Olympics 2018

@sevmom, thanks for the tip-just watched it, and you’re right, how great.

I really enjoyed watching the short program in ice dancing. All of them! It’s very obvious of the difference in ability from the first flight to the last but they were all fun to watch. I loved that Tessa and Scott were, once again, perfection and received their highest personal score. I felt so sorry for Gabriella and Guillaume and their costume issue. How awful for her to have to skate like that. I’m hoping for a great night tonight for all the skaters and that they all feel happy with their free dance.

Am I the only one that doesn’t get too excited about the Shibutanis?

Me. I mean… they are fine. But not my favorites. I think it is hard as a brother/sister team – they can’t do the same kind of romantic routines that others can. It is great to have 3 US teams doing so well this year, though.

Even aside from the romantic stuff, I think they lack some pizzazz and style.

They need to hold back , clearly, with any romantic stuff, given they are brother and sister. That may effect their style, charisma, in general. It is an interesting dynamic that coaches and parents must have thought worked early on. They might have done better being split up earlier and having different partners. Who knows.

Well, they are doing pretty well. But I’m obviously no expert. I focus on the style and feeling the skaters evoke more than technical skill. I love the Italians, for example.

I like the Sibs. They are fun to watch. But that Canadian couple are awesome!

The Korean ice dancer Min wins gold for her costume. Loved it!

So many amazing ice dancing teams! But I was in tears with the American pair Bates and Chock at the end of their routine. To skate with so much emotion and then fall!

Okay, they are coy about it, but they are way too steamy on the ice to not be involved off of it.

What a great night of ice dancing. So happy for Tessa and Scott!

They deserved that gold! Looking forward to watch the French at the next Olympics.

CBC just showed a montage of performances by Tessa and Scott through the years. It was lovely. They have been skating together for 20 years, starting when she was 8 and he was 10. An amazing career. The most decorated Olympic figure skaters of all time.

Couldn’t find this online last night but here it is!

^^^^Darn, tried to watch it and keep getting a “We are experiencing technical difficulties” message.

Did you hear about the half-pipe skiier who did zero tricks? She’s American but on the Hungarian team. The article below said, “While she finished last or close to last in all those world cup events, qualifying for the Olympics requires a minimum number of top-30 finishes and there’s rarely 30 women competing.” Too funny.

Despite spending 2 months in a US jail for domestic abuse, a Russian hockey player is on OAR team. The LA Kings fired him and the NHL suspended him.

From one of the articles Snowball City linked in the assault/harassment thread:

The Kings did end his contract but in the weeks after he was arrested, the team was fined $100,000 for allowing him to continue practicing with the team. That was in direct contravention of his league suspension.

Mike Milbury’s comment was appalling. I have no idea why NBC employs him in their hockey coverage.
