Official USC 2012 Transfer Thread

General info: Here is a recent entry from the USC Admissions blog with transfer tips:

[Quick Tip for Transfer Applicants Undergraduate Admission Blog](http://admissionblog.usc.edu/2011/12/12/quick-tip-for-transfer-applicants/)

For the majority of applicants they make their decisions based off Fall grades. They do ask to see Spring grades occasionally from some applicants who are borderline. Those applicants are usually wait-listed or accepted for Spring Semester. This is what I was told at a transfer workshop

^ There is no waitlist* (but your answer isn’t wrong - see below!) at USC. By June 1st, all applicants will either

-Be accepted
-Be rejected
or
-Receive a spring grade request (SGR)

Those who get an SGR will hear about acceptance/rejection after submission of their spring grades - some as late as mid-July.

*So the SGRs act as kind of a waitlist in that you are neither accepted nor rejected - you are waiting to hear later. They just don’t call it a waitlist.

Thanks for the correction :)

No!!! It wasn’t a correction, just a clarification (really :slight_smile: ). I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the admissions staff slips up and calls it a waitlist every now and then - it sure LOOKS like a waitlist!

Having watched the boards for a few years now, it seems like more than a few get the SGR - the transfer thread seems at its most active June 1st through the beginning of July as many of you wait to hear the news. The UCs will have their commitment deadline before USC notifies the SGRs, so there are decisions to be made there - many decide to submit a deposit to a UC as they wait rather than risk having no options when they get the news from USC. Housing becomes an issue as it seems that everyone else has their arrangements made and the SGRs can’t even start - but it ALL works out: some of you on this thread will end up as roommates at USC, and somehow everyone finds a place by the time classes start.

Good luck with the applications!

Does anyone have an idea of my chances with a gpa between 3.6-3.65 as a psychology major?

@kagw11
Get started on English asap if possible, according to USC’s website you must complete 2 semesters of English composition before enrolling at USC.

The english class I would have to take at my school is English 301. At any other CC it would be English 102. Should I just wait till the summer and take it then? I feel like it would be better to take it at a CC.

Hey guys I’m planning to transfer to USC next fall as well.

I just had a question about the Letters of Recommendations. Although they are not required, do you guys think it will still be worthwhile to ask professors, deans, and advisors to send one to USC? At my university, I haven’t engaged in conversations with my professors that much. So I’m wondering if sending them would actually be hurting my chances.

Any input would be appreciate it. Good luck to all applicants and please have a safe holiday season. Thanks in advance.

Hm…I’m having trouble with my essays. I’ve written the main Genreal Commmon App one (Why do you wish to transfer?) and have shown it to multiple people, getting their feedback. I’ve now revised it several times and I’m proud of it.

However…The USC School of Theatre essay asks similar questions. Well, at least, my answers are similar to my Common App General Essay

This is the prompt: Autobiographical essay: Please address the following questions in your autobiographical essay: What influenced your decision to major in Theatre? Why are you applying to the USC School of Theatre? What are your expectations from your college education? What are your professional goals and objectives? What extenuating circumstances (if any) may have affected your previous academic performance?

The thing is, I have addressed a lot of these questions in the first essay. It wasn’t my intent, but like…my reason to transfer to IS the School of Theatre and I addressed the goals and objectives to further make my point as to why i wanted to apply.

What should i do? I don’t want my essays to seem repetitive!

@kaikomai

I’m having a trouble with this part too! I don’t wanna spew out a buncha crap that just sounds redundant and although I want mine to sound as authentic as possible, I can’t help but think it sounds soooo cliche…

@kagw11

There’s no point in applying to USC if you don’t take the second series of English. As far as I know, you simply cannot get in if you haven’t completed two semesters of English (or the specific requirement depending on the school) by the end of Spring. That’s honestly they’re only requirement anyway, with the exception of math which can be fulfilled by passing any class higher than Algebra 2 during or after HS

Has anyone turned in their application yet?

Hey, guys

I actually called them to ask about the English requirements and the man on the phone said that it is NOT a requirement. Apparently, they only ask that for mainly community college students because of class credit equivalency issues; but he said that typical four-year colleges/universities are fine if a student didn’t finish them. I can’t even take my English class until my junior year, but since I want to transfer for my sophomore year, it’s totally awesome. It wouldn’t be fair for some students who can apply because their school’s curriculum might be very different. If you also look around on the threads for last year’s USC transfer students, you can see that some students get in without fulfilling the English requirements.

@ DJpsu2015:
well that’s good to know. i finished mine in my freshmen year but only because it was part of my pre-reqs to get into my department. but u don’t know how many people u helped with this information. i know a lot of ppl were freaking out about this. haha How far r u with the application?

Do you guys think it’d be sorta dumb to take a 1 credit aerobics class? Haha I just thought it’d be a fun elective to take. I’m taking it easy and only taking 12 credits next semester.

@BlackRose21

I was totally freaking out about this, so I just finally called to get a straight answer from them. The admissions guys at USC are extremely friendly; one of them even called me back after I left my voice message. It’s a pleasure to help everyone on here. I remember drifting through this site during my undergrad application and it’s unbelievable how helpful this site can be. I’m actually pretty much done with my application. I just have to get my essay re-read one more time by one of my professors and then get his recommendation by feb. 1. I’m so glad I started my essay months in advanced. You?

@hajypajy

I don’t think it’s dumb at all. It will keep you active and it helps your gpa.

@DJpsu2015 haha actually i decided to drop it and take a 3 credit class I found interesting called individual marriage and the family.

i know this is asked a lot but i have a question…

currently, i am planning on transferring as a sophomore but i only have 15 units completed from the fall semester. however, i will have a total of 31 units by spring semester’s end. will i need to include my test scores on the common application when i apply for usc transfer admissions by feb 1st?

^ Haha I had that exact same question and I emailed the transfer counselor of USC and he told me you do not need to include your test scores since you will have at least 30 units completed by the end of your spring semester. Hope that helps!
