Oscars 2019

Now I want to see some of these movies, but fear they are out of the theatres. Definitely like to see BlacKKKlansman and Green Book. Don’t think I can stand to watch Free Solo (I do indoor rock climbing, and it might be stressful). Thought the director for Free Solo was going to thank everyone but the star of the show, Alex, who was standing right up there…she finally gave him a nod.

I didn’t miss a host for the show one bit. Hope other award shows will follow suit.

@busdriver11

"Vasarhelyi also thanked McCandless: “You climbed your own mountain that day. So thank you, Sanni. This film would be so boring without you.”

I was shocked Alex wasn’t thanked first, and when she said Sanni ( girlfriend ) provided the "drama " or the movie would have been boring - I was stunned - I hope I didn’t hear that right.
Alex, who risked his life, allowed that movie crew to film, deserved more recognition ! Ugh

Read through all of the comments. I quit watching because of the sound dynamics. The music played at such a loud volume whenever it came on that it was hard to hear the voice commenting on who was going to present or facts about things. It seemed like in both the pre Oscar show and the Oscars someone had the volume up higher for the music and turned down lower than in past years for any voice commentary during music. Needed higher volume to hear the spoken parts then blasted with music. One reason we rarely choose to see any movie in a theater is that the volume is far too loud- no way to get away from the speakers. We certainly have not lost our hearing!

I do not intend to see the movies- none seemed spectacular (and last year’s winner- La La Land seemed self glorification for the industry, unlike musicals of years past). In past years we have caught some winners via TV but were not impressed.

No host- made it more about the awards. Some hosts were the reason for sitting through the whole thing. This year couldn’t catch names of presenters far too often.

La La Land was the mix-up, last year, not the winner.

We don’t watch because it’s the be all and end all, some great intellectual, artistic or emotional experience. We watch because it’s ‘popular culture.’ A couple of hours of pretty gowns and so on. Fine by me.

I don’t care if they had a host or not. But sorry to say, I think many of us are not interested in all the awards being presented on one show. (For a while, the tech and other ancillary awards were split into a different evening.)

wis75, Moonlight was the winner, after the correction but I believe that was 2 years ago.

Re: Oscar fashion. Crazy Rich Asians stars stole the show when it came to best red carpet looks

“Now I want to see some of these movies, but fear they are out of the theatres. Definitely like to see BlacKKKlansman and Green Book”

They are both available for purchase on amazon for less than it cost to see in the theater.

Loved JLo’s dress. Surprised that Glenn didn’t win, but I’m holding my opinion if she should or not until after I see The Favourite. I didn’t like her dress at all, although it was interesting.

I’m always interested in the reasoning by the Best Picture award. I think there is tons of politics going in behind the scenes, which is shameful. Think Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan 20 years ago.

@conmoma, it is holistic voting. Legacy, EC’s (whose ass you kissed) and first generation (Academy tired of giving the awards to the same ole bunch). Duh. =D> :-S

2 words - Harvey Weinstein

Of course, that does not explain other fiascoes, e.g. Crash over Brokeback Mountain or Driving Miss Daisy over My Left Foot.

@SouthJerseyChessMom I didn’t understand the speech either. I think Alex should have been included in the Free Solo thank you speech. Without him, there would be no movie. We saw it when it first came out in Imax and it was incredible what he did.

Conmama- I am still bitter about that ! That might be the biggest Oscar “crime” to date! I have to disagree about J Lo’s dress however - just so typical for her and Alex Rodriguez looked like a waiter!

One of the directors eventually did acknowledge him briefly. I didn’t know what he looked like before this, but when I saw him go up to the stage, I figured it must be him, because he has the muscular but thin build of a serious climber. When he stood away from the mike and wasn’t acknowledged, I figured that I must have been wrong about it being Alex. Especially after the director started out talking about the excitement of hiring women and minorities, and thanked his girlfriend first. I thought for a second that maybe I was mistaken about what documentary this was.

“I was shocked Alex wasn’t thanked first, …Alex, who risked his life, allowed that movie crew to film, deserved more recognition ! Ugh”

Well, at least he got some recognition. Recall that when Julia Roberts won the Oscar for “Erin Brockovich” she thanked everybody in sight except the actual Erin Brockovich…

“Think Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan 20 years ago.”

“2 words - Harvey Weinstein”

Nope. Sorry but I agree with William Goldman that SPR was for the most part a shockingly bad movie. Many in the academy agreed with Goldman’s assessment with reaction being “ he said what I was thinking.”

SiL delightedmost people. Sometimes when one is running from a movie like SPR that’s enough.

@123txmom for clarification as the camera pulled back and music started playing these words were said by the wife-

"The couple thanked their team, saying, “It was a work of an army, and we appreciate you in every way. Thank you, Alex Honnold, for giving us courage, teaching us to believe in the impossible, and inspiring us.”

I find it appalling because one of the moral issues, ethical issues about filing this climb. Jimmy Chin cried ( for relief) when Alex ascended. To say the movie would have been boring without Sanni, girlfriend is insane.

Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Saving Private Ryan a 93 and Shakespere In Love a 92 so, from their perspective, kind of a dead heat. Hard to compare apples and oranges…

The Award for best picture is decided by a preferential ballot, The winner has to receive over 50% of the votes,
For example if you voted for Vice as number one then Blackklansman as 2, when vice is eliminated (if it got the lowest number of votes) your number 2 vote now goes to your number 1 vote.
It’s highly likely that Green Book as best picture was the safe choice but not the first choice by voters.

Too late to edit but the audience gave SPR a 95 while SIL only got an 80, which could explain why some of you were disappointed that SIL won for Best Picture.
