Official University of Chicago 2020 Waitlisted Applicants Thread

@Hoped123 Yep! Just got accepted on Wednesday night, which was a wonderful surprise. My original letter of continued interest was very short and didn’t state any reasons (felt admissions would be short on time and there would be a lot of overlap with my essay), which was worrying when the reply from my regional admissions counsellor seemed to indicate that was the standard. I thought my only shot was taking leave (serving military service obligations now) and showing up at her visit to my school to try to convince her and didn’t expect to be given a chance as early as April.

For international students they seem to send you an email confirming your interest instead of calling (for obvious reasons), and after I replied summarising my reasons, I was offered a place! Since I don’t really fill any particular class roles (athlete, particular instrument etc) I think what helped me were memorable essays and prior clear demonstrated interest, so if that seems like you you still have a shot. There’s also the fact that I’m enrolling in 2017 due to military service, but I’m not really sure how that affected waitlisting (could be good or bad). UChicago is my dream school and I’m beyond overjoyed that I got admitted despite the discouraging statistics.

All the best to those still on the waiting list!

@notveryzen I would be inclined to agree with you on the yield, except that somebody quoted admissions as saying that they expected to take around 80 off the wait list. If that is true then assuming a class size of 1500 gives you a much higher yield. I guess we will just have to wait and see

I am an international student. So, any international got off the waitlist? I mean I have sent a LOI. and I was thinking of persuading my school counselor to write a letter too. Is it to late?

Is the University contacting people according to their region or randomly?

That is an interesting question. Anybody with wait list experience that might able to shed light on this? From what I have been able to gather on this discussion. It looks like they have gone international as well as local, so doesn’t seem to be a noticeable pattern, but my view is very limited

I sent a letter to 3 of my waitlisted colleges, saying that I am interested. I got a reply from Vanderbilt, but the other two schools, Chicago and Washu, seems to have ignored it. Is this normal?

@Bluebrry My son also sent a LOCI to UChicago and didn’t hear anything back so after a couple of weeks, I told him to call the regional admission officer just to make sure that he got it. The regional admission officer said he got it and included it to my son’s file. We are still waiting. A follow up call may be a good idea. It’s good that they take calls.

@VeryLuckyParent Congratulations to you and your family.

@unnamedgal10023 thank you

@unnamedgal10023 Thank you!

Did your son apply EA? and what is his intended major?

Asking for a friend; does this mean all the waitlist calls have been released? Or is it an ongoing process till June?

@Nedcone It’s an ongoing process; a majority of waitlist decisions will be released in the month of May. In accordance with past patterns, your friend can generally expect to hear a decision by the middle of May (although there are some applicants who receive replies afterwards as well).

happy monday everyone…! Hopefully some folks will be notified by the end of this week as well.
i sent in my loci over the weekend (which was probably a bad idea since my email would be one in unread pile saved for monday), but i’m glad its done and over with!

@jpa0115 good luck! It’s better late than never!!

Around 20 folks added to the Facebook page today. They are slowly chugging through the list I think. That pace tells me maybe around 200 will be eventually taken off the list? Pure speculation on my part. Don’t hang your hat on it.

@VeryLuckyParent many people who were accepted RD/EA don’t join the facebook page until late. You cannot make any conclusions off of people being added to it.

^Yes, my son only got around to joining the FB group where he SIRed today, so I don’t think FB is a good indicator.

@HydeSnark @CCMThreeTimes Yeah I know that. I think I mentioned this in one of my older posts. I do think though that as we get closer to May it will become a more accurate predictor

Just for a general update, I received an email back from my regional admissions counselor after sending my LOCI a day before. It read something along the lines of “Thank you for your passionate interest in UChicago… I’ll make sure to put this into your file… Etc.” Has anyone who sent in a LOCI or follow up email received a reply back from their regional counselors yet?
