Olympian Oscar Pistorius charged with girlfriend's murder

How awful!!

Heard this on the morning news. Awful!

Was talking about this this morning. Another tainted athlete. :frowning:

We’ll see what story holds, but sure isn’t looking good.

Pistorius sponsor Nike has removed this ad from its website

Society always assumes that someone who has overcome a disability is somehow a better human being than the rest of us. Guess that just isn’t true.

Terribly sad for all concerned. :(

Folks who met him at the Olympics talked about him being a “sweet soul” or something like that. But then I guess the cops had been called to their place in the past for domestic violence issues. So even if he did mistake her for an intruder, the prior alleged domestic violence sort of cooks his goose.

Gah, if there had been DV in the past it breaks my heart even more. Then again, resources for DV survivors are not always plentiful or easily available.

No matter the reason, a beautiful young woman was needlessly taken. Too tragic.

Who knows what the details of the previoius DV were? The police specifically said it didn’t involve the victim here and it looks, from this article and others, that it might have been something silly.

No, ZM, but I hope if anyone finds out they share it. I hadn’t heard that it didn’t involve the victim so thanks for that info!

Did anyone hear a report that she surprised him for V-day and he thought she was an intruder?

I’m at work…someone I work with mentioned that they had heard that on the news…

rodney, IIRC, that was a rumor that was quickly refuted by the police.

I’ve read in a couple of places (which might mean they are all the same article in different locations) that the victim wasn’t involved in the previous incident and the previous incident involves him slamming a door and something falling. If that were the criteria for domestic violence, I think a lot of people (myself included) would be arrested. It’s also been said everywhere that I’ve seen that he is cooperating with the police.

I always say that when something looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it could be a fat guy in a duck suit trying to sell you a used car.

interesting piece in NYT from reporter that had spent time w him:

http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/14/the-adrenaline-fueled-life-of-oscar-pistorius/

South Africa is a land where people live in fear of violence.

Just when I thought nothing could top the Suzy Favor Hamilton story.

I know a lot of people are saying that it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck…but I want to wait and see how this one plays out.

Strange that this happened on Valentine’s Day

This is horrible news for everybody except Lance Armstrong.

Good one, Hunt!!

Yeah- and the Alabama football players.
