eli - which ones?

evil_asian, I don’t think it has anything to do with my being or not being proactive. I was assured the October ACT would be fine for EA. I consider this the ACT’s fault at this point, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed the scores will come in this week…

vegangirl, I hope things work out for you…I agree that this seems to be the ACT’s fault, maybe there’s a way of explaining that to Yale? Good luck!

I haven’t even started any of my other applications besides the common app supplements…how bad is that lol

And as for the Official Yale SCEA Decisions thread, which someone mentioned before, I’ll start it if no one else will, despite the fact that I’m essentially the least technologically literate person ever…that’s more of a warning than an intent of action, so someone else should probably step it up… ;)

Koena07- how many applications do you have apart from common app supplements? I mean thats basically all I have to fill out now that the common application is finished.

potus2-I have 5 apps outside of the common app, two of which won’t require too much effort outside of what I already have. Even so, the CA supplements are killing me…like, besides one or two, every supplement has ridiculously different essays…a la Penn’s or Hopkins’. Insane.

But yeah, what about you?

sirius and sportsman - the app prep class grew out of working with an SAT/ACT counselor. She said that she offers it to only 20 kids (and it cost an arm and a leg to do it :(), mostly those who are applying to Ivies and need that extra “something.” It’s once a week, and Shari (the lady) reads my essays, helps edit them for grammar/diction/size, and helps me brainstorm other topics, as well as giving me some advice. She’s incredible – she went to Georgetown and either Harvard or Yale and another school, and she reads for Harvard, so she knows little tidbits of information. The sessions have definitely helped me not be so stressed about the experience :p

theoneo - the Franklin College I’m talking about is in Lugano, Switzerland. It actually would be a perfect fit for me – the ability to hop a bus to Germany/France/Italy over the weekend, the requirement of two weeks of international travel every semester, the ability to, as a swiss citizen, obtain a dual degree and pay less tuition – if not for the fact that it’s obviously very far from home and that it has only 400 people, about half the size of my high school :(

Wow, that “app prep class” sounds like the college counseling experience at my school. I’m very lucky to have that at my disposal rather than having to pay for it.

That sounds like the exact OPPOSITE of what I have at my school.
Literally, I can’t even imagine what it’s like to have a guidance counselor who knows what college is.
“Hm, Erica, I see that you’re applying to Yale. Now where is that again? California? I think it’s probably a safety for you.”

Yeah, the app prep class has been my main prep for applications. My school’s interesting that way – our counselors definitely care (mine pulled me aside one day to ask if I were doing okay b/c he said I was looking jumpy…I’d failed another Stats quiz and was bummed, but all right), but I’ve talked very little about college with mine. Maybe he figured I’m the type to be on top of things…? Because according to my friends, the counseling department does “hold the hand” of certain people applying to schools, but I don’t know which people specifically.

Still, much as I love my app prep lady, I do wish that the course were part of my tuition and not extra money :(

vegan girl…good luck on the ACT scores. I’m sure everything will work out. Frankly, if Yale doesn’t accept you, I’ll be pretty stunned. I’ve looked through your stats and they’re amazing. It’s really cool to see more people with writing/english stuff on here, because all the people who’ve gotten in to Yale from my school have been math and science people :)

Ah! Since everyone seems to read this thread, can you guys go over and take a look at my thread entitled “Well…” it’s for chances and I’d REALLY appreciate some feedback. I’m so curious to know what you guys think, even though I think I have like no chance whatsoever. That’d be SO cool and I’d love you guys forever (even though I would either way, cause you’re all the coolest and if I went to school with you, I’d be happy definitely).
THANKS SO MUCH :)

sirius, i feel your pain. A friend of mine accidently applied to NYU ED and BC EA. His guidence counselor told him he this was possible, although I checked for him and of course, BC does not allow that possibility. Welcome to public school.

I feel that some of the counselors at my school care. Although I have faced criticisms for applying to a number of ivies from half of my school’s counseling department, “Six schools, JAG, six schools! Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth are completely different from each other. Why are you applying to all of these?” “Because I want to leave Miami and I refuse to settle for FIU like half of my classmates, and because I’ve worked hard enough these past seven years to have the grades and EC’s to have a good chance at these schools. I want change, and I want to be able to learn outside of the Miami environment at a top-calibur school that I am confident…”, at least my assigned counselor seems to care. I did hire an outside counselor, though, to help out with essays, résumé preparation, etc., and she’s been incredibly supportive of my choices.

Koena07… It all depends on the 15th. I’ll probably add either Stanford or Brown in the event of a rejection and then another safety though I’m not sure which one. But yeah as of right now they are ALL common app which makes me happy inside…!

I’m really unclear about something. Please help me. Did you guys include a teacher recommendation form together with your supplemental rec(s) or did you just send only a letter from the additional recommender(s)?

Just a letter .

Dekans–Just a letter here, too.

Potus–we’re kind of in a similar situation!

By the way, you probably know this but just in case you don’t, Stanford is due on the 15th…so, if you do in fact get rejected from Yale (which I hope you don’t), you’ll have to submit it immediately…it’s a possibility I’m currently kind of struggling with too.

And I agree that common app schools are generally cool…however, I can’t get over some of those supplements…as you can probably tell lol

jag82177–I totally know how you feel! While I definitely think my school counselors care as well, they strike me almost as naive in outlook, at least regarding the more selective schools. Like, I love my guidance counselor to death, but he has this formula which he expects everyone to follow: 2 safeties, 2 reaches, 1 middle-of-the-road school. He nearly had a mild heart attack when I told him I’m applying to 10 reach schools lol…but I feel the same way as you; I worked hard to try and get out of Ohio and to a top school…why shouldn’t I go for it? It’s kind of frustrating at times, as I’m sure you know.

Thanks !

I’m actually really satisfied with my guidance department. We send a lot of kids to top schools, so I guess they’re used to dealing with long lists of Ivies and stuff. We usually have 30+ (10%) people applying early to Ivies. Haha, I guess the whole state of NJ is like this, though. I saw on another thread that we have the highest rate of students LEAVING the state for college. I love this state. :p

Wow, all of these private college counselors sound cool, and really helpful! I just continue to hope Yale will take pity on me for being a kid from a clueless public school. My counselor almost mailed Yale an incorrect transcript and only half the school report form. Pretty cool;)
