Outside Scholarships

If a student not receiving financial aid from the University receives outside scholarships, does the money go to the student? Is it applied to tuition or room and board? I know students who do receive financial aid might see reductions in their loans, but what about those of us who are attending without aid?

I’m asking because I won a scholarship recently, and the organization will send the money to the college I choose to attend and not to me directly.

I think it all depends on who is providing the scholarship. Of the external scholarships I have received, 1/3 is payed directly to the college. The organization told me that they instruct the college to deposit it into my student account, and it will go towards tuition, room and board, etc. The other two are payed directly to me, but they are to pay for educational expenses and the organization relies on your integrity to use it to pay for tuition.
