[] Teacher Recs: Superb
[] Counselor Rec: Unsure
[] Hook (if any): I’m white/male… so everything colleges don’t want!
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: IL
[] School Type: Competative
[] Ethnicity: White/Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Band (so many ECs…),
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: lack of passion in essays?
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: How lame, someone gets in from my school with a 28 but she’s black… hurrah for AA!

Decision: Accepted (!!!/How???)
GPA: 3.3 (school doesn’t weight), like 5th decile, but relatively competitive and WashU is in the district so it’s somewhat of a feeder school
ACT: 35
SAT: 2290
Recs: Didn’t see them, but really close with both of the teachers who wrote them, and one of them went to WashU
Essay: Jesus, spent so long on it. I guess it was good?
Activities: 2-year Lacrosse Captain, Football, Student Government, lots of Tutoring, and piano

I think what helped was the amount of interest I showed. Replied to every letter, sent emails, toured, went to Discovery Weekend, etc. etc. They dig that, or so I hear.

Congrats to everyone who got in, and good luck to everyone else.

virtuoso, did you check your decision online?

Yeah, I just checked.

Decision: Waitlisted (CAS)

Stats:
SAT I: 2220 (800 CR, 680 M, 740 W)
SAT IIs: 770 USH, 750 Math II
ACT
GPA: 3.93 UW, 4.25 W
Rank: 3
Other stats:
Subjective:
Essays: Not-so-great?
Teacher Recs: Didn’t read
Counselor Rec: Decent
Hook (if any): None
Location/Person
State or Country: CA
School Type: Bad public school
Ethnicity: Vietnamese
Gender: Male
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Extremely high need
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Not too unhappy. WashU isn’t my first choice anyways and I knew I would be waitlisted because of my high need. I didn’t really spend much time applying since all I did was submit the same app to WashU as my other schools

I wonder how much of a factor need is in the whole admissions process… I was told I made a mistake in applying to a non need-blind school, but I didn’t think it’d be that big of an issue. Or was I being naive because the waitlist note does make it sound like those offered a slot from the waitlist have absolutely no chance of obtaining financial aid?

Virtuoso, you seem to think need plays a major part in the process - did you hear any extra information about that?

Decision: WAIT-LISTED

Stats:
SAT I: 2110
SAT IIs: 700, 640 (760 and 750 on Jan SAT, but not sure if Wash U got those in time…)
GPA: 3.86
Rank: 6/375
Other stats: Congressional Page, CM Advanced, black belt/student instructor, some clubs, other generic ECs…

Subjective:
Essays: Spent quite some time on it, but very cliche topic
Teacher Recs: OK
Counselor Rec: pretty good
Hook (if any): None

Person/Location:
State or Country: California
School Type: poor/inner-city public
Ethnicity:Asian, Vietnamese
Gender: Male
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Financial aid, 0 EFC
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I believe I was deffered because of my low stats but mostly because I applied for financial aid…I am very high need and WashU obviously doesn’t think I’m worth paying for.

Other Factors: I thought I would have gotten rejected…but wait-listed it is. That’s better than what I expected, so I won’t complain. Anyways, Wash U is definitely not my top choice since the fin-aid is horrible for people with my need.

Congrats to all who got accepted!

^I frequently read on the forums that WashU does look at the financial situation when considering an admissions decision. I don’t have any hard facts to support that, though. I know that it’s not just my need. There may have been a lot of weak spots in my application, but need was certainly one of them.

Decision: Accepted!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2270 (V790 M770 W710)
[] SAT IIs: Lit 730, Math II 720
[] ACT: N/A
[] GPA: 3.62 UW (Hah, take that CC.)

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I think this is what got me in. I love writing, and I had been crafting my essays/short answers since my junior year.
[] Teacher Recs: Very strong. Shows who I am and what I love to do.
[] Counselor Rec: Very detailed. Tells colleges about my life story and my holistic ability as a student.
[] Hook (if any): Had to overcome a major heart surgery.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Hong Kong
[] School Type: Private International
[] Ethnicity: Asian American
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Great essays, awards and recommendations. Excellent extracurriculars - involved in a hell of a lot of activities. On the other hand, my GPA is horribly mediocre.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I suppose my high SAT score, my glowing teacher recs, and my essays helped to overturn the questionable GPA. Also, my GPA is only as low as it is because of a shaky first semester in 9th grade. My last semester of junior year was incredibly strong, so I guess the adcoms saw that I’d improved for the better.
[/ul]Other Factors: I also submitted a portfolio of my writing and art. I’d like to think that it helped my application along.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Too tired to feel excited, but since this is my first acceptance, this is real good news.

waitlisted as well… why are so many people waitlisted?? i mean what’s the intention of washU to waitlist so many more htan they can possible accept in the end???

Congrats!!! Nice to see someone NOT waitlisted! :p

WashU is messed up for waitlisting so many f’ing people. MAKE A DECISION!

Just to make things clear. There are a large number of students this year and in the past who had perfect SAT scores and got in. Also there are those who have been rejected by HYPS who got into Washu, those accepted at WashU and HYPS, and those accepted into HYPES and rejected by Wash U. As was stated above with 22000 apps it is a crap shoot and as with all top schools, not just stats. Anybody who visited the MIT board after EA decisions knows this…lots of perfect SAT’s deferred so it is not just Wash U. It is a lot of the top schools. This is one competitive game. Fortunately, all of the folks on this thread will have many great opportunities

why waitlist so many people though!? just to make us still feel hopeful and attached to washU?

I wonder if they got a big increase in the apps and are really unsure of the yield this year so they waitlisted more?

I was waitlisted :'(

Last year they ended up with a higher than expected yield (over 100 more freshmen than they expected). As a result they had a temporary housing crunch. They may initially be admiting less students in order to prevent a similair situation from occuring this year. It is safer for them to use a waitlist than to have another over enrolment.
