Orientation

Hello!

I am a high school senior, and I’ve been admitted to ASU for Fall 2011. Recently, I applied to Barrett, and I read that it takes 6-8 weeks to receive a decision letter, but my choices for orientations begin in March and their website says that the orientation days I have available are based upon my major (chemical engineering) and school, the school of engineering.

My question: should I wait for a decision from Barrett and then choose a date for orientation, and risk getting classes at the times I want them, or choose an early orientation date now?

I’m unsure of the effects of being admitted to Barrett on my choices for orientation, but I’ve read that Barrett advisers will be present at orientation which could be significant.

Choose a date in April (after that 8 week mark) and you’ll be just fine. You’re mostly only competing for classes with other freshman so you’ll still be ahead of the majority of the incoming class by then. Plus, you can always change your schedule online after orientation, so if anything is full you can keep checking to see if it opens up (which most of the time it will). Good luck!

hey Id say go for the earliest one you can get, it will still be based off of your engineering course and the barretts class you for sure need to take is The Human Event. This way you not only get your classes but the best times - most slots between 11-3 will fill up first, leaving the unlucky ones with the 8 am classes. Besides, you can always change your schedule after youve already got it secured and you can talk with barretts advisors on the phone/online, ASU has a good system for it.

^ If they are not accepted in Barrett before orientation, then they will not be able to sign up for any honors classes. I took multiple ones my first semester. Plus, you don’t get to go to the breakout sessions with the other honors students, which I found helpful. I’d say wait until April, and you’ll be fine.

Thank you very much! I was really worried about it, but you have alleviated that stress. Now just to get accepted to Barrett! :)

What happens in the breakout sessions?

I don’t know what breakout sessions are, so I can’t answer that. I didn’t actually go to a Barrett specific orientation, as I lived too far away, and so went to a general one in Chicago. I was already accepted into Barrett, and I think my orientation was in late April, and I got all the classes I wanted, no problem. So you might as well wait.

The breakout sessions have Barrett advisors and current students, and sometimes professors, and talk about the honors college, thesis process, class options, etc. It’s really just an introduction, and you’ll meet other students while you’re there, if they’re still doing it. I found it helpful.
