OVERLAP SCHOOLS as compiled by the Fiske Guide To Colleges 2020 Edition

It seems as though, despite the general high opinion of the school (and the 5 pens), no one seems to think of Haverford as an overlap (not just the Ivies either). That seems so strange to me.

Haverford College overlaps = Swarthmore, Hamilton, Davidson, Middlebury, Carleton, Wesleyan, Bowdoin & Amherst.

Haverford College received:

5 Pens for Academics

3 Telephones for Social Life

5 Stars for Quality of Life

I think Haverford is a quintessential LAC.

Boston College overlaps:

Harvard, Boston University, UPenn, Univ. of Virginia, Northeastern (Boston), Notre Dame, Villanova, & Georgetown.

Quote: “About 70 percent of students are Catholic, compared to 50 percent at Georgetown and 80 percent at Notre Dame.”

“Boston University is the archrival when it comes to ice hockey.”

“Boston is the college town of all college towns.”

“Students in the Undergraduate Faculty Research Fellows Program spend 100 hours per semester assisting faculty with serious research.”

Received ratings of:

4 Pens for Academics

4 Telephones for Social Life

3 Stars for Quality of Life

Strong programs:

Biology, Communications, Economics, Finance, Nursing, English, Physics, & Theology.

@milgymfam When my D was looking at LACs, she considered Swarthmore and Bryn Mawr, but was put off by Haverford’s honor code. There was lots of cheating and sabotage at her high school and she believed Haverford would be more of the same.

Yes, Haverford lists overlaps of course, but no one seems to list them as an overlap is what I meant.

@milgymfam : Yes, I understood your post. Just wanted to share that information about Haverford College.

P.S. Now I feel the need to thumb through the Fiske Guide to find schools which do list Haverford College as an overlap. But, the Ivies & other elite national universities do not.

Boston College 2018 official fact book. (As an aside, I find these incredibly useful for all schools. Prof compensation and make up. Prestigious awards. Majors. Applicants by state. Finances. Etc.)

@mountainsoul my D considered all three too, but was put off by Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore (for different reasons). She has found the belief in the honor code and its importance to be a common thread amongst her peers. She hasn’t run into any cheating or anything untoward as of yet.

@publisher. What does the quality of life index measure exactly?

I get the social and pen rating but this isn’t clear to me and I don’t have the guide handy.

Fiske Guide To Colleges 2020 edition:

Quality of Life: “This category grew out of the fact that schools with good academic credentials and plenty of social life may not, for one reason or another, be particularly wholesome places to spend four years.”

Examples offered:

If the academic pressure is cutthroat rather than constructive and the social system is manipulative of women, a college might get two stars for quality of life.

By contrast, a small college with modest academic programs and few social opportunities might have a strong sense of supportive community, have a beautiful campus, and be located near a wonderful city and, therefore, be rated four stars for quality of life.

As in the other categories, the reason can be found in the particular school write-up in the Fiske Guide To Colleges.

That sounds even more subjective than the pens. Perhaps a little skewed towards a particular belief system. Iron clad safety and facilities issues. Clubs etc. sure. but this seems to interpret a bit more nuanced without actually living there. Like most polls sometimes there are axes grinding in the background.

If you have the book, it is interesting to note the schools which have received four & five stars for quality of life.

Examples of 5 Star schools for Quality of Life are: Univ. of Vermont, Stanford University, Warren Wilson College, & the University of Virginia.

Examples of 4 Star schools for Quality of Life are: Amherst College, Connecticut College, Colorado College, Swarthmore, Univ. of Texas at Austin, Tufts University, Vassar College, Virginia Tech, Wash & Lee, WashUStL, Wellesley College, both Wheaton Colleges (Illinois & Massachusetts), Whitman College, Willamette Univ. (Salem, Oregon), Williams College, Harvard, Columbia & Vanderbilt University.

Do any catholic schools get 5 stars? Or Pepperdine smu or tcu etc.

Although not for everyone they may be perfect for those looking for this more conservative atmosphere. Although Georgetown and BC are actually really liberal politically.

The partying isn’t a focus so I’m ok with that part.

As an aside. My d22 is a young Dems ambassador at BC. It’s the largest student group by far and have attended the pro life speakers on campus to take all the seats and let them speak to a smaller group with no push back from faculty.

I believe that many schools are misrepresented by these things.

Cutthroat is in the eye of beholder and major usually. Not all.

But I’d like to know that in the narrative for sure.
