Official Unofficial Class of '11 Thread

Yes, I absolutely love it!:)

I don’t have to deal with people and I can go at whatever pace that I want. It’s awesome.

Do you ever get lonely?

Not at all!
I still see my friends almost every week and I’m always volunteering on Fridays and weekends. It has definitely alleviated a lot of stress and I can sleep more too, while still taking AP classes. In addition to that, I still communicate with the people at my school, it’s just done online.

^What’s your current class schedule?

whoa, that’s tight! Is it done by webcam or something?

No, we have these discussion forums, kind of like CC, where we are asked a question and we post responses and comments to everyone in our class. We also have these live ellumination lessons where there is a board in the middle of the screen(that we and the teacher can write on) that the teacher uses to present lessons. He/she will be talking on a microphone(that we can use too) and there is this chat box that we type into questions and comments. They are pretty informative and fun:)

My schedule?

Trig/pre-calculus
Spanish 4
APUSH
AP lang
AP Economics
AP Bio

What about you?

You’re lucky, my school doesn’t offer Lang or Econ.

Damn, I had no idea internet schools were so… not sucky lol -.-

What’s homework like and how do they check it?

We don’t really have too much homework. The only classes that refer to the activities that I do as homework are my math and Spanish class. The activities are pretty useful and to the point(there isn’t much busy work). My AP Biology class is just labs, quizes, and tests. We don’t have homework haha
We have a bunch of activities that we do(that aren’t graded) instead. They are useful in that they prepare us for the test, but they aren’t lengthy. They are basically mini activities to check to see if you know what you’re doing. For APUSH I just have little 5 point map activities but that’s it. AP lang consists of a lot of writing, like most AP English classes, but they are useful and interesting assignments(in my opinion). The homework isn’t too bad overall:) We type up the assignments on a word document and attach it to a file to send it in. I could go on for a while but I think you get the idea.

wow, that’s really cool. and do you make online friends and get to know people through the internet?

Semester 1;
Algebra II
Spanish 2
Drama II

Semester 2;
AP Government
AP Literature

Oral/Written Communication- trying to change to Spanish 3

I am starting SAT prep this month for the test in January. I applied for mock trial at my school and will be applying for this scholarship within the next few weeks.

Yes, that’s basically how I become friends with people. We also have monthly counselor meetings, where you and about 10 to 15 other students meet live to talk about the whole college process and get to know one another. People add each other to facebook and talk. All of our live ellumination sessions work the same way. There is no pressure on you to raise your hand or anything. The teacher will talk about some issue or topic and then at the same time you can talk about and comment on the issues with the other people in your class. We also have clubs that meet live too.

O, good luck on the SAT test! I’m thinking about taking it in March.

Dude, that’s tight! One last question: (this is kind of a dumb question) would you say that the kids are kinda odd socially? I mean, are they really aggressive maybe or maybe really shy? Or do they seem just like any other high school kid?

They are just like any high school kid. The online lessons are very informative but they are relaxed. People aren’t pressured into commenting, which I think enables people to be more outgoing. In my AP Biology class we had this discussion regarding how the body develops and everyone was commenting throughout the whole thing. The teachers provide us with guidance regarding an issue, but they leave it up to us to discuss and formulate opinions. For example, my AP Economics class had this lesson on recent laws passed in California. She sent us to this website that had all of the possible acts that could be passed and we guessed and debated over which ones were passed and which ones we would have passed and why. The lessons make us actually think and communicate our own ideas, which enables people to become more outgoing. Everyone is pretty nice to one another too. I actually found out about my current school from someone on CC haha

How do you do AP Bio labs thorugh an online school? Other than that, online school seems pretty cool. Only, I think I’d end up being pretty lonely and miss my school in a way.

So if anyone remembers me talking about the Fantasy Science League thing at my school, I’m tied for first with 9/15 points. So whoever this “Captain Awesome” guy is, he’s so going down. We have codenames so that when teams were picked, we couldn’t pick people based on who they are. We just had to go off of stats. But my team itself is somewhere in the middle. :/

That sounds like fun! Hopefully you win! How do you get points?

We get this box of supplies and we just do all of the labs ourselves at home. We get all of the solutions, aprons, test tubes, etc. through the mail. I would feel the same way, but I hated my school with a passion so this provided me with an alternative solution.

What we do is every day during 4th hour (the second half of the AP Science classes), we take a five point quiz. Monday’s Physics, Tuesday’s Chemistry, Wednesday’s Biology, Thursday Earth/Space, and Friday’s Comissioner’s Choice. And on the first day I got 2 questions right, yesterday I got all 5, and today I got 2 more. It’s pretty intense. There’s like a teacher/parent league and a student league. But the players are the same for each if that makes sense. At the same time, I don’t really want to win becasue the MVP of the whole thing had thier picture in the science hall display case… and I don’t really want that.

That’s cool that they give you all the stuff. I don’t really hate my school, I just hate a lot of people in it.

O, so does everyone participate? That makes it entertaining. Haha about not wanting your picture displayed.

yay class of '11

my junior schedule

enviro ap
calc bc
us history ap
eng 3 honors (we don’t have ap)
spanish 3

I’ll probably apply for Yale EA. I’ve wanted to go there for a while, even though it’s a bit of a pipe dream. I want to major in English, but it’s not really practical in this economy…we’ll see :)

I know what you mean. I love the humanities classes. Unfortunately there aren’t too many job opportunities for them. Maybe you could do a double major? That’s what I’m thinking of doing. You seem to be good at math though:) There is no way I would ever take an AP math class haha
