Random thought: I think it’s really rude when people get rejected and then begin to criticize the school and everyone who wants to go there.

@scahopeful

Interesting… so if our applications are under review it will say so in the app status tab? I did not know that… what a relief!
I had unknown unknown for my class & major when that glitch was out but I guess I shouldn’t worry because my app wasn’t under review yet

Yes, it should. Although I saw someone email their counselor asking if their app was under review (because it didn’t say so on USC connect) and the counselor said yes they just needed to update it in the system. And I don’t think unk/unk meant anything for transfers.

As far as ‘tea leaves’ goes for transfers, last year people saw their audit report in oasis which was an indicator of an acceptance.

Just curious - Not everyone will be getting SGRs, right? Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe there will be some students who they will accept without a SGR.

@scahopeful - I know exactly what you’re talking about.

My brother was accepted to UCLA as a freshman and so I asked a question regarding Financial Aid. Even though my brother’s EFC is 5231, we are being asked to pay 36,000. So, the original point of my post was to know whether this was normal for OOS students. The discussion was proceeding normally, except I was able to feel that they were trying to support UCLA even though I was not trying to bash the school in any way.

In one post, I said: “It’s not like UCLA is the top of my brother’s dream school list, but it’s kind of sad to hear that there are OOS students who won’t attend such a nice school because of a lack of aid”.

One lady started to fire back by calling me ungrateful, and one guy called me ungrateful. The lady was pissed because her son was wait-listed and his friends were rejected, while my brother was accepted.

It got pretty bad, and I felt like I was being ganged upon by these immature posters. Here’s a link to the thread in case you’re interested: <a href=“Financial Aid Situation - University of California - Los Angeles - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/1629339-financial-aid-situation-p1.html

What is the transfer acceptance rate at USC?

Does anyone have any statistics?

@Posterguy last year it was about 30% and average GPA is a 3.7.
http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/transfer/prospective/transferprofile.html

That is incredibly high.

Do they give preference to Community College transfers?

I am sure the transfer rate from 4 year colleges is much lower…

@esai23 You are wrong and those people are right. BTW if we are lucky, USC will gap our tuition to the level of UCLA in-state.
@Posterguy 58% of transfers are from CCC. It’s unknown whether that is because more CCC apply or because they prioritize CCC students.

So my S got the “special group” letter today to meet with staff in June and get set on a transfer track in 2-3 semesters…does anyone know how many students received this or have been given this opp in the past? The letter said 51,000 applied and 2,650 Freshman were accepted of the 9,000 total students. So to me that leaves 6,400 that were transfers at various grades!

@ckinder there are transfer threads from previous years with people trying to transfer under the TTP however, there are no stats on that sort of thing

Well @esai23 I can see why they seemed upset. However, they were even more upset about your comment than I was about what another student said about USC (and he/she basically said that USC was like a safety school for them and they had no real rhyme or reason for applying). It’s like how are you going to say that but then turn around and be upset about your rejection all in the same breath? Plus, there are plenty of students who would kill to go to USC and it’s very disrespectful to them to speak about the university so negatively.

I don’t know, I guess I’m just saying that maybe try to see it from their perspective (even though I personally didn’t think that what you said was ‘rude’, just expressing an opinion)

@scahopeful The person/people you are describing sound like they are hurt about the decision, but are handling it in a sore loser type of way. You know, it’s like if you did better on a test than someone else, and they say “Oh, that test wasn’t even that hard. If I would have actually tried, I would have done so much better.” They are afraid of showing what they think to be weakness because of they fear having a sense of inferiority, so they cover it up. You’re absolutely right, it’s wrong of them to speak in this manner when they don’t get what they want, but that’s just how some people are in this world. If they don’t get what they want, they try and ruin it for everyone else.

I don’t want to sound condescending as I say this, but I have seen this attitude far too often. I wish that they could handle it with much more class and maturity at this stage in their life, but I can understand them being hurt about something they probably put a lot of work into.

I completely agree @trojanfan131. And a part of me wanted to just not address it but I was intending to help them overcome that attitude. Well I also had an ulterior motive of expressing how it makes us (who really want to be there) feel when they post such things.

I can understand why they would feel that way I just wanted to encourage them to not internalize it OR project it onto others by being negative/rude about it.

@ckinder - You may have misread. Each class is not 9,000, that is the total number of freshmen applicants accepted of the over 51,000 that applied.

You are leaving out an important admission concept called “yield.” 9000 freshmen applicants (of over 51,000) are accepted to build a freshman class of approximately 2,700-2,900. Of the 9000 accepted, many will choose to attend another school to which they were accepted (applicants these days are applying to 9 - 20 schools…). Over the last several years USC has had an approximate 30% yield - that is, of those applicants offered admission, 30% will accept the offer and attend. The other 70% choose to attend elsewhere. (9,000 X 30% = 2,700).

The USC undergraduate student body is approximately 18,000. Students accepted as freshmen account for about 11,000 - 12,000 of those (2,900 X 4 = 11,600). I have seen unofficial reports that approximately 1,800 transfers enroll each year (so probably 4,000 - 5,000 are accepted) accounting for the rest of the undergraduate student body. I hope this helps clarify.

Sorry if I freightened everyone with that missing admission post.

In my admission status box when I click it I now get this: Click here to submit mid-year grades online.
Its an actual clickable link that appears between the “We will be reviewing applications through the month of May, and we expect to be able to meet our commitment to notify transfers by June 1st.” and the “current message” box.

Does anybody see this as well? I hope this does not mean I am getting SGR’d or Worse :S.

@fdominguez I think that’s just something that appears on everyone’s connect. I have it as well

Hey everyone great discussions going on!

I was wondering what you all are doing regarding your living situations?

I’m coming from the east coast and have only been to CA once so I have no friends to really make plans with regarding apartments in LA.

As a junior, I’m unsure if it’s normal to live on campus with a random dormmate, try and find a random person to share an apartment with, try and find a semi cheap studio apt., or what.

Maybe we could even find other CCers to potentially room with.

Just ideas…hope you all some major luck!

@fdominguez I see it as well. I’m sure it’s not an indication of anything.

hey guys did anyone send in a midyear report? On my USConnect there is an option for me to- but it doesn’t ask/tell me it’s required? I’d rather not send those in at the moment to be honest… :P
