@blessuphey yes, my son got just about that exact email back from his regional counselor (Bay Area, California) about a day or two after he sent in his LOCI.
Waitlisted! My first choice was Chem, then either Physics or Biological Chemistry. I’ve also applied at Hopkins, but alas, I didn’t make the cut. U Chicago was my reach school, but SDSMT is a nice back up. Fingers crossed.
@blessuphey My son sent LOCI but didn’t receive a reply back. He called after a couple of weeks to check if it was received and was told that it was put into his file.
by locl do you guys mean letter of interest? I sent mine in two days ago and received this as a reply,
"Thank you for your kind email and continued interest in the University of Chicago. We posted a detailed message for our applicants at https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/uncommon-blog/message-our-applicants-1 and I encourage you to read it to learn more about moving forward from here.
We encourage students to visit the schools to which they were admitted and accept a spot at one of those schools by May 1. It is possible we won’t know whether or not we can make offers of admission to waitlisted applicants until early May, and we don’t want anyone to run the risk of not having a seat anywhere next fall.
Overall, since our applicant pool was especially competitive this year, we had to waitlist or deny many highly-qualified applicants and did not have room for everyone we would have liked to take. The size of our waitlist will depend on how many students accept their spots on it. It is also unranked. While accepting your spot on the waitlist indicates to us that you are still interested in UChicago, it is not a binding commitment.
I hope this helps. Thank you once again for your continued interest and let me know if you have any further questions!"
did you guys receive anything similar?
Oh Boy, I don’t want to write this, but I think you deserve a straight answer. I hate to say this and I hope I am wrong, but that response is not good news. Our reply was a lot more personal. So Sorry to have to say that
@3idek3 @VeryLuckyParent I got a reply almost exactly like that with just a few tweaks. I don’t really know anything about this, but I wouldn’t guess that it’s bad news (maybe I’m just saying that because I got that reply too). Isn’t it totally possible that some regional counselors are different from others and respond to emails with a generic response regardless of the student’s chances?
@AvatarRoku I hope you are right. Maybe I am wrong and am reading too much into it
@3idek3 @AvatarRoku Well, then, who are your regional admission counselors? If you guys have the same person, then it’s probably just a personal preference. If not, then it might indicate some generaliziation. And btw, awesome username, @AvatarRoku!
I’ve emailed my regional counselor three times and each time its been pretty personal…he even told me that its not necessary to send in any additional essays or supplements but he would happily read my optional essay since I didn’t send it in my actual application, but again it could just be that we have different regional admission counselors and that some receive more emails then others. @VeryLuckyParent @AvatarRoku @3idek3
@3idek3 @blessuphey The signature in my regional counselor’s email says she is a senior admissions counselor. Not sure if everyone’s regional counselor has this? If not, then maybe that status would make sense to her generic response if she oversees a lot of applicants?
I haven’t heard back yet. Mines a senior admissions counselor too so I’ll definitely share if I get a response. My loci was around two pages - hopefully I didn’t go overboard.
I think it depends to the Regional admission officer and the timing (My son didn’t receive any reply so he called to follow up. @3idek3 that reply you received is the same as what was posted on UChicago’s posting on what to do when you are wait listed. So maybe it was a cut and paste meaning it’s a general response.
I emailed a couple weeks after I sent my letter in. I still haven’t gotten a response :(. I didn’t email my letter though. I sent it through fedex. I did however see an other that was added to my file.
Yeah, I noticed the email didn’t respond to anything I said. Should I respond to it? My loci was really long because I spent a lot of time on it during my spring break so I was really sad to see that response. She even spelled my name wrong in the email… her name was Maura.
Please don’t read too much into that nonsense… Replies I got from my counselors were short and generic. They were definitely not copy&pasted for sure, but they were just general stuff like “keep up the good work” “let me know if anything new happens” etc, and I got accepted fairly early.
Yeah, I really wouldn’t try reading into this too much, as it just might be that different counselors respond differently. My counselor (international admissions counselor) had replied in a couple of hours, and it seemed like a balanced reply, personal, but not too personal, keeping a degree of ambiguity, that always exists in such situations. Thus, there is no guarantee regarding anyone’s admissions decisions via just a reply email, and there would always be exceptions, that both support and negate my argument.
Nevertheless, we are giving our best shot, and keeping up our hopes, so things will work out for the best. UChicago is my dream school, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t succeed in fulfilling my dreams if I don’t get in. But getting in would certainly be amazing, although unlikely,as I have several factors that work against me.
Anyway, best of luck to everyone here, and don’t worry, no one can stop you from succeeding. Remember that and life will be delightful in every turn, and in all the ups and downs.

I sent a second letter today, regarding a couple of updates, and received the same reply as earlier. So this further might prove the fact that counselors just give generic replies, although one can also put forward the argument that I am already in the rejected from any chances of waitlisting pile.
But it would never help me in putting my faith in either of the two arguments, so I guess it’s best to relax and look into other avenues, while still keeping a little amount of hope alive for UChicago.
Anyway, people, do let us know if anyone of you get in. Wishing the best of luck to all the waitlisted candidates, I hope we hear good news soon.
@blazedragon I appreciate how supportive you have remained in all the posts I’ve seen you in. I hope you wind up loving wherever you do wind up. As a parent of a young man about your age I know it is a mark of intellectual and emotional maturity to be able to think beyond one’s self and demonstrate empathy and support for others as well as the healthy outlook you maintain. You will be a blessing to whatever institution is lucky enough to have you among it’s students.
@CoramDeo7 Thank you for your appreciating words!
I am deeply grateful for your wishes, and I hope the best for your son too.
And as for my words, everyone here is like me, yet another student, trying to make his/her mark in the world, so we should all support each other, even if we are the competitors for seats in some of the best universities, like UChicago. I am glad and really humbled by your words, and I would certainly hope to contribute my best to whatever university I end up joining.
Even if my dream of having my college education in the best colleges of the USA isn’t fulfilled as of now, I have faith in myself that I can succeed if I try for a transfer, or apply for postgraduate studies by completing my undergrad years from some college in my own country.
So rather than fretting about it, I think it’s best for me, and everyone else too, to try and focus on making the best of the situation. Best of luck again to your son, and all the other waitlisted candidates! I hope we hear the good news soon, if not sooner.
@3idek3 That’s exactly what I received!
