Official Wash U RD Decisions - Class of 2011

Very good point, Punky.

Thank you Hindoo…I also was just thinking about the numbers Wash U wrote about in the acceptance letter…22000 applicants, class of 1350, about a yields of 35% (from US News), means about 4000 are accepted or around 18%. Then you have to figure that its less for regular admissions as early acceptance has about a 100% yield. Therefore, it really is a tough process and unfortunately, it is inherent that many talented kids will not be admitted.

haha, fruitloops, i know how you feel! I’m a little bewildered that I was actually admitted when all these people weren’t. I couldn’t figure out why I had - compared to all these 2400s and 4+ gpas, I was rather intimidated, so I said the coach was a fanatic, but he’s not. He’s been really very, very helpful. Perhaps he did talk to admissions, perhaps he didn’t. Either way, we got lucky! I’m very happy. and i know I worked hard the past couple of years, so im glad it paid off. I’m sure you deserved it!! I agree, don’t doubt yourself! You gotta admit, though, this whole thing is such a crapshoot.

edit this next part is just some ramblings… acutally this whole post is, so never mind. I should delete it, but… meh.

I’ve heard, and I can believe it, that for every student body that Harvard (or some other highly-ranked school) accepts there are 2 or so other (completely different) possible student bodies that they could accept while retaining just as good of a rank/reputation. A similar situation applies here. It’s a crap-shoot. And we can’t assume that people didn’t get rejected just because people on CC didn’t. Plus, it’s a way for them to weed out the people who don’t have a great enough interest to accept a spot on the waitlist.

 • WashU seems really thorough with their evaluation, and their admissions and financial aid offices are full of incredibly helpful and outgoing people. I know that they do a lot of work, yet they still find the time to be nice to me when I call with a question or problem. (Can you tell I’ve had a good experience with them??)

oi vey… imagine a school where computers were the admissions officers and they did everything by stats… that would be horrible!! then again, at some places it’s not much different. scary thought. i’d like to think that my whole identity can’t just be reflected on a piece of paper with grades and test scores. I hope that WashU looked and saw me as a complete person.

a lot of people probably won’t like this post, but here goes:

Okay let’s pretend two things for a second
1- Wash U just denied everyone they waitlisted, save 100 or so kids
2- Wash U was equal to harvard.

Suddenly, things would seem a lot more normal… , there would be no complaining about “why the hell wasn’t I admitted,” and people would just accept all the decisions as “the way things played out”

So what am I getting at here? Besides the fact that admissions seem amoral for waitlising everyone, Wash U is a very very good school (and under-rated) and is going to have to turn down a lot of very good applicants. Wash U is starting to become an “ivy-caliber” school–it should be less of a surprise that admissions seems so cut-throat.
I don’t like the fact that they waitlist so many kids, and I don’t think they can really justify it, it’s pretty unfair to the applicants, but I don’t think anyone should be that surprised if they were waitlisted.

**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:**I applied to Wash U on a whim since the deadline was later and I thought I should apply to more places just in case. TBH, I don’t really mind the waitlist and may end up rejecting it. Congrats to everyone who got in!

Why you think you were waitlisted? I pretty much anticipated it. Tough school to get into. I take this as a sign I am not supposed to go here. So far away, anyway.

waitlisted

Waitlisted also for CAS. Is there anything else we can do if we are waitlisted? Like sending a letter or any other extra stuff?

Well, I was waitlisted (SAT: 2200, GPA: 4.10). I was disappointed that I did not get in, as it was my top choice. I already have other offers, including a generous merit scholarship to a top LAC, but I would be prepared to turn it down to go to WashU, and will try my luck with the waiting list. Good luck, everybody!

[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: don’t know[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I really don’t understand Wash U’s decisions at all, but I wasn’t all that interested in Wash U anyway.

Ok, this is part of a post that I made on “The Infamous Waitlist” thread, but I think it applies here. This is to anyone that claims that WashU is being mean by inviting so many students to the waitlist and that they are just leading too many people on:

In any case, if you feel led on by being on the waitlist, that’s not because of anything WashU is doing; that is because of you. WashU doesn’t keep anyone “hanging on,” but rather the students that choose to go on the waitlist do that to themselves. Only the potential student can decide what being on the waitlist at one school means for their overall personal school selection process. If you want to interpret it as an outright rejection for the purposes of moving on and choosing a different school, that is your choice. If you want to interpret it as an invitation to fight for admission at that school by sending letters and making phone calls professing your love for that school, that is also your choice. By inviting you to be on the waitlist, WashU is only giving you another option and another thing to think about. However, they are not forcing you to add this complicating factor to your school selection process. You have the choice to reject your spot on the waitlist, so you are always in control.

Second, if you’re a student that actually wants to attend the school, being invited to join the waitlist is better than being outright rejected. If you are rejected, you have zero chance. If you join the waitlist, you have a chance, even if it is very small. No one really loses with a larger waitlist; more students have the (small) opportunity to later be admitted to the school, and WashU has more flexibility to create the best class that it can.

i’m too lazy to look, did anyone actually get rejected?

^no one on CC has reported a rejection yet

I posted this elsewhere, but I just heard from a friend that a girl at her school was outright rejected. First one I’ve heard so far.

wow oldolddad! you must be proud of S. I can’t wait to go to WashU with him (if he chooses to attend) and others of that caliber. Is he planning to do BME major?

I do not know if he can go. According to the folks on this board he is overqualified. His acceptance must have been a mistake!
He likes ME, Biomed, applied math and music. His visits to Wash U have been extremely positive, the profs really helpful, and he has interesting opportunities for research and BS/MS. In all honestly I do no know what he will do. We will see in 6 weeks. I think it will be a tough call.
