***OFFICIAL UW FRESHMAN '24 THREAD*** ADMISSIONS/PREPARATION

As an IB diploma student, its so difficult to find information on previously admitted students… my school doesn’t do GPAs !!!

@maglor1 @cdhuehfu I do not know, but good luck!

Does UW Admissions have a twitter/Facebook account that they update when they post the decisions?

@cdhuehfu I def feel you on that

Is there anyone applying to Computer Engineering Major? Even if accepted, we will not recommend our DS to take the admission offer because UW doesn’t guarantee admission to major. It only guarantees admission to the college of engineering!

@nella2024 I applied for Computer Engineering. And ya you would go in as Engineering undeclared. However, I wouldn’t imagine it being that much harder if you’re already in their Engineering program, right?

@Houston1021 they would probs just post something on like the 16th after all decisions are released… at least i think so

Current UW CS student here. Whoever said UW CS is a “dangerous safety” is deeply wrong. If you are in state, then you have about 20% chance of getting in. If you are out of state or international, your chances are even lower (in the 10%s). It’s not a safety for anyone neither is it a match.

I’ll clarify the term of applying to Computer Science and Computer Engineering. When a pre-freshman applies to CS, they have the possibility of getting Pre-Sciences or Computer Science DA. When they apply to CE, you have the possibility of getting DTC (direct-to college of engineering) or pre-sciences. CS DA means you are IN the department while DTC means that you have to apply to CE to get it after your freshman year. CE is the hardest engineering concentration to get in the DTC system.

Not many people know this unless you are in the department, but you can switch from CE to CS and vice versa when you are in the major.

@orgjkjung thank you for the clarification. If accepted as a freshman for CE, my DS still has to reapply after the first year to get into CE. I already figured out that this is a highly competitive placement and not guaranteed at all … is this correct?

I think UW made this process NOT transparent AT ALL!!! They just trying to play a game with the yield. The admission offer for CE only means admission to Engineering, NOT really CE.

To clear things out, there are still 2 more hours left, so please don’t lose your hope. The reason why I am saying this is because last year it was released at that time, so I don’t why are people expecting the decision to be much sooner this year. So keep your spirit up guys and letslets hope it comes out today.

In fact, I just found this article, worth reading if you applied for engineering. If it is a highly impacted major, you are not guaranteed to be admitted to major:

For international students, is it fairly possible to get Direct admission into CS?

still nothing ?

do they send an email notifying a portal update or is it just checking constantly?

@balolo its just checking constantly. last year students who got emails were usually rejected or waitlisted

@nella2024 Indeed. Even if you get into DTC, you still have to apply to CE after being in the DTC program for a year. CE is the most popular concentration among all the DTC candidates and thus it’s competitive.

This process is really transparent – one needs to do the research to find out how UW’s complicated major system works. It may be complicated but the information is out there. I wouldn’t necessarily say that UW is playing a game of yield. CS/CE is consistently the most applied to major at the school and is one of the reason UW is famous. People should do their research properly before applying to specific majors.

I do know some international students who were offered DA here at the UW. It’s just harder than in-state because UW, being a public institution in Washington, has to commit towards its residents.

@juliarawson21 Sorry, but I don’t do chance mes. Chance mes are largely inaccurate and admission officers sees an applicant in several different lights.

can they just release the decisions already ugh
