[This question has probably been answered on these boards already, but when I searched, I got a bunch of political threads. Apparently omega is a political word???]

Anyhow, I have been reading about the value of adding Omega 3 to one’s diet. For non-fish eaters like me, it is available in capsule form. There is a version made from fish, and a version made from flax, but the flax version is apparently not as effective.

I do not eat fish because I can’t stand it. I have to leave the room when it is cooking. I can’t stand the smell, the taste, etc. I have an immediate, visceral reaction. My fear from the capsules is that I will be able to taste it (burp?) which will then cause me to lose all potential benefits, so to speak…

Before I spend 10 bucks for a bottle of capsules, does anybody have any experience or advice?

My mom is allergic to fish/shellfish, so she is taking the capsules. She has the european version, much less expensive than what you can buy in the US. She has never complained about the after taste, does not take it with any special food/liquid etc. Both my kids are taking it now as well and neither of them voiced any complains. She has the version made from fish :)

Advice…freeze the capsules. They dissolve later in the digestive process. Less burping. Also, somewhere I read that there are some being marketed as less “burpy.”

I’ve had problems with fishy burps. I think it’s an individual thing. My h takes high quality caps and insists they don’t cause the burps - but they do for ME.
Anyway, I know take a product called Coromega. They come in packets, and it’s like orange flavored pudding - with a bit of an aftertaste. But they don’t make me burp -and supposedly the oil is absorbed at a higher rate. I keep the box on my office desk and grab one every morning. They’re available on Amazon if you’re interested.
BTW, you can get a free sample packet on their website.

I take 6 Vitaminshoppe capsules a day, which gives me precisely the DHA/EPA amounts that appear in the FDA-approved and tested prescription formulation Lovaza.

I take fish oil as does my ADHD son (along with his Adderall). No problems with it, one of the benefits that is noticeable to me is that my skin looks better when I keep up with the fish oil. I usually try to find a “buy one get one free” and buy the bottles in larger quantities to make them more affordable.

Super Fisol is ENTERIC coated, meaning it dissolves in your intestinal tract rather than your stomach so NO fish burps or aftertaste. Plus it is highly concentrated.
My 18 yr old daughter has been taking these twice a day for about 4 years now (to control Ulcerative Colitis).

I take 6, 1000 mg caps a day–whatever is on sale. Get a little fish burp once every few days but it’s just that–like I had salmon for lunch. Doctor’s orders. High Tri-g’s

Binx, I had no idea you feel that way about fish. I am the exact same way. I have to leave the house if DH bakes the crab cakes he buys at the grocery store.

I’ve been taking flax seed oil. It’s not high-calorie.

VeryHappy - It’s very nice to know there is someone out there besides me (and my daughter)!

I was concerned that flax seed and other vegetable sources are said to not be absorbed as well. A quick Google of a few different capsules show them running about 10 calories each (since there are 9 calories in a gram of fat, it makes sense that oil is going to have calories, regardless of the source.)

I went to the store to buy some capsules yesterday, and read the labels and saw all these fishy sources, and knew it was going to be a huge mind-over-matter issue just to get them down. And if they threatened to come back up, well… not good.

I didn’t want to spend money on flaxseed capsules if they weren’t going to do the job. So, in the meantime I bought some Voortman flaxseed cookies that say they have omega 3 in them. They are staying down very well. But I don’t imagine that is the best source long term.

Burp-less capsules would be the best, I think. If I can’t “stomach” them, I’ll feed them to my H.

I take medical-grade capsules from omegabrite.com. They have the amounts and proportions of fatty acids that have been used in the studies that showed the benefits. They are more expensive than drug-store or health-food-store capsules only on a per-capsule basis - if you compare amounts of active ingredients, they cost about the same.

No burps and no taste/aftertaste.

I should mention that I read recently that fish oil capsules tend to thin the blood, and should not be taken by certain people.
