nono from USC

shes my regional counselor for UCI from USC

Great. Do you think that they’re going to hold it against me that I personalized my essay to them? I mean why wouldnt they want that and also the people that I know that got in personalized their essays so I’m confused about that

i think youre talking about last year, right? last year usc had their own application but now this year on the common app theyre changing everything.

i honestly have no idea…she just said that they “strongly advise against it.” i dont really think it’ll hurt you though i think she was worried that i was only applying to transfer to one school

maybe she thought i was hurting myself by only wanting to transfer to USC. if it comforts you…these were my exact words:

me: Also, if I’m only planning on applying to USC, can I specify that in the general common application essay?

USC counselor: Applying to only one school is not a good approach. I strongly advise against it. There is no need to include this information on the application as it will have no impact on the decision.

ok i personalized my essay for the why did u want to transfer essay. i know it did say that u shouldn’t but i had the feeling it was if u were applying to more than 1 school. because if u go back to apply to another school u can’t change that essay unless u make a replicate of that application and upload another one/ i mean i don’t know how u could not get personal in that essay. that is one of if not the most important essays for that application because it’s pretty much saying “why do u wanna come from your school to ours” even though they had an essay in the supplement i still felt limited to what u could say. but hopefully they don’t look down on that. :(

Oh I see so you’re saying that she was advising you to apply to more schools just in case sc doesnt work out? Also what did you talk about in your supplement?

Ya I don’t think theyre going to look down on it, I think were fine. What did you guys say in your supplement?

BlackRose- where are you transferring from?

@blackrose

i honestly thought USC would like the fact that we only want to be there, not at some other school but i still dont know how i shouldve taken it. i know shes the one reading my application so i just listened to what she said. if i couldve personalized it, i wouldve talked about the atmosphere at USC and the feeling of being part of a family, etc. i feel like i couldve done a much better job if i couldve mentioned USC in that generic essay

@californiagrl

i think she was saying that but i made it pretty clear through the emails we exchanged that USC was my only choice…i mean i was picking out my schedule for classes that always were transferrable and fulfilled their GEs. in my supplement (i applied to marshall as my first choice and ppd as my second) i talked about the wide range of business classes at sc, their study abroad program with the london school of economics (pretty much one of the only schools in SoCal that has a study abroad program with that school), the possible internships, the connections, and why studying business is important to me and why marshall was perfect for it. i spoke briefly about ppd and i talked about my dad being from a 3rd world country and how ive vsited it and how it effected me and how that made me want to study ppd from an academic level. then, even though it said academic interests, i concluded with the trojan family and how LA is the perfect place to study business

how about you?

essentially the exact same thing as you. classes, internships, trojan family

i really hope its enough!

Did you guys have a “significant” amount of ECs? I guess my question is directed toward those who applied to Annenberg, but anyone can answer. Since I applied to Communication, the only experience I had were: Reporter for school paper, Web designer for Radio website, and Student film organization. I also put down that I was a part of LGBTA since I got involved in that, as well. I hope my “Communication” experiences will suffice…it wasn’t a easy year at Penn State in terms of media coverage this year, especially for freshmen diving into it! Whew, what a year!

Edit: Yeah, I was definitely not a fan of writing the essay, but I’m sort of glad it was more a “straight-forward” type because creative writing is not my niche lol. I was basically just direct to the point: I love my school and my experiences, but I’m ready for further challenge at your school and here’s why XX, XX, XX, which would all help me reach my academic and personal goals (a snippet of my future endeavors and personal goals, though not too personal)…

Of course, it was a lot more detailed, but that’s basically my essay in a nutshell. I was a little hesitant on trying to make it creative because it would’ve have been difficult so I went to my Communication professor and got tips/advice from him. I only had it read by two professors and they said it was “terrific,” so I’m taking their word for it!! I haven’t even looked back at my Common App after I submitted it because I’m afraid of finding some potential errors and psyching myself out. What’s done is done. For my short response, it was sort of like my big essay, but just a bit more in-depth with specific activities and goals I planned to carry out: I talked about joining Vision Voices and improving my people skills and help others by getting in touch with the LGBT and possibly greek life.

anyone have and status updates? just curious… Mine still reads “we’ve received your common app…”

yup i have the same status

We won’t be seeing status changes for a while. Hang tight. It will be a long wait

@MechanicalEngine I applied with a 3.6, with 48 units, but 20 of them when i took CC classes when i was in High School. By the end of this semester i should have ~68

@MechanicalEngine @Ajuan17

I’m glad that i’m not the only one!! I’m applying for CS for next year (meaning next year i will have sophomore status), so currently i’m a freshman. In terms of GPA I got a 4.0 last semester and hoping to do the same this semester. I’ve taken Calc II, a CS Programming Courses, the English Writing Requirement and currently i’m taking Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Physics and Programming in C++. So altogether 28 credits counting this semester

Hopefully, things pan out (keeping my fingers crossed) what majors are you guys applying for?

1st choice major: business
2nd choice: ppd!

@EmperorChintz:
Dang your a freshmen and you’ve done all that lol. I’m also a CS major and am now just finishing that. I’m a sophomore by the way. I think u have a good chance. But I’m also applying to the animation program. What do u like about USC computer science program?
