Oregon+weak GPA= Acceptance?

Would being from Oregon make up for a weak GPA? I have 3.2 uw, but I got 4.0 in Junior year. I know its a freakishly high reach, but I may as well try anyways. Also I was born in VA, will they cancel out my OOS status because of that?

It does’t matter that you were born in VA, only where you live currently. (Or perhaps more accurately where your parents reside–that’s what’s used to determine residency.) About the only difference it might make is if one of your parents is an alumni of W&M–legacies do get some preference in admission.

Not sure that OOS residence will make up for a weak GPA–generally OOS residents have to have higher GPAs/test scores for admission than in state residents do. Virginia state universities are required by law to have no more than 30% of their enrollment drawn from OOS. Therefore all OOS applicants are competing for a relatively limited number of slots.

As for trying–who knows? It was a crazy year for admission this year. Next year promises not to be any different.

Man that 30% thing sucks! Oh well, at least there are plenty of other great universities besides W&M.

Many state university system cap OOS enrollment–North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin. South Carolina and Florida are considering limits. UConn imposes an OOS student cap even though the rest of CT’s public colleges don’t.

And it could be worse, most state have even lower limits than VA. For example, Illinois sets 10% cap on OOS. UIUC admitted fewer than 5% of its freshman from OOS this year.
