Orientation and First Impressions

We attended orientation last week with our D. She is our oldest, so this is all new for us. We are from the Northeast and UVA was probably the last place we expected her to attend. However, she fell in love with it and here we are. We were really impressed by the students, families, staff, facilities and the town. If her experience at UVA will be anything like our orientation experience, she should have a wonderful 4 years.

What really stood out for us were the students and families that UVA attracts. Coming from a competitive area in the Northeast, it is quite a culture shock for us. We expected to experience a bit of southern culture with people generally being nicer. We certainly got that from the Virginians. But what was really pleasantly surprising was that the students and families form the Northeast and other places in the country were just as pleasant to be around. It seems that the school attracts a certain type of student and family. People were just super nice…not something we are used to.

The orientation was well run and informative. Many of facilities are new or updated and the campus is beautiful. Charlottesville is a really nice town with great restaurants and live music.

I’m sure that over four years there will be bumps in the road, but so far UVA is very impressive.

I’m so glad you enjoyed your visit! I’m from NJ originally and went to school/worked in New England before arriving in Charlottesville in 2005. I’ve loved all of my homes, but Charlottesville is my favorite place. I even prefer Bodo’s Bagels to the ones at home now (gasp).

Welcome, welcome!

Wahoowa! My D is a first year in SEAS this fall and is attending orientation in a few weeks. I hope our daughters’ paths cross - I grew up in MA and we now live in NY. We absolutely love UVA and Charlottesville and have had similar experiences in our three visits to grounds over the past year. But if your daughter ever wants a touch of New England, there is Ben and Jerry’s up the road on Emmett St!

And the Harris Teeter makes a small batch of black and white cookies each day.

Bodos is surprisingly good. Not New York bagels, but definitely some of the best I have had outside NY.
