Orientation: trials and tribulations

DUN, dun, DUN

well I just got back from orientation session Q or whatever. The two sections CLAS, one section SEAS including Rodman scholars session. and it was, if nothing else, an experience.

So we got there and had to sit through an hour or so of pointless speeches. yyyeeeahhhhhh… then we divided up into groups of about 2 or so to play icebreakers. boo. Oh well, I met some people but I bailed on those after a few minutes to go talk to Dr. Pfister about some things. After that we had a little workshop about scheduling classes.

now remember I am seas, so by workshop I mean they handed us ou classes and said “here you go”. That was way lame. Then we went to the computer lab to look at the COD and ‘pick our classes.’ i at this point I was still thinking about transferring to CLAS, so I made two schedules, one for if I want to transfer and one for if I decide not to. After that was dinner and more icebreakers, and then a hall meting for out dorms (more icebreakers!!!) and then a pizza/hottub party at the AFC. I didn’t have my bathing suit, and there wasn’t anything else going on, so I just kind of went back to the dorm and watched Scrubs with some friends and people I met. Lame, but not much going on.

The next day I went to talk to Dr. Evans, who advised me much about degrees and such, then met with my real advisor (Dr. Elzy (sp?) who is really an awesome advisor) and we discussed my options. In the end, after much deliberation, I decided to change to the college, but still take ENGR 142R.

Anyways, signing up for classes was hell. I didn’t really get any of the electivesque courses I wanted, and I could not ind a 5th class that fit my schedule I was remotely interested in so I ended up with 4 classes (14 CH) and am going to try really hard to get some better classes when ISIS opens up. Looks like its time to start emailing profs. I ended up with Phys III, Apma diffq, ENGR 142R, Phil of science. Hopefully I will be able to add Probability or Econ 201, and replace the phil class I ended up with with something like Phil of reason. I dunno, well see.

anyways, Webb is going to be awesome and I am excited I’ll be living there, I’ve got major plans for the room now that i’ve seen whats really like knowing I’ll be there.

This has become more like a blog post than a thread, lol. I hope it was somewhat informative and please ask questions or make comments to this isn’t a pointless thread!

Ha, as a rising fourth-year who’s working at the AFC this summer, it’s crazy the incoming first-years walking around which gives me thoughts of my summer orientation three years ago…

Taking diffeq as a first year…Sounds like you have some math aptitude. I’m taking the noon section…

Dana Elzey is a god among men

E, will changing to the college affect Rodman status?

It would change his Rodman status to Echols since they are the same thing.

boundary hit the nail on the head. Dana Elzey is an amazing adviser, a great guy just to go talk to if you need some advice, and an all around fantastic human being. He flat laid out everything for me, my different options, what path I can take, how different degrees would look to employers, what I would learn in E school vs. the college, and much much more. He didn’t try to push me to stay in or get me out, he just gave me the facts and helped me come to my decision extremely well informed. If he isn’t your adviser and you need advice, by all means go talk to Elzey, he will really help you out.

Unfortunately yes, I am going to be losing my Rodman status at the end of the year when I transfer. Theres a good chance that I will get Echols when I transfer, but no more Rodman. I will still officially be one through the rest of this year though.

Ummmm…: haha, you were in the AFC? cool. I was impressed by the facility but couldn’t get in the hottub. boo.

If anyone noticed, I should say I was the one with the rubix cube on me at all times, wearing the Miles Davis tee shirt.

edited for bad grammers

double post, but more relevant info about how Orientation went down:

There was a cool session on the end of Day 1 where we got to go talk to some of the students on a cheesy ‘off the record’ manner. There were a lot of questions about drugs sex and alcohol, and streaking the lawn and such. It seemed like they spent a lot of time talking with us about Alcohol and how to stay safe, so it was very informative in that right. They spent a TON of time talking to the parents about drinking as well. I think they want the parents to understand that its college, so your kids going to be drinking, a very “yep, they will, get used to it, and we will do whats in our power to keep them safe.” Also good info on where to go if dealing with sexual harassment or other forms of discrimination.
