Absolutely disgusting. That guy plea bargained a misdemeanor. He should have been locked up for at least a couple of years.
Virtue and Moir are the reincarnation of Torvill and Dean. They transcend their sport, and turn it into art.
I remember watching Torvill and Dean and loving every minute of their performances because they changed the sport. I remember a controversy where they lost the gold medal because they were ‘separated’ from each other a second too long.
Mmm. I think they are way edgier than Torville & Dean. I found T&D boring.
I always remember the Canadian brother and sister who danced about the same time as T&D. They had to avoid the romantic stuff too, so did very lively and energetic stuff. A jungle number, a clown thing. It was much better than the polka stuff.
Agree with @intparent . Torvill & Dean clearly upped the ice dancing game a lot for artistry, but I have enjoyed watching Virtue & Moir the past x years a whole lot more. I’m still not certain why ice dancing is a “sport,” but V&M make it work supremely well as entertainment regardless.
I do spend way more time than I should – which is not a high bar: any time would qualify, and I spend even more than that – wondering if they are involved off the ice.
They should be. They have such great chemistry, and clearly really like each other.
A little rant about some Olympic commercials. The Subway ad gets on my nerve. Yup, the one showing young folks doing all sorts of Jackass-type activities (like playing golf with a lit up firecracker). It just screams “reckless idiots like our food, so if you want to join the club…” no thanks.
Some of the ads are really raucous – the one about Visa tapping is awful. My favorite is the Comcast Chilkook Cafe/Afton one.
Maybe I have too much hubris, but I really would not want that to be my legacy.
I actually think romantic involvement would make it more difficult for a skating team. Yes, I know the US also has a huband-wife pairs team, but I wondered about them, too. It’s hard spending all day, every day, working intensively with a romantic partner-- especially in competitive sport where the goal is perfection, and where mistakes and accidents during practice can be downright painful. And then to go home, absolutely exhausted, to spend the night with the equally exhausted partner? I suppose the main benefit is that competitive figure skaters probably don’t have time for romance with anyone else… but it would put a lot of extra pressures on the relationship. It’s why, in general, workplace romances tend to be discouraged.
My favorite is Ted-Jan Bloemen. He is essentially Dutch but was able to claim Canadian citizenship. (It’s not completely whacky because his father was born in Canada.) Anyway, apparently most Dutch ice speed skaters skate in professional teams. He made a team, but was cut --his contract was not renewed. He was told he just wasn’t good enough.
He took advantage of his dual citizenship and moved to Canada a couple of years ago and joined the Canadian National Team. He won a silvet medal and a gold in 10,000 meters, beating out the Dutch who came in second and third. It must have felt wonderful!!!
Is the trickless snowboarder the Eddie the Eagle of the 2018 Winter Olympics?
The US ice dancing team that finished 4th, Donohue and Hubble, used to date for several years, but eventually ended their romantic relationship and chose to remain dancing partners and friends.
Virtue and Moir have been very coy in discussing their off-ice relationship. This morning I heard Scott say in an interview, when asked if they’re dating, that he’s just glad that the audience assumes that because of what that says about their on-ice chemistry.
Time will tell, I expect, We can revive this thread if they eventually become a public couple.
The “Hungarian” snowboarder is a Harvard grad. Can’t believe that hasn’t been noted on CC.
Donohue and Hubble were also very steamy.
Actors do it all the time, of course, miming chemistry. Or having it, and letting it show, but not necessarily turning it into an off-stage/screen relationship. Except . . . actors seem not so great at avoiding that. And the time they spend pretending to be in love with one another is nothing compared to the nearly two decades Virtue and Moir have spent touching one another strenuously 20-30 hours/week.
They “retired” once before, after the last Olympics, for the better part of two years. They didn’t become a public couple then . . . nor I think did either of them become part of a public couple with anyone else.
Moir & Virtue practice like 13 hours/day. I can’t imagine the dedication that takes. She’s also had several surgeries so she can continue to skate and had to re-learn everything so she wouldn’t re-injure and could skate comfortably. That’s overcoming a lot of adversity.
I have to say I preferred the French couple, although Virtue and Moir were good too.
I would like to have everyone stop the practice of having the woman stand on the man’s thigh, with her skate, ouch!
LOL. I was wondering what sort of fabric the men used for those pants… I could use some in my war on blackberries.
