Oldtimers and newcomers: how did you discover CC?

Don’t forget to tip your waitresses.

I googled college information 6 years ago when I was starting to help my oldest find college choices. Found CC and have been on and off since then.

It’s been incredibly instructive and helpful, but can also be infuriating when some posters act rudely. That’s usually when I tune out for a while.

Same here…I think I was actually googling a certain college. I tend to google very specifically.

For our family, CC has been invaluable and actually ‘life-altering’. If not for counsel from other UNC parents, my d would not have even attempted to make the oos cut there. And now ldgirl is a happy Tar Heel. I guess I’ll eventually become an old-timer since I still have one more to go through the process.

Searching, although I can’t remember what for. I lurked on PR and xoxo as well, but I didn’t start posting until it was application time ().

“CC has been invaluable and actually ‘life-altering’”

I’ll second this… not for the college information, which has
been great… but in the sense that CC has made me think
hard about the nature of community, and how to nurture
healthy community.

I have lurked for many years, taking a short break until recently-next child coming up and grad school research. Discovered CC after NMF google five years ago. Thanks to the old and new timers for their information, opinions and insight.

Through Google, too (looking for college info). I lurked for a bit, then couldn’t resist. Boy, am I hooked!

Through P-R-I-N-C-E-T-O-N R-E-V-I-E-W website when my D was in 5th or 6th grade. She is a senior now.

D was having a problem with college board (score report delayed more than 8 weeks for absolutely no good reason). Found CC in the process of looking for advice on dealing with College Board. She was our third and last to go. Wish I’d found CC sooner. She’s now a junior and beginning the PhD application process…but she’s in total charge of that. I’m still here because I have 16 nieces and nephews to help through the college application process (or that’s my excuse anyways)!!!

Like the OP, I was looking at a website like College P–er and I was freaking out about all the awful things some kids were saying about about their college experience, so I googled something related to that, and came accrosss CC. The kind folks here immediately set me straight and told me not to take those kinds of websites too seriously. I then lurked around and was hooked. I am still lurking… Hopefully I will add some value as my oldest D goes through the process.

WashDad, time for another joke!

I came across CC over 2 years ago, when S1 was in 7th grade and I was googling for information on a CTY issue. I found the archives a treasure trove of information relevant to MS students, and it wasn’t long before I was posting requests for information and advice about issues that have cropped up both for S1, now in 9th grade, and S2, now in 4th grade, as well as completely irrelevant (to education) topics like appliances. I have not been shy about posting on other threads, either.

I love CC, and consider it a wonderful community as well as a resource.

Yep, I began on PR about 2000, when the CC board was very small with not so many posts. No clue how I found either of them except my DD was in 11th grade and it was time, or maybe it was really too later for that D, I should have begun sooner, as I have learned so much and done great things in guiding the other kids.

Oh, and back then, it was dial up

Dial up? And were you on AOL like most of us were?

I found CC through Googling PSAT (no surprise there) exactly four years ago. D is now a sophomore in college, but I’ve still got my son - a high school junior.

Nope, no AOL, some random cheapie off brand…saving $ for college ;)

I’m another PSAT googler ==> CC addict.

Was too long ago to remember.

Several years ago I was looking for ED decision date for my D’s college of choice–the school seemed to be running late and not being clear or informative about when letters were being sent out, even though just about every other school had already notified its ED applicants. I must have Googled something about early decision in general and discovered CC.

I dipped into PR a few times, but wasn’t yet focussed on college. Someone on AOL gave me the link for CC many years ago. I posted a few times then, but really became a regular when Mathson was a junior.

PSAT googler

Ha! I could not google the PSAT because my Ds volleyball team went to a far away tournament that week, she did not take it- gasp, choke, gag, at the time I thought it was crazy- or maybe I went a little crazy;), later I learned it was just not that big a deal though we did miss out on some fun mail!
