Official Yale 2011 Scea Thread

Actually, at the information session that I went to, they said that Yale does not use AP scores for any kind of credit. They may consider your scores for placement, but…

SENT! And I’m soooo relieved that it is! does a happy little dance Now all that I have to do is hope and keep my fingers crossed. I’ve done my best and there’s nothing more that I can do except keep my hopes up.

All I have left is the short answer, picking up my supplemental stuff, and then I will send it Monday afternoon.

But this short answer is somewhat annoying. What can be "elaborate"d on with only 150 words? Also, both of my essays are already on activities…

I’m done with my Common App essay and activity response as well as the Why Yale question. I just need to re-edit my supplement essay, then I’m waiting till tomorrow for any last-minute changes, and then I’ll submit.

Do your essays have titles? Are allowed to entitle our essays?

I guess you’re allowed to. I don’t think I’m titling mine.

Has anyone gotten a confirmation email or some other form of notification that Yale has received your application?? If so, how long after you applied did it arrive? I applied online last Sunday yet I have no received any indication that they have received my application. Can anyone clear up my confusion?

According to the CommonApp website, my app has been “downloaded”, I assume onto their server or whatever. Should we just call if we’re not sure whether or not the other parts of our app have arrived (recs, etc.)?

JEgan–

So I assume you haven’t gotten a confirmation email either? My app was ‘downloaded’ too, but no word yet from Yale…

Yeah, same. Hm.

I totally forgot about sending my score report to Yale and just did it a little while ago. I received a confirmation email about my score report on Oct. 22 and my CollegeBoard account says the ‘process date’ was Oct. 25. Should I send a rush report to make sure Yale gets my scores on time or will I be okay? (All of my other stuff- teacher recs, school report, online app.- is already in.) Did everyone else send their reports a long time ago?

I sent my score reports when I took the test… last June, before I even decided on Yale EA. They still have those right?

Also, I am panicking now, because through much effort I have produced a decent CD for my music supplement (or so I’d thought). My piano teacher reviewed it and pronounced it accomplished enough to send. My music school’s director reviewed it simultaneously and called us, saying that the recording quality was not up to par of potential “standards” and that I “absolutely should not send it”, even though the quality of my playing on that CD is probably if not at, then at least near, my best.
The Yale website states that professional quality is not necessary. I recorded this in an auditorium with professional equipment- but on an upright non-Steinway piano. My director insists that since it is not of professional quality, it would be very disadvantageous, and that I really should not send it.
My next opportunity to schedule recording time in an actual studio may be near Thanksgiving. Also, the quantity of pieces that I would record would be less, as I have other repertoire to prepare for upcoming performances and cannot afford to keep all of these pieces at this level. Should I just send this and then send a replacement when I am able to? Should I just not send it at all? Should I just send it and hope for the best? I am really anxious about this now. What do you all think? Thanks

chatterbox673 - I requested my SAT scores on 9/26, and MIT received my scores within 2-3 weeks.

juniorinhs - sorry, I know nothing about music supplements.

juniorhs, i would send it. so long as it shows your technical ability and your expression, i think you will be fine. they understand that not every recording is going to be professional quality, and a true piano player will know if you are playing well, even if the piano isn’t amazing.

also, i sent my sat scores along with my october 14th sat II (when i registered way back in august i put yale as a school to receive my scores), but the scores don’t actually come out until november 1st. i think i’ll be fine because i submitted my act scores a few weeks ago, so even if they don’t get my sat scores by november 1st, they’ll have my act scores… it shouldn’t be a problem for them to get my scores after november 2nd, though, right? like, they’ll still include them in my application?

bluetissues - I did the same thing as you with my Oct. 14th SAT II scores… and my guidance counselor said something about the collegeboard sending out encrypted scores to schools/colleges since they realized that early admissions applicants needed their scores on Nov. 1st. It may be rumor, but that is what I was told.

Okay, so I sent in the apps online, then went back to common app to check for confirmation and in the blank where my organized list of additional ecs and honors should be, there were lines of words bunched up together. This may be obvious, but are the colleges gonna view this mess or the neat application format when I click print preview?

Also, I thought something in the supp warned against clicking the “Back” button because it might create uploading problems for the adcoms. I don’t remember exactly what it said, but after i submitted by Yale supplement, I clicked on it to check but then, without thinking, clicked the back button. Is this going to create problems, even though it was after I submitted the application?

My Personal Statement(500 word limit): 562 words
My Activity Short Answer(150 word limit): 190 words
My Yale Supplemental Essay(500 word limit): 580 words
My “Why Yale?”(50 word limit): 83 words

I’m so ****ed it’s not even funny!! I’m also stubborn, which makes it even worse.:(

I like how everyone on this thread is FREAKING OUT.

I mean, I am too, but it still makes me laugh.

Dekans6 - I think you’re legit.
Evil_asian - I’m in the same boat (although I fit in my stuff on the shorter oines), but I just went ahead and submitted it. No regrets!
bluetissues - I think the Yale website says that the Oct. test date is fine. But don’t quote me on that.

I do have a question of my own though – on the common app I checked that I was filing for financial aid, but now I’m not sure if I’m going to get the app in on time. That’s not a big deal to me, but will they process my application as “incomplete” and automatically defer me to RD if I’m missing that form?

I sent my score reports when I took the SAT last June, before I even decided on Yale EA. They still have those right?

EAD–

both my long essays were about 600 words, my short answer was 170, my why yale was 60…my counselor said it’s not that big of a deal, that they don’t really hold a little extra against you, and they just want to prevent people from sending “manuscripts.”

Also, my friend who got into Yale, Stanford and Harvard last year had essays that were about that amount over the limit, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
