and dekans, I titled both my essays

and I haven’t gotten any confirmation yet either and I’m mildly freaking out…like not even that it was ‘downloaded’ or anything

I just received a confirmation email from Yale this morning saying that my application has been received and entered into their database.

However, it also says this: “Due to the high volume of mail we receive at this time, we are not able to answer specific questions about the status of each application. However, you will receive another notification when your application is complete or if we find that any of the documents necessary for the review of your file are missing.”

Does this mean we can’t call and ask about the status of our apps?

Yeah, don’t ask. It’s not a huge problem if something’s missing anyway. They’ll contact you in time.

Gah I’m about to make my FINAL edits to my essays. Here’s where I’m at:

Activity - 147 words
Common - 511 words
Supplement - 491 words
Why Yale - 50 words

I don’t know HOW my supplement essay is below 500. It was about 750 a couple days ago, and my Common essay was like 680. I kinda wish our English teachers assigned some 500-word essays once in a while, just to practice condensing rather than stretching stuff out over 4-5 pages. Boo.

Don’t worry about it, the moral of the story is that you did your best. :P

One question - I sent my stuff to Yale yesterday on the CommonApp site and I got a confirmation notice, but not that long “Due to the high volume of mail we receive at this time, we are not able to answer specific questions about the status of each application. However, you will receive another notification when your application is complete or if we find that any of the documents necessary for the review of your file are missing.” bit. I aslo didn’t get anything in my email. What does this mean?

OMG I love you!!! At least I’m not the only applicant who went over the word limit lol. Although, I think I should shorten my Short Answer essays a little since in those it seems like the word limit would be more closely scrutinized in those.

Hey Koena, are you Indian by any chance?

My Yale supplement essay was a little too long, but my other stuff was within close bounds under the word limit.

WOW. All my essays are EXACTLY at the word limit right now. I don’t know why, but that feels like a huge accomplishment. xP

Sigh I almost edited this post to omit unnecessary words, and then remembered there’s no word limit on CC. I think I’m going crazy.

EAD,

I love you too, I love you too.

I already sent it in (and, by the way, got the confirmation email this morning!), so it’s a little late to try and change things, but thanks anyways for the suggestion :)

I am partially Indian, but also have Iran and Pakistan thrown in there…I’m kind of an eclectic combination of a lot of stuff that will hopefully merit a minority label, but I’m not really sure.

I’m assuming you’re Asian…

Sorry, I read “would” instead of “should”

I would do whatever you think is best…if you think cutting words hugely takes away from the piece, then don’t risk it. At one point, I got one of my essays down to 520, but it just didn’t flow, so I did the best I could and settled on 620…and my Harvard-Yale-Stanford friend liked the longer version a lot better, as did I, so I just went for it.

And even on the short answers, I honestly don’t think it’s that big of a deal if you go 20-30 words over even if it is a bit more evident…but that’s my counselor’s/my completely inexperienced opinion so yeah.

I just got home from the Post Office.
I’m so nervous! I can totally understand now why people say they turn religious about this time. hehe.

First drafts were exactly 500 but have subsequently changed a bit. I just made them 500 for fun–it just meant changing a few prepositions etc.

My short answer is 150, the short Why Yale? ditty is 50, and the supplemental essay is 500. My other essay, however, is 530 and refuses to be cut down any further, so I think I’ll just send it at that length.

I cut mine down to EXACTLY 500, 150, and 50 lol. It was definetly difficult, but I was still able to do it pretty well without losing a lot of quality. It just helps me breathe easier that I know that there’s no way they would cut it off

Ditto .

I’m extremely worried about my counselor recs and teacher recs not arriving on time or being sent back (the counselor recs were too heavy what with my transcripts and needed extra postage, but the only one that didn’t come back in the mail was Yale’s, and it was sent a month ago) but when I called the Yale admit office today, their automated message said that you are NOT to call and ask about the status of your app.

So my email from Yale says they’d notify me by Nov. 27 or something ridiculously late like that if any part of my app was missing. So does this mean that I won’t be considered for EA if my stuff didn’t arrive on time?

Ugh, I’m sorry, I’m just so worried about this.

DONE!
I’m done!
I submitted the common app and the supplement online, and then went out and mailed my other supplements (resume and stuffs).
Ahhh, this is such a relief. Of course, I’m already beginning to dread the rejection part, but at least the application stress is OVER. now to get all those other schools done too…lol.

WHEW! what a relief that was…or maybe it isn’t, considering I can’t tweak it to death anymore. Best of luck everyone!

Can someone enlighten me - what exactly is the point of the 50 word ‘Why Yale’ part? Are you supposed to extol the virtues of Yale (which everyone says NOT to do since they know enough about their own school)?

Who all hasn’t sent in the application yet? I’ve sent in the mailing part (guidance, teacher recs) but I still am in the final stages of revising my essay. And I have to go to guidance tomorrow to double-check my ACT scores since the stupid ACT site doesn’t bother to give them to you without charging out the butt and sending them to you over snail mail. Why can’t they be as efficient as CollegeBoard?

Yeah, ACT scores take forever.

I haven’t submitted my app yet. I’m making the final touches on my essays right now, and then I’ll need to make sure everything is in tip-top shape, and then it’s going in.
