Oops! I did not see post #75. Cross post deleted.

CNN was just saying that Homeland Security had in place a protocol to institute heightened security in anticipation of retaliation upon Bin Ladin’s death at the hands of the US. I’m sure radicals will indeed seek revenge. We’ll just have to prove we possess the national will to outlast them all, no matter how many come. If they’re willing to fight to the last man, we’re willing to kill their last man.

I feel happy for both President Bush and President Obama. I wish them sleep well tonight.

The articles published a few days ago from Wikileaks are kind of scary… About how AlQaeda said they had a bomb they planned on using if Bin Laden was captured

To avoid the political tone, as we’ve been asked, how are your kids taking this? We were watching The Killing, oblivious to what was brewing, when S called to alert us that the President would be speaking and that the consensus on Twitter was that Bin Laden was dead. I then called D, at American U. in DC, who also hadn’t a clue. After the speech, D called to say the AU quad was filled with celebrating kids, (including some who were chanting “cancel finals”). She expects some serious hangovers at tomorrow’s finals. It appears those surrounding the White House are primarily GWU kids, who have just a short walk there.

I have to say I do feel a little disappointment that he wasn’t captured alive–but I suspect the plan was to kill him on sight, given the complexities of incarceration and trial. But it’s a shame he got off this easy.

Yep, posted a link a few pages back. No nuclear explosions in Europe, so it’s safe to say they were lying. If they had it, they wouldn’t let these celebrations continue.

I was hoping for a life sentence… general population in Rikers Island.

It came to the forefront before then - at least in my mind (but I’m not alone in this perspective). I remember the previous twin towers attack, the embassy attacks, the USS Cole attack - with much loss of life among Americans.

^ We are not afraid of them. As a matter of fact they are more afraid of us now. Pakistan will be no longer their home. Other countries will not let them act wildly.

Well said, poetsheart.

Apparently there was a ‘firefight’ which implies Osama’s side was defending itself and Osama ended up a casualty. That makes it unclear whether this was an attempt to capture him alive or not. We’ll need to wait for the details to understand what really happened assuming it comes out.

I don’t care. The verdict for him was written a long time ago. Why waste money to guard him and to try him again?

The more CNN describes the operations to accomplish this mission, the more impressed I am by our Navy Seals. They are indeed elite fighting men, and extremely brave. I’m so proud of them!

president obama always said his goal was to KILL bin-laden (not waste $$ in holding him somewhere). this was said repeatedly.

and yes, the seals are very impressive!!! always have been.

gotta go to bed and get ready for work. god bless america

I agree, coolweather. It’s best that he’s dead and rotting in hell.

“I agree, coolweather. It’s best that he’s dead and rotting in hell.”

What, no 72 virgins for him?

I agree, why waste any more taxpayer monies on that murdering nutcase.

…I don’t think this one needs to be politicized. We are all happy for Bin Ladens demise.

Forgive my ignorance of the military, but why is it a Navy force that does this sort of thing? Why not Delta Force, which, unless I mistaken, is part of the Army?

So Obama authorized the mission on Friday, then headed off to the White House Correspondents dinner Saturday night to make a funny speech while knowing all this was underway. What a strange life our presidents lead.

This means a lot to the United States, given the events of the past decade. However, it also means a lot to the world. The followers of bin Laden are the enemies of humanity.

God bless humanity, too.

“So Obama authorized the mission on Friday, then headed off to the White House Correspondents dinner Saturday night to make a funny speech while knowing all this was underway. What a strange life our presidents lead.”

That’s probably why he was in such a great mood. There was a possibility good things were happening soon!

I just saw footage of The President’s announcement, and he looks more rested and relaxed than I’ve seen him look in months. The Presidency, without exception ages it’s office holders terribly over a very short time. These instances of National victory are so few and far between. It must be a tremendous relief to have some unalloyed good news to deliver to the American people for a change.

CNN just showed footage from 2001 of President Bush invoking the old west poster in reference to Osama Bin Ladin just after 911: “Wanted, Dead or Alive.” I got a tickle out of that.:)
