<p>Got to choose between those two, which do you think is better for a Comp Sci/English double major who wants to go to law school. I like small schools, with intense learning enviroment where I work to get my A’s. Also the enviroment is competive but not cut throat. Finally finances play a huge role cause they kept me from attending my first and second choices colleges.</p>
<p>So which do you think is better going to Oxford College of Emory as a Hopkins Scholar (8k a year) vs going to TCNJ with 5k scholarship and pending application to thier honors program?</p>
<p>I recommend TCNJ over Oxford of Emory. Yes, you get the great Emory degree down the road, but your first two years at Oxford are spent in a small rural town in a two year liberal arts college with very limited facilities and a very small student body. Go with the whole enchilada from the get-go with TCNJ.</p>
<p>I would highly suggest Oxford college, and then Emory College the last two years, Emory’s english program is absolutely excellent, and they have a very high admittance rate for students wanted to attend selective law schools. Furthermore, you are in Emory Univesitry, just not in Emory College. Also, Oxford College campus is beautiful, and you end up with an Emory University degree when you graduate. Lastly, Atlanta will be a great experience for you and may tend to inspire your writing as well.</p>
<p>Hi, I’ve seen your posts on the TCNJ thread, and know that you have been admitted to great colleges. I feel for you because my family is in the same position right now; my son was admitted to some fantastic “dream” schools which he will be unable to attend due to finances. He is weighing his decision re: TCNJ even now (also have not heard from the honors program yet.)
You probably attended addmitted student’s day recently (April 8?) How did you feel about the campus? the people? the environment? What did your gut say? I think that will give you your answer.</p>

<p>@Bomber not sure yet, I am going to visit Oxford tommorow and then compare the two. But before I compare the enviroments, I wanted to research each’s academic offerings.</p>
<p>What is the bottom line cost of attendance for you at each school? Are you instate for TCNJ?</p>
<p>There are quite a few very bright kids at TCNJ because of finances. I think a lot of posters here would be surprised at how competitive it can be. I’ve heard of many kids waitlisted there who were accepted at decent private colleges this spring. The one downside is that it doesn’t take you out of your comfort zone and expand your horizons if you’re from NJ.</p>
<p>@Bomber I think TCNJ is good school, academically its strong. I did go there and sit down and worked out what I wanted to study, its a doozy a double major in comp sci and english with a concentration in law and a minor in creative writing. Thier comp sci program is good, not great like URoch or Case’s, but slightly better than Emory’s I think. The only thing Emory has over TCNJ in Comp Sci is 4 year BS/MS. Both schools have a strong english department. Emory’s law school rate is 88% compared to TCNJ’s 66%, which the other sizable difference between the two. But the only quip I have about TCNJ is that its too close to home, in the sense that many of the kids from my school will be going there, and I already knew a few kids there. What I am afraid of is that I’ll back into my bad habits, procrastinating and slacking off, and that it’ll be like high school again, which why I wanted to go far to college where I know no one and can start fresh. From what I read, I like Oxford’s small intense enviroment, and their leadership development program. I’d like to be able to talk to my professors aside from class and have an intense discussion in small class of 15 students. The only thing stopping me is green, which sucks because it tosses out everything else you ever worked for.</p>
<p>EDIT: Oh yeah the campus at TCNJ is nice, a little mundane but nice none the less. But for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why it smelled like manure, lol.</p>
<p>@MomOFour I am instate for TCNJ. TCNJ costs ~20k and with my scholarship its like 15k. Oxford costs ~34k and with a scholarship is ~26k + 90k for the remaining years at Emory. Hopefully I can do well enough to be placed in thier Scholar’s program.</p>
<p>Insane_Membrane: funny, you don’t sound like a slacker to me!! But your point is well taken - you want to expand your horizons at the college level, not repeat or extend your high school experience.
Our impression of the school was that it was supportive and sweet, and I like your word, mundane. That was our second visit and we had the same impression the first time as well. And yes, the smell of freshly laid manure did not add to the esthetic experience.
I’m sorry, I’m not being very helpful in aiding you in your very important decision. My family and I are in the exact same position, green is what it is all about now, and my son will probably opt for Rutgers instead of TCNJ. Good luck to you in making your choice.</p>
<p>I myself was considering Oxford, but there was some things that turned me away. The social life there is, well, awful. Students from Oxford that then go onto Emory, tend to be very defensive of Oxford. The teaching quality is of Emory professors so there isn’t a problem there. My take on it, is that the academics are good, but it comes down to how much of a social life are you willing to sacrafice to attend Emory?</p>
<p>Well I visited, it was interesting. I have to disagree with the above poster, Oxford does have a social life. I had a blast while I was there, the students are really friendly and nice. Emory was another story, people there were arrogant and there was an elitist air there.</p>
<p>The only thing about oxford and emory was that their comp sci program is almost nonexistent, arr nothing ever works out.</p>
<p>Oh my God, I can’t believe you even asked this question. GO WITH OXFORD! Even though it’s a small college with a not-so-luxurious freshman life, after 2 years you’ll enter Emory University - a pretty prestigious university. My sister went there and she loved it. I mean, c’mon…it’s ATL.</p>
<p>Well got into TCNJ’s honor’s program. Oxford is looking more improbable, especially the one program I am intersted in happens to be thier weakest one.</p>
<p>BTW does anyone have any advice on negeotiating financial aid packages? I don’t know how to propose it.</p>
<p>Insane: Since you are familiar with the caliber of students at TCNJ how would you compare them with the kids at Emory? I know why you are interested in TCNJ, I’ve been researching it for the past year, ever since it came on my radar as a very good school and very affordable. I know some people who went there and loved it, and maybe more importantly, say they believe the quality of the education there was excellent. So if you like it, go for it, no matter what the “prestige” factor of the other school is like. </p>
