@ggindian98: Sent you a private pm with answer
@VeryLuckyParent you are a very lucky parent, now with a kid who goes to uchicago!! i hope mine can say that one day; did your son send a continued letter of interest? how long was it, and was it sent by smail mail/email/uchicago account?
@VeryLuckyParent Congratulations! Your son and your family must be thrilled!
@aych1686 Feel very blessed and humbled by the entire process right now. He sent an email. When I read it, I thought it was kind of emotional, but I guess it worked.
@nightbird407 We are in a state of shock, actually. LoL.
I have a q: does anyone know if the spot offered from waitlist may have different regulations from the other spots that can wait until May 1 until a final decision is made. In other words, if offered a spot from waitlist, it would be safer to register right away and pay the registration fee, because they may change their mind and take the spot back???
We were told we have till May 1st, like everybody else. Take the spot back?? Hmm. I hope schools don’t give out and rescind offers flippantly. That would be a tragedy and sully their reputation, would it not?
@VeryLuckyParent would you also mind sending me a pm with your general area? It would be helpful to know. Now that he knows people are getting calls off the waitlist my son is glued to his phone and is concerned about missing a call, should it come, lest they simply move on to the next prospect. I’m thinking it’s going to be a long month!
@CoramDeo7 Oh poor kid! I can’t imagine his angst. Just sent you a pm.
@VeryLuckyParent can you also pm my your general area? Thanks!
Based on those two statements 1,200 EA admits, around 900 RD admits ( so total initial offers of around 2,100). Assuming class size of around 1,500, that would mean UChicago is expecting a yield of close to 70%!! on an admit rate of just over 7%. If true, that would be shocking!!
Congrats to all who got off the list. Sent my email of interest last night…fingers crossed now.
Any other applicants from Mississippi?
Crickets
@VeryLuckyParent can you also pm your general region? i don’t believe anyone from my state has gotten off the waitlist
I’m honestly considering taking myself off the waitlist. Even if I got off it and got accepted, I’m not sure if I’d go. I feel like unless I explicitly state that I’d go if taken off the waitlist, I won’t get in. I’d love to get into UChicago and be able to assess whether it’s a better fit for me than the school I plan on committing to, but I’m not sure if it’s worth trying… Opinions?
@ThatGirlCoder I understand how you feel. We actually were very close to turning down the invite to be placed on the wait list, because my son was kind of bummed out. But after a few days, we decided, “What the heck”. Then after a few more days, he decided to give it one final good push, and here we are!
But my son, really wanted to go to UChicago. If you are not sure, it may be time to move on. There are many wonderful education opportunities in the US and I am sure you will be happy elsewhere.
I think your gut instinct is right. While wanting to matriculate is not the only thing the school will consider, at this stage, it has to be something that factors high on their list. Wait Lists are also yield protecting strategies for schools. If you are not sure that you want to come, then you probably won’t be able to articulate that convincingly enough and they will not be able to see the fire.
If on the other hand you are quite interested, give it one good push like my son did. And then walk away and leave it to fate
@VeryLuckyParent, today at admitted student welcome speech, Dean Nondorf said RD accept rate was 4% (which I interpret as 4.49%).
@ThatGirlCoder, my D was offered waitlist at one of her top choices. She felt she would really need to visit and look at it more before she could commit and with the waitlist, that wasn’t going to happen. So she finally decided to go on the waitlist without committing to attend, and will stay on it until she finishes her accepted student visits. Once she decides on a school, she will remove herself from the waitlist. She realizes this makes acceptance unlikely but she didn’t want to completely cut the possibility off at this point.
All other stats remaining the same, a 4.49% accept rate would make the overall admit rate over 8% and the yield lower than 60% and the optics on that will be bad for the University, so I don’t think they will manage to that. A 4% on the other hand would keep the admit rate below 8% and the yield over 60% which I think the University will shoot for.
My feeling is that when they finally announce, their numbers will look better than last year. They will use the wait list to accomplish that.
Also for class of 2019:
The numbers here
https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/page/profile-class-2019
and the numbers here
http://chicagomaroon.com/2015/04/14/record-low-acceptance-rate-as-applicant-numbers-increase/
don’t seem to match. So not really sure if the former number is a more accurate later revision?
Would you mind to pm me your general area? Thanks so much!
@VeryLuckyParent I was at the reception this morning and he pretty clearly stated 7% overall and 4% for RD. I think he said 32000 total apps.
@notveryzen Ah, thanks for the update. A previous poster had said, that they had attended one of these receptions and the total number of apps was 31,000. Good to know the new numbers. Either way, I think they will report an increase in yield, something over 65%
@veryluckyparent I would be shocked if it’s that high. I think they went from 60 to 60.1 last year. A 5 point jump would be pretty dramatic. Anecdotally, while chatting with a lot of the parents there, seems like a lot of kids in attendance were still deciding and had lots of good options. And it was 35 degrees and raining/sleeting/snowing all day today so that won’t help
