@grinchmeup Seems like you had some poor experiences living in Irvine if you feel the police really profile folks based on race. You mention that if you don’t fit in you will be targeted by police. I’m a Mexican, and look the part, who lives in Irvine and have never been harassed by police, hell I’ve never even been pulled over by a police officer. While you’re not wrong about the population being heavily White and Asian, it’s still one of the most integrated cities in the country. You’re also right about the city being rather boring, if you’re college aged. It’s a nice city to raise children and have a family in, schools are great and there’s tons for parents and their children to do.
Anyways, I rambled there. Just wanted to make sure any Latinos considering going to UCI are not dissuaded from going there because one person shared anecdotal evidence of being racially profiled by, of course, providing my own anecdotal evidence of the contrary, hah!
I’m a latina who currently lives in La Jolla, walking distance to UCSD, from my experience, and coming from Boyle Heights in Los Angeles (which is quite Mexican), I have not seen many minorities in this area. The majority of the population here is White and Asian. I believe the minorities live inland or south of Mission Bay/Hills, not so much surrounding the campus. My experience on campus, as a minority, has never felt “isolated” or “lonely,” perhaps it is what you make of it. I have lived in Irvine, and yes, I agree it is mostly white and asian, but the only real issue I found was it was mostly boring, then again, I come from a big city like Los Angeles, which may explain why I don’t feel I would be uncomfortable at any campus.
All in all, I believe Irvine is great for people who don’t plan on doing much outside of the campus and who plan on just focusing on their work. Anyway, good luck to you and everyone on here
@UCMtoUCSBHopeful Haven’t heard anything. I still predict Monday - maybe Tuesday - for some more Regents people, and some non-Regents decisions. Have you SIR’d to UCSB yet, or are you waiting to hear back from other schools first?
I grew up in Irvine and I’m white. The cops once “pulled me over” for jaywalking. They basically look for anything to get you for since their job is so boring. Irvine was the safest city in the US for a long time, I’m sure it was the rowdy jaywalkers that bumped it to number 2 or 3…
Oh I take it back! Number one again- they must be doing their job right!
On another note, how do we go about applying for scholarships if we don’t know if we’re accepted? I got one from my cc today from SoCal Edison for stem students. Need many many more of those to get through the next few years!
@goldencub haha hey! Well hopefully Monday or any time next week lol the sooner the better for everyone.
Yes, I SIRd to UCSB already lol. But I still want to know if I made it into UCI
Just wondering, I didn’t have time to look through all the pages because I have some studying to do, anyone know of econ majors being accepted yet? I got into UCSB but that’s the only UC I’ve heard back from so far (UCI, UCLA, UCSD).
@mariaelise I believe only a handful of very qualified students have heard back from UCI or UCSD, the rest of us are still waiting for them to send out the general acceptances/rejections. UCSB started sending out their admissions way earlier, I got mine like on the 22nd of march
So this was from 2015…hurts just looking at it… in CS game design around 130 last year applied, they admitted around 45 and around 28 excepted…hard to feel the odds of my son getting in are on his side…Id like to know out of the 17,000 that applied chise UCI and not opted out…anyone know?
This is a snapshot of the admitted transfer students for fall 2015.
Please be cautious in drawing conclusions from this information. Use it as a general guide to selectivity and not as a predictor of your chance for admission to UC Irvine.
@Blink5 UCI is getting surprisingly competitive for certain programs. Business Admin at UCI is more selective for transfers than UC Berkeley’s Haas, which is rather shocking. It seems that UCI is working very hard to earn a reputation for some of its programs.
@goldencub out of 60 admitted to UCI’s Business Administration only 2 enrolled? Do you think most of the people who got accepted into that program ended up going to better programs? Even though UCI has a lower acceptance rate, I still believe that Berkeley has a greater business program. I applied to both BA programs, but def would take Hass over Paul Merage.
