Osama Bin Laden is dead?

Leaders all over the world are now sending the American people messages of congratulations and good will. From Israel, Austrailia, and others.

I received a PM from someone stating they heard the State Department was telling people to stay home tomorrow if at all possible. I can’t find anything alluding to reduced service at the airports on their websites (airline or airport). Can anyone confirm whether or not there’s any validity to this?

Thanks.

Teriwitt, who are the State Dept. supposedly advising to stay home tomorrow? Anyone thinking of flying or traveling abroad? The American people in general? CNN isn’t mentioning anything of the sort.

teriwtt…it seems that the information sent to you has morphed from what I have read.

I have only read about alerts for Americans overseas to this effect (and not to people residing in the US):

Message sent to me says State Department says everyone should stay at home tomorrow if at all possible. Airports will basically be a nightmare, too.

But I can’t find anything doing a google search.

Yea, soozie; that’s what I found. Seems to be directed more at people living/traveling abroad.

We are giving an extra hour more than our usual arrival time prior to departure. So I’d better get some sleep now! Will check this in the morning.

Teriwitt, here’s wishing you safe and uneventful travel tomorrow. God Bless!

okay this actually isn’t a good thing. 5 days ago al-Qaida publicized that if bin Ladin was captred, let alone killed would launch a nuclear hellstorm
sooooo fol

And yet… Nothing. It was a bluff; if they had one planted in Europe like they said, they wouldn’t tolerate these celebrations.

Re: college students getting the news. When DH texted DD right before the President’s speech, her reply was, “So they were not kidding?” Boy, those suburban Boston girls get the breaking news fast.

The Navy SEALs are an elite unit. SEAL Team 6 is one of the most elite anti-terror units in the world. Delta Force is the Army Special Forces team that is also a very elite anti-terror unit. I would imagine these two teams work side by side on many of their missions. Often these teams are flown in by the 160th SOAR unit which is a specialized aviation unit based out of Ft. Campbell, KY.

When you add it all up, these teams are the BEST OF THE BEST.

This is an interesting point. Imagine having to make such a significant decision, one that’s almost certainly going to result in the deaths of several people, then having to carry on as normal for the next ~48 hours so that nobody knows what’s happening before you finally learn of the result.

It also makes you wonder what would’ve happened if Obama had been scheduled to attend the Royal Wedding.

Here’s a shot of Obama’s face at the dinner right after Seth Meyers cracked a joke about Osama Bin Laden: [Look at Obama’s Face When Seth Meyers Made the Joke About Bin Laden Last Night](Loading...)

Interesting how our kids reacted to this…our 16 y/o S woke us up at 11 PM to tell us the news, and wanted to stay up to watch Obama’s speech. D texted us at midnight (ouch!) to ask if we were bringing out the champagne. My husband and I had a more measured response, recognizing that while very important symbolically, terrorism will not disappear with the death of Bin Ladin. However, to our kids–for whom 9/11 shaped their childhood (we’re in Washington DC area and all of us picked our kids up from school as soon as we heard the news–some of their classmates at parents working at the Pentagon), this had greater impact.

They’re planning a burial at sea within 24 hours in accordance with islamic law. That way, no shrine…

This islamic law is a new one for me…must be awfully hard for all the burials of the people of Afghanistan and other landlocked countries.

Our S, home from college for a funeral this past weekend, put out the flag, reminding me of where he was on 9/11. While doing sit-ups during PE on the playground at school, he saw the sudden cloud of black smoke in the sky as the plane hit the Pentagon. He was 11, and this week he turns 21–a political science major who is thinking of a Foreign Service career someday. So like Mom0f3, though I was surprised at first by his exhilaration last night, it makes perfect sense. Intellectually, he understands the symbolism of this event and knows that terrorism is still with us. Emotionally, he is remembering those who died on that blue-sky fall day when he was just beginning sixth grade.

Sorry, I’m late to this news. Do we know how many, if any, Americans were killed or injured in this mission?

At my son’s college, they have a tradition of “rolling the quad” after a huge sports victory. (i.e., TP all the trees) According to Son’s fb page, he was heading out to do that around midnight. Don’t know if they actually did it, though. I assume photos will show up if they did.

Like someone said upthread, I feel uncomfortable being glad about someone’s death. But, glad I am.

Just made it through security at Newark in record time. H says it’s because Newark’s security is set up more efficiently than other airports we typically go through. Oh well, worry for nothing.

No U.S. casualties. A U.S. helicopter did go down but no one was seriously injured.
