Just my two cents, you’re going to find individuals who lack knowledge on personal hygiene wherever you go, NOT just UCSC. At Colorado State I’d see people got in PJ’s, robes, you name it. Its college and the nature of it is that many college students roll out of bed 15 minutes before class and go straight there without brushing their teeth or deodorizing first. Its no different here at my CCC either. To believe that it is only UCSC that is like this is a generalized misconception, I promise you. Unfortunately, even though you may have a sensitivity to it (I can’t necessarily blame you), you can’t really control peoples’ lack of hygienic tendencies, so you’re just going to have to deal with it wherever you go.

i know it’s going to be wherever i go, but from the videos i saw of the students on campus it looks like it might be more prevalent here. and that’s my question: is it? to be honest, it’s the only thing holding me back from this campus, and that’s sad.

I don’t know what videos you’ve been watching, but I really haven’t seen (or smelled) anybody like that around UCSC. There are people that don’t look the the best well kept, but nothing that interferes with how I went about my day. YES, there will be people like that, they’re everywhere, but I don’t really think its any more prevalent at UCSC than any other college campus. I would hate for something like that to hold you back from attending UCSC.

Oh, I can still see that deterring students from enrolling to CSUs and instead choosing less selective UCs. Interesting. Thanks for clarifying.

anexia I totally get your worry and concerns. I go to a CC in a somewhat affluent part of the bay area. It has a hippy population of zero point zero zero. With that said I am also taking a weight lifting class and it is VERY apparent that a couple of gentleman either DO NOT shower OR DO NOT wear deodorant. A reason for at least one of these guys is because these reasons along with his out of control weight. So would i expect hippes to smell? yes. Would i expect SOME people to smell where ever I go? I would be a fool if i didn’t. Does UCSC maybe just maybe have a monopoly on people that have BO? hell no

And anexia! I was just at UCSC for sprint spotlight and had to ride the CROWDED a.f. loop bus. Sandwiched and I mean like panini pressed sandwiched between standing students on a city style bus with no air. Never got a whiff or a smell of anything bad. Granted it was a small sample size of the population but you ride any bus long enough someone will be bound to smell. It would be really silly to have perceived hygiene of others weigh in this important life changing decision coming up.

if i could “like” your post, i would. lol… i was set on ucsc before i started getting admission offers in. but then i got accepted to ucsb first, so i started looking into sb heavily and fell in love with it. then i got into ucsc and started looking at videos… i think this was around the same day i just kept smelling BO all over my school… i guess i’m just trying to make myself not feel bad about liking sb better? idk. i’m also worried about all the students at sb being like jeff spicoli. lol i can’t win.

Out of curiosity, do you guys get this message when you try to view your financial aid award for UCSC?

“No financial aid information exists - we have not received your FAFSA or your FAFSA has errors.”

I’m assuming its because I don’t have a decision and awards aren’t out yet, but I wanted to see if you all had the same message too. I just want to make sure they actually received it! Every other school did…

I can now view my financial aid award. Not a bad offer.

Wow. UCSC’s financial aid package is amazing. They are literally covering almost everything, with nearly 27k in gift aid and 7800 in subsidized loans.

^^ Yeah, do you guys know how the school calculates that? The Pell and Cal grant are the same from SC, SB and Riverside, but SC is giving me the most for the UC grant.

@asphyxiac You got 27k from just grants?

@asphyxiac- Does it make you reconsider UCSC? Haha, just kidding. Nice offer!

Man, now I really want to get accepted and receive my offer! That message makes me nervous that I did something wrong. I know its probably because I haven’t been accepted yet, but you know…just concerning.

i have a little over 20 or 22 in grants i think. i haven’t even had my cal grant app processed yet.

^NICE! Whats your EFC? Hopefully I can get something like that! Although, I don’t qualify for the Cal Grant, but I am considered a foster youth. So that has some of its own perks as well.

UCM gave me the largest UC grant. it was ~18,000. but they didn’t include cal grant in my fin aid so when my cal grant app is evaluated then their grant will be lowered, but thats what i’m guessing.

my UCSC fin aid package says i should receive 34 grand in grants and loans. I don’t want to take out loans though :/

sorry that was for ucsb. my efc is 0.

i got 14k in grant and 20k in loan =(.

@ uchappytrain: Same here. I don’t want to take out any loans unless I absolutely have to. The grants are enough for tuition, books and misc. I’m just going to work a job to pay rent and food.

Do you guys think the higher ranked UCs will give less money? So far it seems that way from the financial aid awards that I’ve received. The Pell and Cal grant amounts are the same but UCSC gave me $6049(which is awesome btw), UCR gave me $3110, and UCSB only gave me $2093. And I know that last year my brother only received 18k total including Cal, Pell, B+G, UC grant etc from UCLA. Where as I’m getting $18474 from Cal and Pell combined, and not including whatever the school offers me extra.

@iDizzle
my awards are the same at UCSC and UCSB. my assumption is that all the UC’s will offer me the same amount of aid. Maybe UCR and UCM are slightly higher than the rest? but i did not apply to those schools. guess we will find out pretty soon!
