:

@grinchmeup

“It’s the border of Mexico. I don’t think they make much of an effort to go to Canada after they cross. San Diego is full of Mexicans.”
I don’t understand what you’re saying here. Do you believe the border patrol drops the integrity of their purpose for the sake of letting people in to an area that is close to their home?

“And some people don’t live on campus but have to go off campus to rent a room or an apartment because UC housing is too expensive. Also students don’t party at school. Students don’t live at school. Students don’t visit family or go out on the weekends, at school.”

UC campuses are meant for full time students, so of course they will spend most of their time on campus. I have spent two years at a UC living in an apartment, and I am pretty sure I was on campus most of the time, along with many of my roommates.

“So I guess it’s ok to disagree. Point that I’m trying to make is not all UCs are going to make people feel isolated. Only ones that have a white and Asian school environment on top of white and Asian city. It’s going to have less if no impact on students who attend more diverse schools like riverside and live in not only a city but an entire county that white is the minority.”

So the purpose of UCR and UCM is to make minorities feel comfortable, while other UC’s simply do not care about these issues? I have to disagree with you here, there are an extensive amount of support services on all UC campuses that reach out to minorities, including both African Americans and Latinos. Those services are put on the CAMPUSES for a reason, because it builds a community that is consistently underrepresented on each and every UC campus.

I am often surprised at the topics of conversation that take root in these threads.

Seriously. Sorry I asked.

@grinchmeup

You’ve tried conveying the message that the UC’s that are surrounded by minorities are places of comfort for minority students, when this is far from the truth. I’m an African American male, and I have friends of my race that attend different UC’s and we all talk about the very similar issues that go on around campus–from discrimination to hate crimes. And it’s all independent of the surrounding area.

I am completely aware that Irvine is a commuter school, but how many of those students that are commuting do you believe are minorities? You said it yourself that this school is surrounded by purely white and asians, so of course it will be a smart option for them to commute when their parents don’t have a problem with their child living with them while attending school. Either way, if a minority were to commute, they’d still be spending a great deal of time on the campus for a minimum of two years, which is more than enough time for them to feel isolated, which is the very thing you said yourself.

@grinchmeup If you had these experiences, then how silly do you appear to enjoy living in a community where, according to you, people are profiled because they don’t appear to fit in? If you’re latino, you aren’t fitting in yourself, yet you praise the city for it’s robust attitude and rich kids who roll around in 200,000 dollar automobiles.

Maybe it’s different for African American minorities, I cannot speak up on latino minorities. Although we are similar, we must still be very different.

@grinchmeup I saw that and corrected it myself, no need to correct me on it. You got the point.

I never denied AA’s not being minorities, I simply said that due to diversity, latinos may experience a sense of comfort that AA’s do not.

We can talk about this in detail in private messages, if you’d like, but I don’t want to deter away from the main topic of this thread, and not maintain this petty argument.

anyways, has anyone heard back from UCI recently (as in today lol)?
Should we expect the 22nd for decisions?

I predict the 20th.
