Olympics 2018

+1, @QuantMech!

^^Make that +2

Will we see Medvedev’a’s Sailor Moon at the exhibition? I would love to! She is amazing.

Apparently, Kaetlyn trains just 4 days a week… skating rink at some shopping center. Just wow.

I have actually never seen a performance where a skater missed a jump and added it later. Quick thinking for a 15 yo. Combine this with absolutely perfect short program and she is a winner.
Medvedeva had too much drama in her program for a young girl. And drama continued after the music stopped.

Local NBC station is showing the US-Canada game. Miracle on Ice 2.0.

Dang iPhone.

I don’t know if this is statistically true but … it seems like the US Women are pulling in a lot more medals than the men’s teams. Bobsled, cross country, skiing, speed skating, ice hockey. They are doing us proud

It’s not your imagination. I read the US women have many more medals than the guys.

The women’s hockey game was on this afternoon. During the overtime my mother needed a ride somewhere so I had to hit record. It was pretty good to watch the shootout hitting rewind a few times.

I find the differences in the female skaters approaches to their costumes very interesting and wonder if there’s some strategy involved in their selections. The two top Russians (not going to attempt their names) wore very gaudy costumes (in one case even with sparkly red gloves); most of the other women who skated tonight went for a more restrained, elegant look. I also noticed that most of the female skaters are quite pretty. How do you suppose that happens?. Are plain little girls somehow discouraged from engaging in competitive skating?

Here’s an opinion piece that argues that the wrong Russian won the gold. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2018/02/23/wrong-russian-won-gold-medal-womens-figure-skating-2018-winter-olympics/366111002/

I don’t know if anyone has read Christine Brennan’s columns on the Olympics. She’s been great imo.

The more traditional ballet-like tutu costumes are in some cases more appropriate than the very risqué, skin revealing ones. Maybe after the 2 costume malfunctions this year inthe ice dancing they will revisit this.

Kaetlyn trains with the Ice Palace Figure Skating Club which is probably one of the largest skating clubs in North America. They have an excellent staff of professional coaches and they train at several different rinks in Edmonton, including the ‘skating rink at some shopping center’. That shopping center is the West Edmonton Mall, the largest mall in North America, and is like a small city in itself, employing about 25,000 people. The rink there is a beautiful one. Training rinks, in general, are fairly simple, even for the most accomplished skaters.

She skated well last night. I’m happy for her and her family. She had a rough road back from a badly broken leg.

The tackiness of Russian skaters costumes is nothing new IMO. I’ve felt the same way during past Olympics.

MommaJ makes a good point about whether plain little girls are discouraged from competitive skating. I would not be surprised if that happened, even without conscious ill intent on the part of the coaches and judges. The assessments are still pretty subjective, even though part of the score is points-for-elements. The skater’s appearance may also affect the amount of positive feedback and number of helpful corrections from the coach. This is not good, really.

kang @jaycaspiankang tweeted shortly after the program ended: Medvedeva: I will take you on an emotional journey that ends with me getting hit by a train Zagitova: I’ll just do all my jumps in the last twenty seconds Bc they are worth more points then who cares about the journey I DEMAND JUSTICE

Zagitova’s warm-up seemed to me to have somewhat of a “ha, ha, ha, in your face” quality to it, particularly given that Medvedeva was competing after having a broken foot not so long ago.

I was actually surprised that there are multiple 15 year olds in the Winter Olympics. Is the requirement to be 16 only applicable in Women’s Gymnastics in the summer?

Also, I have seen skaters insert missed jumps later in the program before. I am sure Zagitova trains for that along with everything else. It is not as if she is taking 4 AP classes, volunteering at the local hospital, and presiding over Pie Club the rest of the time. Not impressed.

You can vote for Zagitova or Medvedeva at the USA Today Sports site, For the Win.

Google USA Today Sports Did judges get it right

So far, it is coming out about as I would expect, even taking poll participant bias into account.

There were several skaters last night who inserted missed parts of a combination jump later in their program. Watching the CBC commentators, this was mentioned several times, although I don’t remember which particular skaters did it. Kurt Browning and Carole Lane speculated when something was missed if the skater would add it back in later, and they often did. Did Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir not discuss this?

USA Today also offers “Tara Lipinski breaks down rivalry between Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova” in the “For the Win” section. Lipinski prefers Zagitova. Who could have predicted that?

She had last night while they were waiting for the point announcement who she thought won. She was right.

Hard to know what the skaters look like under all that makeup!! I used to marvel at the tabloid photos of actresses photographed without their makeup on. They. are sometimes hardly recognizable!

Yes, Tara and Johnny did discuss whether the skaters would insert their missed jumps later…every time. And even noted when it was happening.

Michael Chen added a sixth quad to his long program as well.

I think that’s true. I don’t think actual looks play into it as much as size, and, of course, talent.
