Official USC 2012 Transfer Thread

SOUNDS AWESOME! Im even more pumped now!

Guys cant get into frat parties unless they join a frat? How does all of that work X/ lol

yes ^ you have to rush a frat to get into parties most of the time. However, if you are close with someone in a frat there is a chance that they can get you onto lists to get into parties. I recommend you rush because the row and nightlife of USC is just nuts. That’s one of the reasons I changed my #1 school from Cal to USC (and the fact that pre-med at cal is just nuts).

^sounds fun but kinda intimidating at the same time. What if no one chooses you? Does that ever happen lol

@ngarcia3

my ex boyfriend is currently a freshman at SC and he rushed…youre pretty much guaranteed a bid from at least one frat so dont worry about that!! and yeah i know girls can get into any frat party, but unless youre close to a pledge in a frat, guys typically cant get in

You’ll get into a frat if you’re not a total NARP (a term that frat members use to call non athletic regular people). They tend to give bids to non-NARPs and pretty boys. You want to get into one of the top 3 frats - sigma chi (IMO the best frat), lambda chi, or phi psi. If you get into one of these three your social life is set. However, I have friends in lower frats such as beta that have a great social life as well. Whatever you do, do not rush for an Asian frat, not only is their social life wack, but their hazing is crazy. A friend of mine had to roll around in rice for three hours on his knees, basically ripping the skin off both of his knees. A week later, after scabs had formed, a member of the frat ripped off the scabs and poured bleach on his skinless knees while he was sleeping, sending him to the hospital. He also had 2 of his front teeth punched out. I would never go through all of this just to hang out with some insane Asian boners. The greek life at USC is top notch. I went to a party two weeks ago that made Project X look like a family gathering.

@Ngarcia3 it’s not that hard to get into a frat, it’s like applying to schools. You can rush for 4 frats during rush week, so I recommend rushing for 2 reach frats (preferably 2 of the top 3 as I mentioned above) and 2 safeties (maybe frats which have actives that you get along with who can help guarantee you a bid). If you have any other questions about the Greek life at USC I’m sure I can answer them for you.

I’ve been on frat row and it looks insane! I think it is one of the few places where all the frats are on one street or pretty much all next-door to each other. IMO it is definitely worth rushing, SC send out this booklet with all of the frats and sororities detailed and listed before welcome week to help you make up your mind and establish which frats you want to rush for. There are certainly frats that are more party-orientated and maybe considered a bit more intimidating for some, but there are also more chill ones too. I think the idea is that on rush week, you walk around from house to house and find one that feels right to you based on the people etc. It is very easy, there is a lot of alcohol around to quash any slight apprehensions you may have!

@bearterritory3

haha, I had no idea Asian frats were so brutal!

Another awesome part about joining a frat is that it makes it very easy to go party at other campuses. There are always contacts/people going to rage for the weekend esp up in UCSB and Cal

@futuretrojansc

Yeah, the sad thing is, this friend only told me some of the stuff he had to go through. There was actually instances of hazing that were WORSE than what I mentioned.

UCSB is sick because you can get into parties without being in a frat. It’s probably the only major school that has parties that are just open to strangers. Can be good or bad depending on who’s the stranger haha.

@bearterritory3

UCSB is awesome, one of my good friends just got accepted a couple of days ago. He was transferring from SMC and is literally made for that college! I will definitely be going up there to visit him! I was up there at the end of last summer and it is very chill.

What course are you applying for at SC?

Thanks for all the info!

Bearterritory3- Is joining a frat really worth it? Im most likely going to rush just to meet some people but dont think I actually plan on pledging. The idea of having to haze and pay yearly to hang out with people is kind of shady. lol and I like to have a balance of everything. Im more of a social drinker and about once a month or so I like to go out to a club and dance. From what I read being in a frat sounds too time consuming and only beneficial too heavy partiers. Also, do you have to live in the same house?

I definitely think it’s worth it. Most frats don’t haze like the Asian one I mentioned, from what my friends say hazing in normal frats consists of doing something embarrassing in front of your brothers rather than painful or strenuous actions. Being in a frat is all about social drinking AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW there are invites around once or twice a month where your frat has each member invite a female to go to a club and dance in a limo or some sort of transportation. Frats understand your study demands and if you tell them you have a midterm, or something to do they usually grant you enough free time. On the subject of living in a frat house, many see it as a way to save money. Being in a frat, just like going to USC is pretty costly. However, if you live in the house (around $6,000 a year, includes a chef and the fees for being in a frat) you can save a boatload of money. Consider the fact that an apartment and a meal plan would cost you around $15,00 a year, not only are you saving money but you also cover your fees to be in the frat. I’m obviously a big supporter of the Greek system at USC, and if it really seems shady to you, you can always rush in the spring after you have a semester of first hand experience of the Greek life, or the GDI life haha.

@FUTURETROJANSC

what course? I applied to be a biological science major, if that’s what your asking.

Being in a frat sounds intriguing but living in the house is a deal breaker. Im the kind of person that likes to go out and have fun and come home to a quiet/calm home. Thats not going to happen living with a bunch of guys. I partied so much the last 5-6 years that I just cant do it as much as the typical college male(probably experiencing it for the first time). If i was a Freshman I most likely would’ve joined in a heartbeat. Hopefully, if I get into USC I can still meet a lot of people and get on some of those guest lists because the parties sound pretty crazy. You better get me in bearterriotry3! haha just kidding (well kind of just kidding lol)

I respect that point. The noise/commotion can be excessive. Being in a frat is lot like a fake ID, reliable but not necessary if you know the right people. I’m going to a huge Sigma Chi event on the 30th, I’m stoked.

@bearterritory3

Oh right sorry, you’ll have to forgive my Britishness! I’m applying for PoliSci as an international transfer from the UK. I’m definitely into the whole idea of frats as we don’t have the same thing at all. The closest thing we have are socials within the rugby team where there are initiation ceremonies and regular socials with other societies… one of the many reasons why I wish to transfer to SC!

Does anyone know anything about the ppd undergrad major? I’ve applied and I’ve reading around that it’s an easy major? But they seem to require alot of units according to the online catalog! Any inputs about the school would be greatly appreciated!

@FUTURETROJANSC: That’s really interesting that you’re from England! What’s making you want to transfer to USC?

Hi ilovescience - did you receive interview notice?

@moquacko

i applied for ppd too! but its my second choice major. i think the undergrad program for ppd is pretty new so admission stats on it dont really exist, or at least i couldnt find any. where did you read that it was an easy major?
