Our responsibility as parents

Here’s the female US population-- http://www.cdc.gov/women/lcod/06_API_females.pdf</a> they unfortunately suicide at a younger age, with rates in the 15-19 and 20-24 age group at 14.8 and 16.8% respectively, again just below unintentional deaths. So tragic.

JYM, the reason for death has nothing to do with the rate of the reason.

hey wait IP-OP
I wasn’t talking about you or “us” but “them” on that your bold font-ed my quote.
thou I do take offense on Starbucks/art history.
who knows, s/he could talk up with bigshot patron or an artist and get lucky make pile of money and live life even you might envy.
someone got to be barista or waiter. haven’t you ever eat or drink stuff made or served by someone else?
I know it is useless to argue about art-art issue here but no one who work and earn honest money to support what they wanna do eventually shouldn’t be looked down.

and PG
be careful, your friend Mr. Pink didn’t do thru research before he wrote that book.
and your publicly proven (fill in the blank)-ness might as well affect pizzason’s poll.
maybe wanna stop using Asian/ tiger mom ref. you do understand that it was her self deprecating humor = supposed to be funny book, yes?
if you read the entire book and didn’t get that, I do have to agree IP on some degree. or, there really is something wrong about Asian sense of humor.

I think art history is like aspirin at the turn of the 19th century. It cures all ills. A little bit of art history and you will be pricing bonds far better.

No math challenges, IP. read the data. Second highest case of death in these population age groups is suicide. Read Robyrm’s posts about Cornell as well. So sad.

Here is the title and caption from one of those tables:

"Leading Causes of Death by Age Group, Asian or Pacific Islander Males-United States, 2006*

*Percentages represent total deaths in the age group due to the cause indicated. Numbers in parentheses indicate tied rankings. The white, black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Asian/Pacific Islander race

JYM. The rate of teen Asian suicides have nothing to do with the leading causes of death for teen Asians. You are making a math error. The rate of teen Asian suicides is calculated as the number of teen Asians who committed suicide divided by the number of teen Asians. The share of suicide as one of the leading causes of death for teen Asians is calculated as the number of teen Asians who committed suicide divided by the number of teen Asians who died for any reason. Two totally different measures.

Let’s say there are 100,000 Asian teens in this country. Let’s say 20 of them die in a given year from all causes combined. Let’s say 6 of those deaths are from suicides.

Then, the teen suicide rate is 6 out of 100,000, but the cause of death share for suicide is 6 out of 20. The topic of discussion here is whether the 6 out of 100,000 rate is high by US standards. Actually, it is not. It is one of the lowest.

However, you have latched on to the fact that 6 out of 20 is a big percentage. That is neither here nor there. It just shows that Asian teens are not really dying at a high rate in the first place. Not a surprise, as Asians are a model minority.

Hope that helps.

Just keeping it real, and a bit more recent: [NAMI | Asian American Teenage Girls*Have Highest Rates of Depression](http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=press_room&template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=115681)

From the National Alliance of Mental Illness

Asian American Teenage Girls Have Highest Rates of Depression; NAMI Releases Report

Arlington, Va. – Asian American teenage girls have the highest rate of depressive symptoms of any racial, ethnic or gender group according to a report released today by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

The report is based on a “listening session” with mental health experts from different Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities held in Los Angeles in November 2010.

Key issues in the report include barriers to mental health services and negative perceptions of mental health problems particular to AAPI communities.

The report highlights statistics from the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) and National Asian Women’s Health Organization (NAWHO) posing concern.

Asian American girls have the highest rates of depressive symptoms of any racial/ethnic or gender group;
Young Asian American women ages 15 to 24 die from suicide at a higher rate than other racial/ethnic groups;
Suicide is the fifth leading cause of death among Asian Americans overall, compared to the ninth leading cause of death for white Americans;
Older Asian American women have the highest suicide rate of all women over 65;

Thank you for the current data, Robyrm. Truly tragic.

Dont spin the data, IP. The rate of suicide in those populations is frighteningly high, whether some want to believe it or not.

We first tried looking up the suicide rate of Asian teens. Didn’t work, too low. So we dropped it.

Then we tried looking up the depression rate for Asian teens. Didn’t work either. So we dropped it.

Then we cherry picked some more, and finally hit pay dirt. The depression rate for female Asian teens is apparently high based on a “listening session” with therapists. (Which means it is not really a study, it’s just asking people to ballpark estimates).

Now we are getting somewhere. The suicide rates of Asian teens must be high therefore.

(We also tried tying in the suicides of 3 Cornell students as representative of all Asian teens, but that was in general hokey so we got nowhere with that.)

Feel free to send your complaints to the CDC and NAMI. The data that were off kilter, irrelevant or outdated were not ours, IP.
Have a nice day.

That’s okay, IP. I learned Math at MIT from Professor Thomas et al. No problem for me in interpreting these inferences. Sorry it is hard for you. Will stop trying to alert you to a major mental health concern among a subset of children (oops products) about whom you are obviously so concerned.

[NIMH · Suicide in the U.S.: Statistics and Prevention](<a href=“Statistics - National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)”>Statistics - National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH))

The above data must be wrong, eh, JYM?

Look, I am not surprised that the suicide rate among Asians is going up. As the Asian community assimilates more and becomes more like non-Asians, the suicide rates will converge as well. The suicide rate for non-Hispanic Whites is sky high, double the current Asian rate. The Asian rate will keep increasing over couple generations till it matches the non-Hispanic White rate. That’s hardly surprising.

IP is right on the CDC Leading cause of death argument. That table just describes the percentages of the various causes of death - not the actual rates. Unintentional injuries account for a much lower percentage of leading cause of death in the Asian/Pacific islander females 20-24 (29.2% vs 45.9% for whites), so it would follow that the percentage of suicide as a cause of death in the Asian group would be higher. In fact, cancer and homicide as a percentage of the cause of death is higher too.
So although it may say something about the risk-adversity in these two groups, this particular piece of data doesn’t tell us anything about suicide rate of either group.

Being a plumber could be one of the best jobs in the future. Globalization could eliminate local jobs such as doctors, layers, IT people, teachers, etc, but not plumbers. Being a plumber part-time, philosophizing, painting, googling, traveling, inventing or whatever other times is attractive.

It absolutely does. Asians are risk averse. That’s a cultural trait that should not be a surprise. It shows in every single facet of the Asian parenting style. But that will change as more and more Asian generations get assimilated. The suicide rate will rise, and the rate of suicides as leading causes of death will drop. It may be counter-intuitive, but it will merge with the overall population.
