koena - thanks for posting the format. now, whos first?

I’ll go 2nd

I’ll post mine as soon as I get my new ACT scores, which have been delayed for over a week now! ugh.

I’ll go third :)

well, i would post mine but im not applying this yr (still a junior)

koena- I’m not sure if I’ll notify Yale about NFAA. Probably, though. I guess what it comes down to is there’s no harm in doing it, but I have a feeling it wouldn’t have too much impact at that point. I’d definitely tell them if I was deferred.

I’ll go fourth. Wait, when is this happening?

Once we decide who goes first :D

I have a question about the interview: did anyone else have to print out a sheet and fill it out prior to taking their interview? This may only pertain to the Philadelphia Alumni Interviews, but I wasn’t sure. The reason I ask is because the questions ask for your activities, hobbies, favorite subjects, best times in high school, etc. that all seem to be good interview questions. I’m guessing that this sheet will guide my interview, so I won’t have to worry about what questions I’ll be asked as long as I don’t have trouble filling out the sheet. The other possibility is this is something the interviewer wants to see so he can focus on other questions, but it seems like the questions on the sheet are vital to a good interview. Anybody agree with me or have any advice?

Fine, I’m going to take the initative, because I’m curious about everyone else. But on the other hand, I don’t think I want to know…

Counselor Rec: Didnt read
Interview (feel and general location): Starbucks; started off slow, but we were both interested in Cognitive Science and both lived abroad so it took off; it went well overall
Hook (if any): I’m not exactly positive what the meaning of ‘hook’ entails, but I’ll give it my best shot: Lived in China for three years, multi-ethnic, legacy (dad/cousin), mad writing skillz

State or Country: Ohio
School Type, Average Stats of School: Competitive Public; two into Yale RD last year, Im not sure about years past, but at least 1 per year I think
Ethnicity: Pakistani-Indian-Iranian American (its complicated)
Gender: Female
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
Income Bracket: high
Other Factors: Sent in a supplementary writing profile. A good family friend from Yale wrote a letter on my behalf. I think I overloaded them with material, what with exceeding the word limit on the essays, 2 supplementary letters of rec, and a supplementary writing profile, but whatev.

Should we consider reposting after decisions come out, those of us who want to at least? Because I was hoping the stats post could be somewhat climactic… ;)

koena- first of all, wow. Second, what writing awards have you won? I’m curious because I’m always looking for more competitions to enter.

Also, how the heck did you raise $25,000? that’s some serious fundraising skill…

does raising $10,000 for your school count? lol (producing successful shows roll in the $$)

• Other stats:
Subjective:
• ECs listed on app: Debate (quarterfinalist at NFL nationals last year, first in state, qualified to the TOC already this year, numerous local/natl circuit awards), forensics (semifinalist at NFL nationals sophomore year, finalist at state, NFL speech & debate All-American, numerous local awards), Allegro Community Choir (pretty prestigious area girls’ choir… we’ve toured in DC, NYC, London, Canterbury, and done numerous choir festivals and conferences), newspaper (editor-in-chief, some awards), student government (class president all 3 years, District Student Speaker, chaired multiple committees, etc.). Community service (mostly done through Allegro – we do a lot of benefit work. President’s service award, gold, 250+ hours per year for four years).
Also got the NCTE Achievement Award in writing and a bunch of other local stuff. Nothing really big though.
• Job/Work Experience: 5 years at family-owned deli
• Essays (subject and responses): both pretty good (I think), both hard to explain. One was about writing.
• Teacher Recs: One glowing, one I suspect wasn’t very good (no way of knowing though)
• Counselor Rec: outstanding
• Interview (feel and general location): His law firm. Went pretty well.
• Hook (if any): I doubt this is a “hook”, but I’ve had a LOT of debate success. Too bad Yale doesn’t have a team (my partner’s already talked to the debate coach at Harvard about debating there).
Location/Person:
• State or Country: KS
• School Type, Average Stats of School (if available) : Public, 1200ish kids, way upper income but like 90% of kids who go onto college stay in state.
• Ethnicity: white
• Income Bracket: high
• Gender: female
• Strengths/Weaknesses: my math scores are just devastatingly low
• Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
Other Factors: I’d major in English and history. Stressed my desire to take part in the Directed Studies program, not that this would have any impact at all.
Oh, and I was a natl merit semifinalist.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

I wish I had known that people were sending in supplementary writing portfolios. Oh well, it happens. And I wish I had more actively sought out contests–I really didn’t do any of that because I’m lazy, I guess.

Jegan, you’re awesome! I hope that 630M isn’t what decides your app. Your debate stuff is great! What event do you do

Haha, thanks b4nnd20… you’re pretty awesome yourself. I do policy debate, foreign/international extemp, and oratory. KS is weird (we split up the forensics and debate seasons so first semester is debate, second is forensics).

Lol all my confidence in my application went down the drain when I saw koena’s 25K fundraiser. My fundraiser raised a measly 700 dollars

My turn!

o Interact President (11, 12); Secretary (10)
o Literary Magazine Ed-in-Chief (12); Assoc. Ed. (10, 11)
o Traveled to El Salvador twice with Interact, raised $10,000 to build a total of 11 homes and sponsor 2 orphanages, as well as gathering a ton of medical supplies for local clinics.
o 1st chair Bassoon (12) and 1st chair Bari Sax (9, 10) in Band
o 13 years of private piano lessons

• Job/Work Experience: Babysitting, playing piano at various events. I also teach private piano lessons to 4 of my own “students,” and I peer tutor in writing, Latin, and history.
• Essays (subject and responses): 1st one about how being the only girl (and being shunned for it) in karate when I was in first grade went on to make me confident and respectful. 2nd one about playing soprano sax at a nursing home and seeing a wheelchair-bound married couple “dancing” to my music–my English teacher cried.
• Teacher Recs: 11th grade honors English: glowing. This teacher is amazing and we have a wonderful relationship. 11th grade AP U.S. History: almost glowing; this teacher isn’t quite as powerful a writer as the other one.
• Counselor Rec: Didn’t read, but my GC and I are good friends and he’s always impressed with me
• Interview (feel and general location): I had an on-campus interview in August. The girl was great, and we had a lot of the same interests. The fact that it was my first-ever interview for my first-choice school and that I got a good feeling about it really made me happy.
• Hook (if any): No legacy, no athlete, totally abiding upon my merits. I guess my hook is that I’m a really good writer and, while I don’t do a lot of EC’s, i’m UBERpassionate about the ones that I do, and my short answer definitely shows that.
Location/Person:
• State or Country: New Hampshire
• School Type, Average Stats of School: Public. Good by comparison, but I don’t think we’ve ever sent anyone to Yale. That could be good, though, because I also don’t think that many kids from my school apply to Yale to begin with
• Ethnicity: white (again, totally unhooked)
• Gender: Female
• Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
• Income Bracket: high

Other Factors: Sent in a detailed activity sheet and 2 glowing evaluations from a summer program I took. We also have a big-donor family friend whose name is on a Yale building (haha) who wrote a letter on my behalf, but I’m not sure if it’ll do any good, since there’s no relation.
