Oscar movies to watch

Loved “True Grit” and “The King’s Speech,” but “Winter’s Bone” was very special. It’s the one movie of the three that I still find myself thinking about - and that says a lot, since I really really liked the first two.

I too loved, loved, loved the King’s Speech. It’s the only one of the Oscar movies I have seen or intend to see. Actually, I’m dragging H back to see it tonight. Now that I’ve see all the on-line interviews with the actors and director, I want to go back and catch all the details I missed the first time.

I guess I’m joining the consensus - I loved The King’s Speech (saw it twice). Also liked True Grit and Black Swan (although watching the sex scene with my kids was a little uncomfortable). Thought The Social Network was Ok - interesting but not particularly Oscar worthy, IMO. Haven’t seen Winter’s Bone, but have heard great things about it and also the book. Want to see The Kid’s Are Alright - maybe this weekend.

Just watched Winter Bone online. It is a bit intense for me, didn’t leave me happy. I saw the Black Swan at a movie theater. It’s another thumbs down for me, uncessarily dark. I guess I like happier movies.

I am going to go down you guys’ list and try to watch some of them this weekend.

Just found The Social Network, hope this one is happier.

Not really. A very interesting, but not a happy, movie.

I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t happy. I need a happy movie now. I am off for next few days.

You know, it’s really hard to find a happy movie around Oscar time! How do you feel about exciting movies that aren’t complete downers instead? I liked “The Town” with Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner (amazing actor). Violent but the ending isn’t going to plunge you into despair. Nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Other recent shoot-em-up (but also funny, unlike “The Town”) movies: “Red” with Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and Helen Mirren; “The A Team” with Liam Neeson. No nominations for these, though.

There was no graphic lesbian sex in the Kids Are All Right. Unless being under a blanket counts as graphic. It was an OK movie. Not wonderful.

Personally, I think there was a lot more graphic sex in movies in the 1970’s than there is now.

I happened to love the Black Swan, and would be very surprised if Natalie Portman didn’t win Best Actress.

I also loved The King’s Speech (Colin Firth for the win), and liked True Grit a lot too.

I’d like to see Winter’s Bone.

When I was young, I probably used to go to 50 movies a year. Before J. was born, my ex and I used to go all the time. And when J. was in high school, he and I went to a great many movies together. But since he’s been in college, I haven’t been able to get used to the idea of seeing movies by myself again, so I never do. I wait until J. is home on vacation. I’m lucky if I see a half dozen movies a year at this point. (Kind of like eating in restaurants by myself – something I did all the time before I was married, but can’t bring myself to do anymore. So I don’t.)

Want to see the King’s Speech but will wait till available on Red Box - Lots of friends loved it. Love all the actors in it.

Glad I saw Black Swan - it is dark and it’s not the kind of movie I want to see over and over again, but it was a good film. Portman was great and although the sex was more graphic than I care for, it was a necessary element to show her decline. Our teens and their friends liked it more than the Social Network (I will watch soon).

I thought the Kids are Alright was pitiful, probably because I was expecting a comedy (anyone else out there with me?) When it was nominated for a Golden Globe for best Comedy or Musical, I thought - WHAT? The acting was good but nothing about it seemed that original.

I hear all of you raving about WInter’s Bone so I’ll check that one out.

H loved True Grit and I really enjoyed The Fighter. (Although, Marky Mark could just stand on the screen for two hours and I’d be happy.) The Fighter is way more about family than boxing, so don’t let that stop anyone from going. Bale and Leo were amazing. And did you not love the Guess denim mini-skirts? I remember mine…

I would be fine going to the movies alone, just don’t have enough opportunities.

I mentioned watching a movie during superbowl time tonight and a friend offered to lend me “The Social Network”, so that’s what I’ll be watching.

I go to movies with women friends, D, and sometimes by myself. H and I don’t have the same taste in movies at all.

Don’t forget “Toy Story 3.” That was the best of the bunch. I loved “The King’s Speech.” I thought “The Black Swan” was silly and I didn’t even think Natalie Portman was all that great. I think she had the same look on her face for 3/4s of the movie. Oscars like people who lose weight/gain weight and train hard for a role though. The problem with the movie was Aronofsky. “The Black Swan” was Mickey Rourke in a tutu.

Loved The Social Network so much that H and I watched it for a second time when it arrived on DVD–a really rare event. We were disappointed that Secretariat didn’t get any nominations. It’s a really good movie and story, even though you already know the ending! It might even almost qualify as a happy movie…certainly uplifting.

Cartera45, I agree about Black Swan. Mickey Rourke in a tutu…LOL.

Black Swan in my opinion, though dark was a very well crafted movie, Artsy in nature, which historically does not get too many oscars. Natalie Portman was superb and stretched herself. It’s the type of movie that one can watch several times and come away with more clarity and something different. Incidentally, the film students at my D school feel artistically that it is the perfect movie. Whatever that means. certainly not a feel good movie.
True Grit was spectacular. Jeff Bridges was fantastic as was the young actress. She actually made the movie. Remakes don’t get too many awards if I remember correctly, I could be wrong.
Kings Speech was excellent as well, a cute story, but predictable, I don’t think Academy Awards caliber. the costumes were great, acting was excellent.

Surprisingly I saw more movies than unusually do this year. We wait til it come out on Netflix, but H and I spent time at the movies and really enjoyed the few that we saw.

I haven’t been able to find Kings Speech on the internet. I would like to see it, maybe I should splurge and see it in a theater. It sounds like most liked the movie.

Oldfort, it is so worth it. It comes as near to being a perfect movie as I’ve seen. Nothing seemed out of place, and Colin Firth’s performance was masterful. And all the others were excellent as well, but he had the toughest job.

" Mickey Rourke in a tutu "

that is funny…when my daughter an I left Blackswan the other day, I commented that Barbara Hershey must have been to the same plastic surgeon as Mickey Rourke…she looks terrible

I think Barbara Hershey could have been used better in that movie though. The scenes with her in which you didn’t know whether you were going to see supportive mommy or Mommy Dearest had real tension in them. Had she had a better, more fleshed out role, it could have really been a scary movie. I would love to re-write that script.

Hands down “The Black Swan” the best this year among the nominees.
