Having been a figure skater in my youth, I love that they can use music with lyrics. I think it brings a different kind of energy to the routines and the performances.
Watching the snowboarders makes me wonder if living with snow and cold (as I do) does something to people’s brains. Does it make us kind of wild and crazy?
Wowza!!! The 17 yr old snowboarding kid from CO got the first GOLD for Team USA!
A PSA for all Olympic parents: when your kid just had a great skate, take the gum out of your mouth - the cameras will be on you, too.
Scott and Tessa are as near to perfection as you can get. Wait til you see them skate to Moulin Rouge. Love them!
So sad the men’s downhill had to be postponed
I was really looking forward to Beat Feuz facing off against the Attacking Vikings
My hat is off to Carolina Kostner. Wow!!! 31 years old and still skating… don’t fall, please.
And she did not fall!! So beautiful.
The Russian skater is simply amazing. Hope she wins the ladies individual gold. She is in a class of her own.
Watching the pairs now.
The Italians were AMAZING!!!
Yes, they were!
On the other hand, I find it distracting when I’m watching figure skating. I tend to focus on the lyrics and miss the details of the performance.
But I also can’t listen to music with lyrics in the car because I find it so distracting that I can’t drive safely. In a world where people listen to podcasts (podcasts!) while commuting and still manage to reach their destination safely, I am possibly an outlier.
^^Not only podcasts but books!
I didn’t remember the Russian figure skater’s name, but they said she was the one who skated in the red coat at Sochi, and I remember that well.
@musicmom1215 If you’re talking about Evgenia Medvedeva, this is her Olympic debut at Pyeongchang. The ‘red coat’ skater at Sochi was Julia Lipnitskia, who is not participating this year. I think she may have retired from skating.
Go, Norwegian: falls down at the beginning, still wins the gold.
Since it was 30K, he had a chance to make up time. All Norwegians, all the time in that race.
Hey, he was born in Cleveland. Went snowboarding at the same place I first skied and I took my kids to ski for the first time. All of about 180 ft vertical drop I think so he definitely needed to up his game in terms of facilities.
He saved his best for last no doubt.
@saillakeerie lots of really awesome park skiers and riders come from the Midwest. It’s counterintuitive, but you don’t need a lot of hill to build a perfectly good park. Plus, the shorter hill means a shorter lift/poma/rope tow, which means more laps, more repetition, and more practice. Moving to CO/UT/CA/ID/etc. usually happens when they are performing at a level beyond what the local park crew can serve. A hill in Ohio with 180 vert just doesn’t have the resources to build a super pipe.
Lindsey Vonn started at a tiny ski area in a suburb just south of Minneapolis.
The weather looks wicked there. D1’s fiancé said he’d try Nordic skiing with us next winter, but now he is having second thoughts. D told him we’ll be inside drinking cocoa and playing board games if the wind is blowing like this!
Red Gerard has lived in Colorado since he was 7, so I’m not sure if he had outgrown the local hills. He has older siblings so maybe they wanted more.
