Out-of-State college options (for my girlfriend)

So here’s the deal: I am a midshipmen, currently going through college in Maryland and upon graduation I will receive a commission to become an officer in the Navy. I will then be moving to Pensacola for flight school. My girlfriend lives in Arizona, and is planning to move in with me, but wants to know what her options are as far as getting her education in Florida. Mainly, I would like to know what her best options are, and what we can do to minimize out-of-state tuition fees for her as much as possible. If anyone has any advice as to how to go about this, I would greatly appreciate. She is interested in getting an undergraduate medical degree, so if anyone knows what schools near Pensacola are best for that, that would also be helpful.

Pensacola is a great town

First, the University of West Florida (one of Florida’s 4 year public universities) is in Pensacola.

Use the true cost calculator on this site and review the scholarships that may be available.

Next, Florida has a strong system of community colleges. The CC’s also have a transfer agreement with the 4 year public Universities (UF, FSU, UWF, UCF, USF, etc).

Pensacola State College

Out of State Tuition is $19K/year at UWF and $10K/year at PSC. Before any scholarship.

A final option is to take 12 months off to establish in-state residence. Then the cost would be in-state ($6k/year at UWF and $2k/year at PSC). Without any scholarships, that may be the best option.

As a pre-med, either of these schools would work. If she takes a gap year, she should look for something medical related, as that would look great as an EC when applying to med school (and it would also let her know if that’s really the path she wishes to follow).

Good Luck!
