Here is something I’m disappointed in this Olympics. NBC, for all the hours of coverage (and replays) they have, are showing almost no medal ceremonies. And when you go to the website there are a few more, but they don’t show the anthem. I wanted to watch Virtue & Moir sing (and they do SING!) their national anthem when awarded their ice dance medals, and I’ve resorted to digging through YouTube videos to find it. The medal ceremony is on the NBC site (although focused more on the Shib sibs). But it cuts off after they get the medal and before the flag/anthem. I find this disappointing. It seems easier to cover than it used to be – all medals are awarded in the evening at one venue. You need ONE camera to get the whole day’s medal ceremonies, then just edit that into pieces. The medal ceremony and their reaction when their flag is raised & anthem played is the heart and soul of the Olympics, IMHO.
Tara Lipinski looks fabulous. Johnny Weir— I’ll listen to him, but his look is simply distracting.
Regarding the replay, they are endlessly replaying top stuff like skating on NBCSN for the next 24 hours after the event. I’ve seen more replays of the ice skating (like, 2-3 times replayed) than I care to.
Just heard the news about Diggins & Randall and I was so pleased, particularly after @intparent’s comments about what a nice person she was upthread. Hooray!!!
Are you surprised? Those are the same bozos who repeat the same big news over and over. Anything less than big is not mentioned. Surely, there’s some other events happening somewhere in the country that can fill the news hour instead of millionth repeats. But we don’t hear about them.
NBC is doing some silly bit with Honda and Savannah learning to ski. Glad to see, as silly as this bit is, that they are wearing helmets. Skiers should wear helmets. ALL skiers.
All downhill skiers.
“Many of these female skaters are so teeny tiny. Is that usually the case or more so this year? I don’t remember it from the past. Some of them look like little dolls out there.”
@doschicos, years ago we went to a skating exo in Lake Placid. We had special passes that allowed us to go back stage (it’s a NYS facility and was in H’s budget.) We met Kristi Yamaguchi and Tara (who was only 13 at the time, iirc.) I am only 5’1” and weighed maybe 100 lbs at the time and I looked like a giant next to Kristi. You could have fit three of her in one of me! Tara was teensy weensy, too. Paul Wiley was there too and he was also small.
I like both the (Australian?) woman who does the skating commentary when I watch on the computer, and Johnny Weir and Tara. I love seeing what get up Weir is sporting today. They actually aren’t on camera that long (much less I think than Hamilton was). I didn’t see the birds until I went looking at images a few days later. I agree Weir’s commentary is fine, very low key, not what you’d expect from the outfits!
I have watched a lot of cross country skiing and biathlon this year. After seeing Diggins finish 5th 2-3 times, it was great to see her win the first gold medal in cross country for the US ever. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see it live. Saw a replay of the exciting finish. Bravo to Diggins and Randall. Seems like US cross country skiing has come a long way.
At the rink I skate at (no, I’m not doing triple-triples) one of the coaches said if Hubble/Donohue want to place better, she needs to lose weight. I had to go back and look but come on! She looks strong and fit - nothing more. Lots of expectations to be strong without losing willowy-ness? When will that ever change… I love the Johnny and Tara commentary because it is detailed and spot on with the technical parts we wouldn’t necessarily have caught.
Great quarter-final win for Canada over Finland in hockey this morning! 1-0.
I prefer Tara and Johnny’s commentary to the analysts they’ve had in the past. Johnny, in particular, explains the nuances of skating and scoring, without alking down to the audience.
I also missed the last group of skaters last night because it’s just on too late on the east coast. Tonight I think the women’s hockey game starts at 11pm ET - I’ll have to get results tomorrow morning.
Yay to the US skiers!!!
intparent - did you watch it in real time? How exciting. Hope you did not wake up the neighbors with your excited yelling!
( Eons ago, baby kid woke us up with her blood curdling screams. No, she was not hurt. Nor there were any burglars in the house. She was watching the US men’s swim relay beat the French. )
Yes. And now am trying to stay awake at work. I, um, might have awakened my upstairs neighbor.
I loved Ivett Toth who skated to AC/DC in an appropriate costume. http://hvg.hu/sport/20180221_Felrobbant_a_net_attol_hogy_Toth_Ivett_ACDCre_korcsolyazott She squeaked into the final round.
I don’t know their names, but there was a pair either in pairs or dance where the female did not fit the mold of the average tiny skater. I think they were from Canada and she was built very solidly. Not fat at all, but very stocky. I would hope no one would be calling for her to lose weight.
Dancers don’t have to be as tiny, because there are fewer, lower lifts, fewer, lower jumps, and no throws. The women in pairs tend to be teeny-tiny.
Korea’s curling team are breakout stars. Their rural garlic farming hometown is going bananas.

Watched the women’s xc race. I knew who was going to win and still it was so exciting.
Kudos to the wax technicians, the Americans wax was amazing. They won that race in the downhills. I’m such a dork, I wonder if they switched to new skis between each leg. I would think that they do, unless it is against the rules.
