OSU getting harder

I’ve heard recently that OSU is getting harder to get into. I’m nervous, because I’m applying to OSU, and thought that I would get in.

Is OSU still a safety for me? Though I am looking at some LAC out of state, I know OSU is great academically and is a great deal financially. Can someone explain rolling admissions? If I send my app in September, when will I know if I got into OSU?

One of Ohio’s top public schools

SAT IIs 800 US History 720 Chemistry

200 hours volunteering at historical society
a few other ECs

These are Ivy stats.

Okay. So? I’m still applying to OSU. Does have OSU numbers based admission or holistic?

Can someone explain OSU rolling admissions?

You seem like a perfect candidate for Honors Program!!

G’Luck! :)

Rolling admissions means that, once your application is complete, the review process begins and you will have an answer within 10-12 weeks and not before 12/1. Here’s the info from their website:

Once we receive your application
•Within two weeks, you will receive acknowledgment that your application form was received. You will be given an OSU ID and instructions for monitoring the status of your application.
•Within approximately 10 to 12 weeks (and not before December for those applying to begin in summer or fall quarters), your online application status will reflect one of the following admissions decisions:

◦Admit — Congratulations! You have been admitted to Ohio State. A notice about enrollment requirements and information about specific college enrollment are on the way.

◦Defer — After an initial review of your application, we have not yet made a final admissions decision. Following the application deadline, deferred applications will be reviewed a second time, giving particular consideration to academic performance, the competitiveness of the applicant pool, and the number of spaces available.

◦Options for Ohio Residents — At this time, you do not meet admission requirements for the Columbus campus. As an Ohio resident, your options are to enroll at one of Ohio State’s regional campuses or to apply again later as a transfer student from another college or university.

◦Denial for Nonresidents — At this time, you do not meet our admission requirements. You may wish to improve your academic profile at another college or university, then apply again as a transfer student.

Thank you very much. I will try to get my OSU app in as soon as possible so I know in early winter. I looked at the Honors program and it is very appealing. I read on the website about Honors and it doesn’t appear to me that there is any extra application. Is that correct?

Honors applicationis submitted after you are admitted. You will receive a separate mailing from admissions. Good luckand congratulations on such an outstanding record.

Thanks, BLDESQ. I’ll try hard to get in first, and then hope I get the mailing for the honors application!

Your in without a doubt. And id say 99% chance of honors college

you don’t apply for honors they invite you. you apply for scholars. i will be a freshman this fall in honors and my numbers weren’t quite as good as yours so you’re def in

With your grades and SAT scores I bet you will also receive merit scholarships. Be sure to apply early since those scholarships have an early admission application deadline. Good luck.

Don’t send signals like this if you really want to go to OSU. There are thousands of applicants now with high stats.

You will get into your LACs mostly likely, too. Yes, OSU is still a ‘safety’ for you.

I’m not a fan of considering something a “safety” but yes, I’d say you’re 99% in at OSU. Just never be cocky about it in your app (there is a brief essay).

As for honors, you will be automatically “invited” to join based on your SAT/ACT, GPA, and/or rank - BUT BE SURE TO ACCEPT THE INVITATION by the date they tell you (you just have to confirm online sometime in April) - I almost forgot to do that last year :)

I’m an incoming honors business freshman (class of '14) and had these stats:

SAT: 2160
SAT II’s: Math II=700 / Chem=760 / US History=740
ACT: 31
AP’s: five 5’s, and two 4’s
Rank: 3/200ish
School: Private, College-prep
EC’s: Unique experiences & lots of meaningful leadership w/ tangible results

Just a bit of advice from someone who was in your shoes a year ago: KEEP AN OPEN MIND and START YOUR SEARCH/APPS EARLY. I was dead-set on going to a top-tier school w/ a strong undergrad biz program. I was accepted to all my “top” schools (Georgetown, Boston College honors, and NYU) except Penn (rejected at Wharton RD). OSU was my “safety” yet fast forward to the present and I’ll be starting classes at OSU in a month. You just never know where life will take you…

Also, NEVER be blinded by prestige - it’s useless at the undergrad level (hence my decision to turn down all my acceptances at supposedly “great” schools).

Best of luck with your applications/decision… but I really do hope you choose to be a Buckeye - OSU is just such an amazing school - it offers almost anything you could want :)

Thanks everyone for the replies. I’m getting really nervous about tOSU application. I mean, I know that I have good stats, I just REALLY don’t want to be rejected! Though I’d prefer to be at a liberal arts college, if I don’t get in or can’t attend for financial reasons, I really want to go to tOSU! It has great political science programs and I would get a really good education there. Now I feel like tOSU is a match/likely rather than a safety. Eek. I definitely need a safety. I’m submitting my application today so that I’ll know whether I got in by December.

Here’s the irony. OSU is virtually a certain admit, with an honors invite and substantial merit aid–if you convey to them that they truly are in the running.

If Ohio State feels that you are viewing it as nothing more than a low safety, they very well might reject you for yield/acceptance rate considerations.

How do I convey that I really want to go?

I can see the possibility of getting rejected from the LACs I’m applying to, so I’d say there’s a good chance I’ll go to tOSU. Even if I do get in, I still really like tOSU. Lately I really have been considering law school and politics, and I know tOSU would really help me. I’m going to visit - do they take visits into account? Since tOSU isn’t the safety I thought it was, do you suggest something else?

Making an official visit/tour, talking to the honors and scholars office and conveying your seriousness in your essay will be more than enough.

What might set off their spidey senses is just getting a blind app from someone with your stats and no other contact–particularly since you’re in-state and a visit is not a huge geographic difficulty.

I don’t think you need to apply to another safety. Like I said, if you make a decent effort to show Ohio State they are a serious option (don’t even have to be at the top of your list), you’re certainly going to get accepted. After all, it is part of their job to convince students like you to matriculate. Even if Ohio State is not at the top of your list, they’ll definitely woo you if they think they have a fighting chance.

Thanks, LennyPepperidge. I’ll be sure to do that. I freaked out today, because I thought that I was going to get rejected from Ohio State. I’m working really hard on the essay. Do you think it’s okay if I focus on my academic for going to Ohio State rather than school spirit/social scene?

Ohio State is about three hours from where I live, so I can’t visit multiple times. I have already had contact with Ohio State.
