seriously folks, if 2 white kids gunned down a black guy because they were “bored”, you really don’t think the media would be all over this as a hate crime…and race wouldn’t have been brought up from the very start?

I personally think they were gang wannabes from what I’ve heard. Maybe they thought this was their ticket in? I don’t know, but another obvious example of the disregard many have for life.

Violent video games did NOT cause this but we need to stop glorifying violence and violent criminals. Murder, rape, gun violence, etc should be as revolting to us as cannibalism. What’s going wrong that it’s not?

And no, the answer is not the fact that they have a single mom. (Which at least 2 of them did not)

Does anyone know where they got the gun? That person should also be charged with murder, unless it had been reported as stolen.

^ Not sure about murder, but I definitely agree 100% that they need to be punished as well. (Any judgement about WHAT they should get would be a completely gut reaction rather than a legal one so I’ll leave that to others.)

geeps, it wasn’t two black kids gunning down a white guy. It was one black kid, one mixed-race kid, and one white kid gunning down the first person they saw that they could kill “for fun.”

Apparently this was the second murder of a student at this school in less than a year, and for a similar reason:

I fully admit to my own ignorance, but I had always perceived places like Oklahoma to be free from this kind of thing.

sally, so it was just the first person they saw…you know that for a fact?..Why do some so easily dismiss the possibility of a race crime when a white is a victim…but are the first to blame it on race when a black is the victim? honest question…the media starts it and people blindly follow?

Regarding the races of the killers: From the photos I’ve seen posted, it is not clear to me what their races are. sally305, how do you have that information? Generally, race is self-identified in this country, regardless of what we might think another person’s race is (see, i.e., our prez).

I don’t know how I feel about Thomas Sowell’s complete theory in his book, “Black Rednecks and White Liberals”, but the kind of callous culture he discusses in the book seems to be the problem to me. I believe it stems from the hip hop/gangster culture I grew up with in the 80’s/90’s, and the attitudes they have towards life/pride/violence.

Chris Rock talks about the changes in the how violence towards others is perceived in his comedy acts, talking about getting into fights when he grew up in school. People would fight in grade schools 100 years ago, but it was inconceivable to even think about grabbing a gun or a knife and actually kill or maim the other person. That unwritten rule has been replaced with not letting another person make you look weak in public at all costs. It seems selfish to me, like valuing one’s pride more than another’s life.

geeps, I would not dismiss the possibility that it was a race crime. From what I have read, it wasn’t, and as stated there was a mix of races among the perpetrators.

Bay, the race of each kid was posted earlier in this thread.

Do you mean in jonri’s post #39? She based their races off her own perception of them in the photos.

It was a hate crime, but it will never ever be labeled as such because of who the victim was. You will also never ever hear any outcry or President’s very personal comments about him being just like a victim. Nope, no comments from Jesse or Al, they are comletely happy and content with this. No biggy, just another joined so many. I do not know the race of the attackers. But by reaciton of the Pres., Jesse and Al, I can make a definite conclusion…isn’t it so great, we do not need to know real life details any more, we can conclude everything just by the way of the political wind blowing one direction or another. Thank you, political greats, you keep me informed without listenning to news anymore.

Bay, are you saying this woman isn’t white? (This is the mother of the biracial kid.)

Sorry–you have to scroll to the fourth picture. Jennifer Luna is her name.

Seriously, people need to stop reading “The Blaze” and “Daily Caller” for their news.

I’ve never supported the concept of “hate” crimes, as they elevate the value of one persons life over another based on race or orientation.

I think it is telling about the killers that when they threatened to kill their next victim by text message, that threat was taken seriously and the police were immediately called. These were not good kids who were just bored and unemployed.

Miami, you are being ridiculous. By your logic the President should comment on every single murder every single day, lest he look “content” with the rate of gun violence in this country. Give me a break.

Sally,
The mothers race is irrelevant. The woman who cuts my hair is white and adopted two kids from Mexico.

Obamas mother is white and he calls himself black.

Zimmermans dad is white and he calls himself Hispanic.

Was that really necessary? I’ve posted to sites that wouldn’t offend anyone’s sensibilities and I hadn’t seen the mother anywhere else and, frankly, had assumed that the boy in question was white just because of his looks. This is such big news all over the world that there is a huge amount of information and what you have found might not be what Bay has already seen even on sites that you like.

Then Bay, how is it your role to decide what race the kid is? And you did this by what–looking at his photo?

zoozermom, I mentioned that because when I tried to google the race of the victims the top results were all race-baiting articles from right-wing news sources. The major news sources have yet to describe the killing as race-motivated.

I don’t know why we can’t all agree that this was a heinous, unimaginable crime and leave it at that. This story makes me absolutely sick, and their race/financial circumstances/absentee fathers/boredom/whatever makes no difference in how much I would like to see them punished.

Why? Was it because it was in a smallish town?

Sally,
Huh? I was the one who said I could not tell their races from the photos I’ve seen.
